SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,640, dated January 28, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN A. BOWEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVashington ,in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbeige-Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a f ull,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to garbage-receptacles, and has for its object to produce a device wherein the receptacle for the garbage may be conveniently held upon a pivoted panel in a fence or buildingso that when said panel is closed the receptacle will hang on the inside of said fence or building and when the panel is opened the receptacle will be swung into a position on the outside of the fence or building.

To the ac'complisment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly described and then sought to be specifically defined by the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of the invention as applied in use; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same, the opened position of the panel being shown in dotted lines.

In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a fence or the exposed portion of any suitable building or partition, and 2 a pivoted or swinging panel or door formed to occupy a space out from said fence so as to close and protect the same. This panel is pivoted by any suitable means-for instance, by the bar 3 secured thereto by screws and to the fence by keepers 4S0 as to be pivoted in said keepers. At the lower edge of said panel I provide a strip or bead 5 to limit the outward movement of the lower portion of the panel when the same is being closed. At the top of the panel a similar strip 6 is secured for a like purpose. To one face of the panel and at right angles thereto are affixed the supports or brackets 7 which are secured by screws or other suitable means, and are provided with the bearings 8. receptacle 9 is pivoted by means of the pivoting pintles or projections 10 which extend from each side of the receptacle, so that the receptacle is always free to swing into an upright position during the swinging movement of the pivoted panel, and thus the spilling of liquid from the receptacle during its movement is prevented.

By the use of this invention the garbage may be readily collected by the collector, who has only to swing the pivoted panel outward by means of the handle thereon,and duringits movement the receptacle is constantly maintained in an upright position, so that there is no danger of spilling either the garbage or any liquid which may be in the receptacle. When the receptacle is in its outward position it may be readily swung upon its pivot to dump its contents into the receptacle carried by the collector.

The panel is provided with a suitable handle 11, and a lock and key 12 may be provided if it is desired to secure the panel in its closed position to prevent tampering therewith. 7 5 The receptacle may be of any suitable nature and is preferably provided with a pivoted cover, as shown. IVhen the panel is in its open position the opening in the fence is practically closed so as to prevent the entrance 8:) therethrough of any person.

I have illustrated and described in detail the preferred construction of this invention; but many alterations and changes may be made in the construction of parts without de- 8 5 parting from the spirit of the invention.

Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a garbage receptacle, the combina- 0 tion with a pivoted panel adapted to form a closure, of a support for a receptacle extending at an angle from said panel, and a receptacle 'pivotally mounted on said support, substantially as described. 9 5

2. In a garbage receptacle, the combination with a pivoted panel adapted to form a closure, of a support extending at an angle from one side of said panel, and a receptacle pivoted in said support, substantially as de- I00 scribed.

3'. In a garbage receptacle, the combinarod or bar pivotally supporting said panel, a stop to limit the movement of the swinging panel, the brackets secured to said panel at right angles thereto and provided with bearings, and the receptacle pivotally mounted on said brackets, substantially as described.
