SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,030, dated February 18, 1896.
Application filed July 17, 1895. Serial No. 556,290. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. WEsrBURe, of Urbana, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers or ater-Heaters and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement in steamboilers or water-heaters, being especially designed for use in house-warmin g, but also applicable to other useful purposes; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts in the heater, which will be fully explained in the following description and the annexed claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the boiler. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 is a central horizontal longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line 3 3, Fig. 1.
The water-chamber A of the boiler is a hollow thimble-shaped body B formed by two cylinders a I), placed one within the other, leaving a narrow annular space between them. The rear ends of the cylinders are closed by heads a b, the space between which communicates with the annular water-space, and the front ends of the cylinders are connected by an annulus A, which closes the front end of the annular water-chamber.
Around body 13 is a cylindrical casing 0, formed of sheet metal, lined with asbestos or other poor heat-conductin g material, but separated from the body by an annular flue-space c, which connects with an outlet-flue c, as shown. The casing projects beyond the open end of the body and is closed by a removable head D, fastened in place by means of bolts D projecting from the front end of body B, as shown. In head D are doors cl d, which respectively open into the fire-chamber E and ash-pit e of the boiler, both fire-chamber and ash-pit being Within the tubular body E. Direct communication of the fire-chamber and ash-pit with flue c is prevented by the plates F, attached to the front end of the body A and abutting against the head D, as indicated in the drawings.
The fire-chamber and ash-pit extend from head D nearly to the rear wall I) in body A, and are formed by two opposite metallic plates G, set vertically edgewise and connected at rear by a transverse plate H, which closes the rear end of ash-pit and forms the bridge-wall of the fire-chamber. Said plate has a ledge h, upon which the rear ends of the grate-bars I are supported, the front ends of said bars resting on a bracket-casting J secured to and between the front ends of plates G. (See Figs. 2 and 4E.)
The upper edges of plates G are shown as grooved to receive the edges of curved plates 9, which extend the length of the fire-chamher and form return-fines K, that extend from the rear bridge-wall G on each side of the firechamber and ash-pit to the front end of boiler, where they communicate with flue-space 0 through openings fin plate F.
hen used for hot-water heating systems, the water-chamber is connected through top pipes L with the radiators, and the returnwater enters at the bottom through pipes Z.
The fire-chamber, ash-pit and fiues K are entirely surrounded by the water-chamber, and the heated products of combustion are compelled to traverse the length of the inside of the water-chamber twice before escaping to the outside flue-space, where they pass over and around the exterior of the water-chamber. Thus the heat is applied directly to the outside and inside of the water-chamber, and there is very little loss of heat by radiation or convection, and the water being spread out in a thin annular sheet, but with ample circulating-space, is rapidly heated and thoroughlyprotects the water chamber Walls from injury by over-heating.
Having thus described my invention, What I therefore claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is
1. The combination of the thimble-shaped water-chamber body, the exterior casing and the flue-space between the body and casing; with the grate and ash-pit within the waterchamber body, and the return fines also within the water-chamber body and parallel with but on opposite sides of the ash-pit and each side of the fire-chamber and beside the ash-pit; with the exterior cylindrical jacket separated from the outer cylinder by an annular Iiuespace, communicating with the return-fines at the front end of the boiler, and the removable front plate, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. I11 a boiler, the combination of the thimble-shapcd double-Walled body 13 forming the WfLtQP-Cl1EUI1bGl, with the plates G, g, and II, dividing the interior of the body into ash-pit, fire-chamber, and return-flues beside the ash pit and partly below the grate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a boiler, the combination of the thimble-shaped double-Walled body 13 forming the water-chamber, with the plates G, g, and II, dividing the interior of the body into ash-pit, firechamber, and return-fines, all within the Water-chamber, with the exterior casing, the annular flue-space surrounding the body 13, and communicating at front with the returnilues, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. The herein-described boiler, consisting of the thi1nble-shaped Water-chamber formed of cylinders a, I), end plates to, I), and front plate B, the plates Gr, g, h and J forming the ash-pit, fire-chamber, bridge-wall, grate-support and return-lines inside the body B; combined With the exterior casing C separated from body 13 by an annular flue-space, and projecting beyond said body the removable head D having doors opening into the ash-pit and fire-chamber, and the plate F having openings f, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
