Be it known that I, CHARLES XV. BACON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burke, in the county of Dane and State of \Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Tobacco-Press, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in devices for compressing tobacco into compact form and adapting the same to be tied or put up in packages ready to be placed upon the market.

The object of the present invention is to simplify and improve devices of the character referred to and to provide a portable tobaccobaling press which shall be simple and strong in construction and durable and efficient in practice.

One of the principal objects of this invention is to provide convenient means for an shipping and displacing the m in supportingbeam during the operation of filling the press.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the subjoined description.

The invention consists in certain. novel features and details of construction and arrange ment of parts, as hereinafter particularly pointed out, illustrated in the drawings, and finally embodied in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an improved balingpress constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical lon gitudinalfsection through the same. Fig. 3 is a detail section through one end of the main supportingbcam. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the sliding locking-plate.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a suitable platform or base of wood, to the underside of which are secured two or more transverse strengtheningcleats and supports 2. This platform or base also forms the bottom of the baling-press, and has secured to the lower face thereof a stout metal strap 3, the length of which is greater than the width of the base or platform, adapting the ends thereof to be turned upwardly and perforated to form ears 4 for the attachment of draft-rods. (Indicated at 5.)

The box 0, in which the tobacco is placed. and compressed, is made preferably in the open rectangular form shown and left open at top and bottom to permit the ready insertion and removal of the tobacco. The corners of this box are strengthened by means of angle-irons or stout corner plates 7, screwed or otherwise secured thereto and extending from top to bottom. Resting upon the upper edges of the longitudinal side boards of the box 6 are extension-boards 8, provided with suitable retaining-plates 9, secured to opposite sides thereof, said plates extending below the lower edges of said extension-board and embracing the side boards of the baling-box upon opposite sides, whereby the boards 8 are retained in proper position and yet adapted to be readily removed when desired.

These draftrods (indicated at 5) are looped at their lower ends through the ears a on the base or platform and are received at their upper ends by the beam 10, the rod 5, at one side, being passed through a vertical perforation in said beam and having retaining-nuts 12 applied to it above and beneath said beam, and the other rodbeing received within an open slot 13 in the opposite end of said beam, and having a retaining-nut l2 resting upon the upper side or face plate of said beam, as shown.

The rod 5 is adapted to be retained and locked within said open slot 13 by means of a slotted plate 14, which is arranged to slide transversely of said beam and across said open slot within notches or depressions 15 in the beam 10 upon opposite sides of said slots. At one end the sliding plate It is provided with a depending lip 16, forming a handle by which the same may be manipulated, and the escape of said plate is prevented by means of a screw 17, which passes downwardly through a perforation in the face-plate 11, through the slot in said sliding plate and into the beam. proper. By this construction it will be apparent that when the sliding plate ii is moved inward so as to lie across the slot 13 the escape of the draft-rod 5 will be prevented.

By withdrawing the sliding plate 14: and removing the draft-rod from the slotted end of the beam 10 said beam, together with the compressing-lever, may be lifted or unshipped and thrown to one side of the machine during the operation of filling the press with tobacco or removing a bundle therefrom.

18 designates the baling lever,.which is formed with a rounded or cam face and faced with a metal wear-plate 19, as shown, for operating upon the upper side of a verticallymovable head or top board 20, said headboard being provided with a friction or wear plate 21, secured thereto and provided with side flanges, which serve as guides for the com pressing-lever 18. The lever 18 is provided adjacent to its cam-face with a hinge-plate 22, by means of which it is pivotally connected to a clip or plat 23, secured to the beam 10.

I11 operation the press is filled with tobacco up to the top edges of the side extensionboards 8 and the top or head board 20 placed thereon, after which the beam 10 is brought over the top of the press and the draft-rod 5 on the opposite side of the press engaged with the slotted end of said beam and locked thereto by means of the sliding plate, as previously described. The lever 18 is now vibrated in such manner as to force the head-board down- .ward and compress the tobacco within the open rectangular box or case 0. This pressure is applied for a few minutes until the tobacco is sufficiently compressed to retain its form, when the beam 10 is unshipped and thrown to one side, thus permitting the tobacco to be removed in a compressed mass from the press and bound or packed in suitable bundles ready for the market.

The press described is very simple in construction and at the same time very strong and durable in practice and efficient in operation. The press is also verylight in weight and may be carried from place to place and used for pressing other materials, as well as tobacco.

It will be apparent that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is

1. In a tobacco press, the combination with the base or platform thereof, of a metal strap secured to the lower face thereof and provided with upturned perforated ends disposed at the sides of said base or platform, a rectangular baling box superposed thereon and left open at top andbottom, a transverse beam arranged over and extending across the longitudinal side boards of said baling box, a cam-faced baling lever hinged to said beam, and an oppositely disposed pair of draft rods pivotally connected at their lower ends with said metal strap on the base or platform, the upper end of one of said rods being passed through a perforation in the beam an d adj ustably clamped therein, and the upper end of the other red being received in an open slot in the end of said beam and retained therein by means substantially as specified.

2. In a tobacco press, a base or platform provided with a metal strap having perforated ends disposed on opposite sides thereof, in combination with a separable baling box arranged upon said base or platform, a beam extending transversely over said baling box, a cam-faced balin g lever hinged to said beam, an oppositely disposed pair of draft rods in terposed between the perforated ends of the strap secured to the base or platform and said beam, one of said rods being received in an open slot in one end of said beam, and a slotted lockin g plate movable transversely of said beam and across the open slot therein, sub stantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.

3. In a baling press, a rectangular base or platform and a metallic strap secured thereto and provided with upwardlyprojecting perforated ends, in combination with a separate baling box mounted upon said base or plat form, a beam extending transversely across and above said box, means connected with said beam for compressing the tobacco, an oppositely disposed pair of draft rods having a hinged connection with the base or platform and passing at their upper ends through said transverse beam, and the retaining and adjusting nuts carried by said rods and operating to clamp said transverse beam and adjust the height thereof and uphold the same, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
