FRED C. MORRISON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED LAUNDRY-REGISTER AND MATCH-SAFE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 554,712, dated February 18, 1896. Application filed April 19, 1895. $erial No. 546,367. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED O. MORRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pocket Laundry-Registers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to pocket-registers.
The object of my invention is to provide a pocket laundry-register of a simple, compact, and neat construction capable of being made at small cost from sheet metal by punches and dies, and by use of which persons can conveniently keep a full and reliable record of the articles which they send weekly to public laundries, thereby detecting any mistake or shortage that may exist when the articles are returned.
A further object of my improvement is to so construct the device that it may be made a part of or combined with any suitable obj ect customarily carried in the pocket-such, for example, as a match-safe,a toothpick-case, a stampcase, a pocket-book, or other like article.
My invention consists, in connection with apair of inclosing plates, of a series of toothed counter-wheels furnished with numerals on their face and journaled upon one of the plates, a toothed holding-bar adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with the teeth of the counter-wheels to hold the wheels normally in position, and a reciprocating locking-bar for locking the toothed holding-bar in engagement with the counter-wheels, the locking-bar and the toothed holding-bar being between the inclosing plates and held in position thereby.
It further consists, in connection with the inclosing plates, of the counter-wheels arranged in two rows and a pair of toothed holding-bars, one adapted to engage the wheels of one row and the other the wheels of the other row, and a single or common locking-bar havin g two sets of cams for engaging the cams of the holding-bars, the locking-bar being between the two holding-bars.
It further consists in the novel construction of parts and devices, and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described, and specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front side elevation of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on line 44 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a section on line 6 6 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a section on line 7 7 of Fig. 3. The arrows indicate the directions in which the several sectional views look. Fig. 8 is a bottom view. Fig. 9 is a detail perspective view of the reciprocating locking bar or slide, the same showing aslight spring or curvature given to this slide, so that the tension of the spring will cause sufficient friction of the slide against the inclosing plates to cause the slide to remain in whatever position it may be placed. Fig. 10 is an enlarged view similar to Fig. (3, with the match-safe spring omitted. Fig. 11 is a detail perspective of the plate to which the wheels are pivoted, and Fig. 12 shows a modification in which the match-safe is omitted.
In the drawings the same parts are indicated by the same letters of reference in all the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A and B represent the inclosing plates, 0 an end plate between the inclosing plates, and D the counterwheels arranged in two rows D D between the inclosing plates A and B and journaled to one of said plates, B, by suitable pivots d, preferably made integral with the wheels D by stamping a hub or boss or projection thereon. The counter-Wheels D are each furnished with suitable teeth d, which engage corresponding teeth f on the movable holding-bars F F. The holding-bars F F are furnished with cam projections f f, which engage corresponding cam projections g g on the reciprocating locking-bar G. The locking-bar G has a lip g turned up at its end and projecting through a slot at in the inclosing plate A to serve as a thumb-piece formoving the locking-bar and also as a guide for the same, and the locking-bar G has a similar lip g at its other end fitting in a slot 1) in the plate B to serve as a guide for this end of the sliding locking-bar. The plate B, to which the counter-wheels D are pivoted by their hubs d fitting in the holes 19 is furnished with a marginal flange b at one end, against which the holding-bars F F abut at one end, and the end plate 0 serves as an abutment at the other end of the holding-bars F F to keep them in place longitudinally. The plate Bis also preferably provided with flanges B 13 at its side edges fitting in and forming part of the match-safe case A, which is made intogral with the plate A. The plate A is provided with are-shaped recesses or openings a, one for each counter-wheel D, to give ready access thereto, and thus enable each wheel to be turned by the finger or nail when desired. The plate A is further furnished with a series of index or indicator openings (t one for each counter-wheel, registering with the circle (P, in which the numerals d are arranged on each of the counter-wheels.
In applying my invention to a matclrsafe, as illustrated in the drawings at Figs. 1 to 11, I preferably make the inclosing plate A integral with the outer shell A of the match-safe, the same being drawn up, as usual, out of one piece of sheet metal, and the end plate 0 interposed between the inclosing plates A B is made integral with the band 0, usually placed at the mouth of the metal match-safe shell to form a guide or stop for the hinged cover ll of the match safe or case. The cover II is hinged at 7b to the shell A and isautoinatieally opened by a U -shaped spring K fitting inside the matclrreceptacle A having a bent end or lip 7i; fitting against the cover H just above its spring 7b. The opposite end 7t" of the spring engages a catch it on the cover, so that the same spring serves also to hold the cover closed, the end of the spring being furnished with a recess or catch engaging the corresponding catch h on the cover II. To release the catch which holds the cover closed, the spring is furnished with a button 7d projecting through a hole a in the case A.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 12 the match-safe is omitted, and the plate A is furnished with a marginal flange a at its sides and ends to better inelose the wheels D and keep the plates slightly farther apart than the thickness of the counter-wheels, so that they may be readily turned. The dotted lines in this figureindicateprojections a, with which the plate A may be provided for securing the same to a pocket-book or other article.
Small springsj" may be placed between the wheels I) and the toothed holding-bars I to throw the holding-bars out of engagement with the wheels 1) when the locking-bar G is withdrawn; but ordinarily these springs will not be necessary, as the wedging or cam action of the teeth on the wheel and on the locking-bar will cause the locking-bar to readily move out of the way when attempt is made to turn one of the wheels 1) after unlocking the slide G.
The locking-bar is slightly curved, so that its spring action will serve to hold it normally in place and prevent accidental unlocking of the same.
The plates A B are secured together by rivets a.
