SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,309, dated February 11, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:
- 3e it known that I, FRANZ CH. REINHARDT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Paterson, county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Braiding-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a circularbraiding machine provided with my improvement, only those parts of the machine being shown which are necessary to fully illustrate the nature of my said invention. In said drawings,a represents the circular frame of a braiding-machine, on which the spools and bobbins and their operating mech anism are arranged in the usual well-known manner. Traversing the circular frame and secured thereto by means of nuts and bolts 17, or in any desired manner, is the bar or bridge I), to the center of which is secured the upwardlyextending stationary shaft or rod 0. On the upper portion of said rod is arranged a tube f, having its top rounded off, as at g, and is secured to said rod by means of the set-screw f. The upper portion of said tube forms a chamber for the reception of the block 9, penetrated in its center by a the same.

On the shaft 0 and below the tube f is secured by means of the set-screw e a sleeve (Z, having a horizontally-proj ecting plate d, pro:
vided with a series of. openings d through square sleeve h, their hairy projections are laid flat on the fiber, and as soon as they leave the said sleeve they are, together with the top portion 71, of the blade it, covered up by the covering-threads O, and are thus prevented from penetrating the said covering. The braid is moved or slid upward on the said top portion It and leaves the latter as soon as it has passed through the slot 17', when the coveringthreads 0 on account of their elasticity will firmly bind on the fillers, as will be manifest.
From the foregoing it can be seen that the cheap hairy fiber can be used forthe manufacture of smooth braids, and also that the number of fibers (as fillers) is immaterial. If
more than three fibers are used, the layer it is removed and replaced by one having a sleeve of a width equal to the combined diameters of the said fibers.
I do not intend to limit myself to the precise construction shown and described, as various alterations can be made without chan ging the scope of my invention; but
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a braiding-machine, the combination with the frame, of avertically-arranged shaft on said frame, a plate projecting horizontally from said shaft and provided with a series of holes or openings, a tube adjustably secured to said shaft, and a rectangular sleeve carried by said tube, and removably secured thereto, all said parts adapted to operate substantially as and for the purposes described:

In a braiding-machine, the combination with the frame, of a vertically-arranged shaft on said frame, a guide-plate projecting horizontally from said shaft and adjustably secured thereto, a tube adjustably secured to said shaft and above said guide-plate, an upwardly-projecting blade supported by said tube, and a rectangular sleeve on said blade, all said parts adapted to operate substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. In a braiding-machine, the combination with the frame, of a vertically-arranged shaft on said frame, a guide-plate projecting horizontally from said shaft, a tube on said shaft, a block adj ustably arranged in said tube, and
justably secured to the frame for the reception of the upper free end of said blade, all said parts adapted to operate substantially as and for the purposes described.
5. In abraiding-machine, the combination with the frame, of a vertically-arranged shaft on said frame, a guide-plate adjustably se cured on said shaft, a tube on said shaft and above the guide-plate and having its upper end rounded off, a spring-block adj ustably secured in said tube, a blade supported by said block, a rectangular sleeve on said blade and a slotted arm adj ustably secured to the frame for the reception of the upper free end of the blade, all said parts adapted to operate, substantially as and for the purposes described.
