Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VINFIELD S. CHEDISTER, OF NEWVARK, NEW JERSEY.
PERMUTATlON-LOCK.
SPECIFIGA'IION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 555,474, dated February 25, 1896.
Applioation fi1ed August 16 1894.
T0 all wh0m zlt' may conaern:
Beit known that I, VINFIELD S. CHEDISTER, a citizen 0f the United Stabes, residing ab Newark, in the connty 0f Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and usefu1 Improvements in Permuteition Locks; zmd I do hereby deelare he following 130 be a full, c1ear, and exae descripion of the invention, such as Will enable ohers skilled in ehe art 130 which it appertains to make and nse the same.
I am familiar With permutation click-locks in which the nnlocking is accomplished by means 0f movennents regulaed in aecordanee With sound indications. One 0f the features 0f such locks is a cliek device for produeing the sound, 1ahe number 0f clieks corresponding 110 the partienlar combination 0r permutation for which a given 10ck is Set.
My present invention relates t0 such locks; zu1d i consists in the in1proved oonstruction ELI]C1 combination of parts substanoially as hereinafter described and elaimed. In a common form 0f 10011 0f this type as heretofore constructed it has been cnstomary t0 'have the tumbler connected With the holt 0f a spring-operated tumbler, by reason 0f which the said tumbler would be thrown when the right eombination had been found, 8,-I1d13116 fach would thus be 1nade known t0 any pers0n Wh0 was trying 130 piek 1311e 100k. In some eonstruetions 1she action 0f the spring-tumbler won1d even throw 0u1; 'the holt; 0r permit ict0 be thrown 0ut, thus making in eertain 0r possible for an accidental discovery. 0f the combination t0 cause the opening 0f uhe look.
In 1ny improvemenus (which I show in Conneetion with a padloek) I dispense With the spring-actuated tumbler, 0r, rather, I 00mbine the tumbler and the holt into one piece, the same not being actuated by a spring, but being withdravvn after the right combinaion has been fonnd by reason 01'? the fach that there is a beve1 upon ehe holt where i13 engages with the haspthat is t0 say, by virtue 0f the f0rm 0f bhe 100113 where it engages With the hasp the bitter can be pu1led out t0 remove rhe padlock, although neither the hasp n0r the holt is automatically thrown 0u. In this way theperson W110 is manipulaing the lock legitimately can dra'w the hasp ab the ratus.
proper time, but anybody e1se Will not be in Seriall1'o. 520,470. (N0 model.)
. forn 1ed 0f the open condition 0f the lock either by a clicking of the ti1n1bler when thrown by a spring 0r by the throwing 0f the holt and the release 0f the hasp.
I have illnstrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, in whieh Figure 1 is an elevation 0f the padlock wi1zh the front thereof removed, some of the mechanism being also taken away. Fig. 2 is an elevation 0f the parts removed in Fig. l, the saune being an interior view. Fig. 3 is an elevaoion and part section 0f the parcs appearing in Fig. 2 and of oher parts eonnected therewith. Fig. 4 shows eleVations 0f permunation-rings forming parts 0f my appa- Fig. 5 is a detail 0f my elick-wheel. Fig. 6 is a detail 0f the key which I employ in eonneetion Wih rny lock. Figs. 7 and 8 are detail views.
The same letters refer 130 the same parts throughont the description.
At A is shown the casing 0f my he hasp of which appears ab B.
At O is shown the holt of n1y padlock, that part 0f ifiwhich enters the foot 0f the hasp being beveled, as shown, so as to permit the padloek,
.boln o0 be forced back when the hasp is Withdrawn, provided there is 110 resistance elsewhere to the backward movem ent of the holt. The f0ot 0r 10wer end 0f Ehe hasp is provided Wit-h a slit c for receiving the end of the holt.
The holt is forn1ed in one pieee with the lock-tun1bler, and the lett er C may designate the whole pieee eonstitutinga eombined bolt and tnmb1er, the same being pivoned a1; d and provided Wih a Ing e, which forms a bit f0r entering the notches in the permntation-rings when they are brought t0 the proper position.
From he rear 0f the casing a shaft or rod D projects into the interior 0f the. loek, the said shafi: being surronnded by a hnb E and the said hub forming the bearing around Whi0h rings F F are adapted 130 be 'nrned. If preferred, the rings may rotate around the shaft and the part E may be a fixed eollar, between which and the back 0f the casing the rings are he1d from longitudinal movement along he shaft. This is, in fact, the C011- struction Whieh is illustrated in the drawings.
The rings F and F are the permunation rings of 1ny 10Ck, the onter ring, F, being provided With t-w0 pins np0n its oner snrface,
