SIRUP-FOUN TAIN COCK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,632, dated January '7, 1896.

Beit known that LOHARLEs H. DUFFIELD,

a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in sirup-Fountain Cocks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to means for manually establishing a connection and also a disconnection with the cock of the sirupjar of a soda-water apparatus to permit of discharge of the sirup from said jar and for cutting off the discharge of the sirup therefrom, and also to permit of the removal of the jar without disturbing the actuating means for said cock, and it relates to the particular construction and arrangement of such a means for the said purposes.

The principal object of my invention is to provide asirup-jar having arotary discharge cock valve with a key or plug, an operatinghandle provided with a spindle having a key way and a pin, said spindle slidable through a sleeve notched or slotted in one portion to permit in the sliding movement of said spindle of the pin to be guided in said slot and the sleeve provided with stops or lugs formed integral with the rear flanged face of the sleeve adapted to be secured to the case or housing of the fountain from the inside thereof and partially threaded to receive a Washer and nut to fit snugly against the outside of the case or housing so as to hold the same in required position and an inclosing-cap for the sleeve, the construction being such that the valve-cock of the jar is manually turned and the keyway of the operating-handle manually disengaged from the key or plug of the valve-cock by sliding the spindle through the sleeve fixed to said case or housing, the extent of outward sliding movement through the sleeve being limited by the stop-pin in the slot of the sleeve, whereby withdrawal of the jar is permitted from the interior of the case or housing for refilling or otherwise, and engagement of the keyway with the valve cock or plug by an inward-sliding movement of the spindle of the operatinghandle is effected and the range of the rotary movement limited by the stops or lugs of said sleeve in the case or housing of the apparatus.

My invention, stated in general terms, consists of a sirup-fountain jar provided with a from the following description, taken in con nection with the accompanying drawings,

forming part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the chamber of a soda-water apparatus, showing the sirup-jar in position therein and with its discharge-cock and means for operating the same, embodying features of my invention.

Fig. 2 is an elevational view of a sirup-jar discharge-cock and its actuating means of my invention manually manipulated. Fig. 3 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section showing the operating-handle and the manner of attaching and detaching the same to and from the key or plug of the sirup-jar discharge-cock illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2; and Fig. 4 is a view in front elevation of the apertured chair with its inclined walls and in cross-section the base-plate thereof fitted to the bottom of the case or housing of the apparatus.

Referring to the drawings, A is a case or housing of the apparatus of any suitable construction. The case or housing is provided with an internally-supported ice-receptacle a and a sirup-jar a of respectively suitable constructions.

B is a discharge-cock secured in the jar a, and provided with a rotary valve 1), with a key or plug 11 and with a projecting nozzle b detachably fitting a socketed chair or support I) with two outwardly-inclined walls Z9 so as to maintain the jar a firmly to position in the internal chamber A of the'case A, and with an opening in the base of the chair I) to permit of the discharge of the sirup from the jar a through said nozzle into a glass or other receptacle 19 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

0 is an operating-handle provided with a shoulder c at the front portion of the same, and which merges into a spindle enlarged at the rear portion 0 and terminating in a slotted keyway 0 The enlarged portion of the spindle is provided with a pin adapted to enter an oblong slot d in a flanged and shouldered and partially threaded sleeve D. The forward exterior surface of the sleeve D is threaded at CZ and the rearward portion is shouldered and flanged at d and d. In a word, the construction is such as to enter the case or housing A from the inside through an opening A adapted to receive said flanged and shouldered sleeve D, and which latter is secured into the ease or housing A by means of a Washer c and nut 6, applied to the threaded portion of the sleeve'from the outside of the case or housing A.

E is a cap secured onto the threaded portion of the secured sleeve to conceal said washer and nut and also to give an ornamental or finished appearance to the operating means for the sirup-jar discharge-cockB.

Formed preferably integral with the flan ged rear face of the sleeve D are two lugs or stops, (1 and d for limiting the range of manual rotary movement of the spindle of the operating-handle by means of the pin C thereof, and while the slotted keyway is in engagement with the plug or key of the sirupjar discharge-cock B.

It will be observed that the sliding movement of the spindle of the operating-handle is a manual action in both directions-that is, either to turn the valve to permit of a discharge through the nozzle Z) of sirup from the jar a or the withdrawal of the slotted keyway of said spindle from the valve to permit of the removal of the jar for refilling, cleaning of the same, or otherwise, and, moreover, that the parts of the operating means for said cock B are separable, and thus can be readily taken apart and assembled.

Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a soda fountain apparatus, the com bination with a sirup jar inclosed in a case and provided with a rotary discharge nozzle cock having a key or plug, of an operating handle provided with a spindle having a keyway and a pin, said spindle slidable through and snugly fitted to a sleeve flanged and slotted in one portion to permit in the sliding movement of said spindle of the pin to be guided in said slot and the sleeve provided with stops or lugs formed integral with the rear flanged face of the sleeve adapted to be secured to the case from the inside thereof and partially threaded to receive a washer and nut to fit snugly against the outside of the case so as to hold the same in required position and an inclosing cap for the sleeve, the construction being such that said valve cock is manually turned and the key-way of said operatinghandle is manually disengaged from the key or plug of said valve-cock by sliding said spindle through the sleeve fixed to said case, the extent of outward sliding movement through said sleeve being limited by the stoppin in the slot of the sleeve, whereby withdrawal of the jar is permitted from the interior of the case for refilling and engagement of the key-way with said valve-cock or plug by an inward sliding movement of said spindle of the operating handle is effected and the range of rotary movement of said spindle limited by the stops or lugs of said sleeve, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a soda fountain apparatus, a sirup jar inclosed in a case and provided with a discharge-cock, sliding means for engaging and disengaging said cock and for operating the same and an apertured chair provided with two inclined walls, said chair secured to the bottom of the case and-adapted to receive and support the body of the discharge-cock and thereby said sirup-jar, substantially as shown and described.
