To all whom, it may cancer/1,:
Be it known that 1, Moon WEINTRAUB, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful 1mprovement in Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in lamps, and especially to an improvement in alcohol-lamps, and the object of the invention is to provide a diaphragmatic cap or cover, through the medium of which the volume of the flame may be increased or diminished, or whereby the flame may be extinguished, the said diaphragmatic cap being operated from the exterior of the lamp and, if desired, at some distance therefrom.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved lamp. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken about centrally through the lamp. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the cover of the lamp-body containing the diaphragm. Fig. 4 is a partial plan view and a partial horizontal section of the said lamp-cover, illustrating one of the members of the diaphragm in plan View. Fig. 5 is a plan View of a member of the diaphragm, and Fig. 6 is an edge view of the same.
The body of the lamp A is given any desired shape, that shown in the drawings being circular or substantially so, and in the bottom of this body-casing a receptacle B is contained, and in this receptacle a conical reservoir 10 is secured, the upper end whereof extends above the top of the receptacle, as shown in Fig. 2, and the bottom or base portion of the conical reservoir is provided with series .of apertures 11, while the upper end of the made for the admission of air, leading into this space, as shown in Fig. 2, while near the upper portion of the body-casing an annular partition 14 is formed, extending from the casing to the upper portion of the receptacle B, and this partition has apertures 15 made therein to conduct upward the air introduced through the lower apertures 13. A bed 16, of asbestos or other like material, is packed around the lower portion of the reservoir 10, and this bed usually extends within the receptacle to about a level with the annular partition 11, being covered at the top by an apertured plate 17, and above this plate the receptacle is provided with an upwardly-extending flange 18, containing openings 19.
The body of the receptacle is provided with a prefera bly-re movable cover C,and this cover has an opening made in the top, the wall whereof is usually tapered, and'is substantially of the size and also the shape of the apertured cover-plate of the asbestos bed, and the cap of the reservoir 10 extends upward within the central portion of this opening. A ring 21 is held to turn within the cover Q, being held in horizontal position by means of pins 2 1 or their equivalents, as shown in Fig. 3. In the bottom face of the ring radial slots 22 are produced, and the ring is adapted to carry in a measure a number of thin metal segmental plates 23, and these plates are so grouped that they lie one on the other, forming a circular space at the center of the group. Each ofthese plates is provided with two lugs or studs, one stud, 24, being at one end and extending upward, while the second stud, 25, is at the op-- posite end and extends downward. The studs 24 serve to pivot the plates to the cover 0, while the studs 25 extend downward, one in each of the-radial slots of the ring. In fact, the grouping of these plates and their arrangement relative to the ring and to the cover are such as to form an iris-diaphragm, and the movement of the plates of the diaphragm is accomplished, preferably, by producing a segmental rack 26 on the under face of the ring 21 and engaging said rack with a pinion n7, mounted on a spindle 28, extending outward through and beyond a side of the cover, the said shaft or spindle having a hand-wheel 29 or its equivalent 011 its outer end. It will thus be observed, in operation,
that by turning thering 21 in. one direction the plates of the diaphragm will each move an equal distance in a radial direction from the center of the circle on which they are arranged, leaving a circular opening D over the cover-plate of the asbestos bed, of a diameter equal to or less than that of the opening in the cover, and that by turning the ring in an opposite direction the diaphragm members will move readily toward the center, covering the bed-plate 19 to a greater or less extent; or the said diaphragm may be made to close tightly on the cap 12 of the reservoir, thus extinguishing the fiame of the lamp; and it is further evident that by means of the aforesaid diaphragm the volume of the flame may be increased or diminished and rendered compact with little exertion on the part of the operator.
It is obvious that the alcohol is to be contained in the reservoir 10, and that it will pass out through the openings 11 into the asbestos bed, burning at the openings in the cover-plate of the latter.
Air is supplied to the flame through the openings 13 and 15 in the casing and the openings 19 in the flange of the receptacle, air being also admitted through openings made in the sides of the cover, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a lamp-burner, of a device for regulating the combustion-surface thereof, comprising a series of pivoted plates arranged to form a centrally-apertu red diaphragm over the combustion-surface, the said aperture being at all times concentric with the axis of the burner, and mechanism for adjusting the size of the opening, substantially as specified.
2. A regulator for the combustion-s11rface of a lamp, comprising an apertured cover adapted to engage the body of the lamp and extended above the combustion-surface, a ring adapted to rotate in said cover, a series of segmental plates having pivotal connection with the cover and having sliding connection with the ring and mechanism for 1'0- tating said ring, for swinging the plates on their pivots, for adjusting the diameter of the opening over the combustion-surface, the said opening being at all times concentric with the center of the combustion-surfacc, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with a lamp having a substantially horizontal combustion-surface, of a ring-shaped cover therefor and means for regulating the opening thereof, comprising a series of segmental plates having pivotal connection at one end with the cover, a ring supported in the cover and having radial slots into which projections from the plates extend, a rack formed on said ring, and a pinion engaging with the rack and having an outwardly-extending shaft, substantially as specified.
