WATER-FILTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,954, dated February 18, 1896.
Application filed September 25, 1895. Serial No. 563,581. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB BETTER, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in VVater-Filters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved arrangement whereby when the faucet or discharge-valve of the filter is opened to draw water for use a valve located in the wastepipe of the filter is automatically opened, so that each time water is drawn for use a communication is opened up between the filter and the waste-pipe, resulting in filtered water being forced back through the filtering medium and the waste-pipe to clean the filtering medium.
My invention consists in features of 110velty hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a View, part in elevation and part in section, illustrating my invention. Fig. II is a detail section showing a' modification.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a clear-water or storage tank.
2 represents the supply-pipe from the main, 3 the waste-pipe, and 4 the filtering-stone located inside of the tank 1, and with the bottom 5 of which the supply-pipe 2 connects through a branch 6 and coupling 7. The pipe 3 also connects with the coupling 7, and I prefer to place a direct pipe connection 8 between the filtering-stone and the pipe 3, as shown in Fig. I, one end of the pipe 8 connecting with the coupling 7. 9 represents a valve located in the pipe 8. By opening this valve a direct communication is made between the filtering-stone and the pipe 3.
10 represents a disk or partition in the pipe 2, having a small opening for reducing the volume of water that passes through the pipe 2 within a given time.
In the pipe 3 is a valve 11 having a lever 12. 13 represents the faucet of the tank 1 through which water is drawn for use. The valt e of this faucet has a lever 14 connected to the lever 12 of the valve 11 by means of a link 15. Each time the faucet 13 is opened to draw water from the tank the valve 11 will be automatically opened through means of the described connection and the pressure within the tank 1 will force filtered water back through the stone and through the pipe 3, thus causing the stone to be cleaned each time water is drawn from the tank. The closing of the faucet closes the valve 11 and shuts off the passage of water through the pipe 3.
In Fig. II is shown a single valve that performs the functions of the valves 11 and 13. I have shown this valve 16 as forming part of the faucet, and it is formed with two ways, with one of which the faucet-port communicates and with the other of which the pipe 3 communicates, so that when the valve is moved in one direction both the faucet and the pipe 3 will be opened and when the valve is moved in the other direction both will be closed.
The term faucet, as used in this specification, is meant to designate a pipe, long or short, provided with a valve through which clear water is drawn from the tank for use.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a water-filter, the combination of a storage-tank, a supply-pipe, a filtering medium, a drain-pipe, a valve in the drain-pipe, a faucet for drawing water from the storagetank, and a connection between said faucet and the valve in the drain-pipe, whereby a communication is open ed up between the storage-tank and the drain-pipe through the filtering medium each time the faucet is opened, substantially as set forth.
2. In a water-filter, the combination of a tank containing a filtering medium and having a discharge-pipe, a drain-pipe, and a valve device for simultaneously opening said discharge and drain pipes, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
