AXLE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,186, dated February 4, 1896.
Application filed September 5, 1895. Serial No. 561,494. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. HYLE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Redwood, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Axle-Boxes and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention consists in providing an axle-box with spiral flanges having knifeedges, two sets of flanges being provided so that they will engage different parts of the hub.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views on the lines 2 2 and 3 3 of Fig. 1.
A designates the axle-box, the general configuration of which is of the ordinary type.
My invention consists in applying to the forward part a of the axle-box A a series of curved or spiral flanges B, which are provided with knife-edges, and in applying to the rear end a of the axle-box aseries of curved flanges O, which are positioned so as to be out of line with the flanges B.
In manufacturing my improved axle-box the flanges B and O are formed integral with the box, and the flanges B commence at a point a short distance from the forward end of the axle-box and terminate at the shoulder a WVhile the flanges O are located at an equal distance apart as the flanges B, they are out of line with the latter. Both sets of flanges are provided with knife-edges and the forward ends are sharpened, as shown.
An axle-box constructed as hereinbefore described may be driven into the hub without the use of any special tools, and when driven into position will be held securely against rotation in the hub. When the axle-box is being driven into the hub, the curved flanges will cause the same to turn. Should the spindle at any time become jammed in the axlebox, the tendency of the tightening will be to draw said axle-box farther into the hub,which will be resisted by the shoulders. By commencing the flanges a short distance from the forward end of the axle-box said forward end serves as a guide for inserting the box into the hub. The knife-edges of the flanges will cut their way into the wooden hub when the axle-box is being driven therein, and will also out through any knots that may be in the huh.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide an axle-box or bushing with continuous flanges or screwthreads; but the pitch of the threads is such that it requires a special tool to insert the box into the hub. I am also aware that it is not new to provide the inner portion of the hub with straight flanges. not claim such construction as my invention; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. An axle-box or bushing for hubs having a reduced forward portion provided with longitudinally-curved flanges B, and an enlarged rear portion with longitudinally inclined flanges O, the flanges B and C having sharpened front edges and being positioned out of line with each other, substantially as shown.
2. An axle-box or bushing for hubs having a plurality of longitudinally-curved flanges B with knife-edges and sharpened forward ends, said flanges extending from a point near the front end of the axle-box to the shoulder thereof, and flanges O on the enlarged rear portion of the axle-box having knife-edges and sharpened forward ends, the flanges 0 being inclined with respect to the longitudinal center of the axle-box and positioned on a line between the rear ends of the flanges B substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
