BLANK-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 553,493, dated January 21, 1896.
Original application filed March 26, 1895, Serial No. 543,275. Divided and this application led October l2, 1895. Serial No. 565,465. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK MATrUsoH, of Muscatine, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blank-Cutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this speciiication.
This invention is an'improved machine for cutting blanks for buttons, dac., from shells, bone, che.; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described.
This application for patent is a division of my application for patent on button-making machine, filed March 26, 1895, Serial No. 543,275, and the devices for trimming, polishing, and eyeleting the buttons are disclosed in said application and need no description herein. I do not, however, limit the present invention to its employment in connection with said machines.
The best form of the blank-cutter known to me is illustrated in the accompanying` drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the blankcutter; Fig. 2, a vertical section through the same on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail.
Referring to the drawings, the device for cutting blanks from shells, Ato., comprises an upright standard A having three lateral arms o a a2, the lowest forming the base by which the standard is secured on the supportingstand Z, while the two upper arms contain bearings for and guide a vertical shaft B, which can be lowered by means of a lever B/ bearing on top of the shaft and connected by a rod B2 with a treadle B3 below the table. The shaft is raised by a coiled springb interposed between bracket a and a collar b' on the shaft, as shown. On said shaft is a loose' pulley C and fast pulley c, driven by a belt, (not shown,) which runs on pulley C when the shaft is raised and when the shaft is lowered is shifted onto pulley c by the shifter C', so that the shaft is rotated when it descends.
On the lower end of shaft B is a yoke E having a bottom cone E and a hollow screwthreaded shank E2 below the cone. The cone iits in the bottom of a hollow casting F provided at one side with pairs of lugs F embracing a guide-plate A2 fastened to standard A, so that while the casting can move up and down it cannot rotate. The shank E2 passes through an opening in the bottom of the casting, and the cutter-holder e3 is screwed thereon, thereby securing the casting to the shaft also. The cutter e is a hollow tube having serrations on its lower edge, and is adapted to cut round blanks from a shell, dto., laid on block A3 below the shaft, and as the blanks are cut successively each succeeding blan-k forces the preceding blanks farther up in the tube until they escape into casting F over the cone E', down which they slide to the sides of the casting, and wings E3 on the cone catch the blanks and carry them to the dischargespout F2 at the side of the casting through which they pass into a receiver. The blanks are then removed, and subsequently iinished by other machinery or by hand.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. In a blank cutter, the combination of the longitudinally movable rotatable shaft 5 the yoke and tubular cone attached thereto, and the hollow cutter attached to the cone in line with the opening therein, substantially as described.
2. In a blank cutter, the combination of the longitudinally movable rotatable shaft; the yoke and tubular cone attached thereto, and the hollow cutter attached to the cone in alignment with the opening therein; with means for rotating and reciprocating said shaft at the will of the operator, substantially as described. y
3. The herein described blank cutter, consisting of the longitudinally movable rotatable shaft, the yoke and tubular cone attached thereto, the hollow cutter attached to the cone in line with the opening therein, and the non-rotatable hollow casting surrounding the cone, and means for rotating and reciprocating said shaft at will of the operator, substantially as described.
4. The combination in a blank cutter, of a rotatable yoke, a tubular cone attached to the IOO io rying the yoke, and the fixed hollow Casting surrounding the yoke and cone, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
