PERCUSSION-SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,585, dated January 7, 1896.

Myinvention relates to an improved screen to separate sand, dac., from gravel more particularly; and it consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying` drawings, Figure 1 is al plan view of my improved screen, which is constructed and arranged in accordance with Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 8 is a detailed plan view of the cam and a portion of the connecting-rod. Fig. 4 is a side sectional elevation of the same. Fig'. 5 is a sectional View of the lubricating shaft and roller. Fig. 6 is a cross-section of the same.
To put myinvention into practice I provide a frame 1 of a suitable size and form of construction and arrange in an inclined position therein a screen-frame 2.
of two vertical standards 3 rigidly attached to the frame l and provided with a sliding bearing to which a swing-bar 4 is pivotally connected. This bar 4 is bent to pass beneath the frame of the screen and have bearings on suitable castings 5, which are provided with slotted openings 6 and bolts by means of which the said castings 5 may be moved in the direction of the length of the frame of the screen and thereby afford a means for regulating the throw of the screen, as will be hereinafter described. The rear end of the screen 2 is supported in about the same manner by means of sliding bearings operating upon vertical standards 8, a swing-bar 9, and the said sliding bearings provided with set-screws as` a means of making the same rigid at any ings and provided with cams 11.

This screen 2 is` supported at the rear or high end by means point along the length of the said standards 8 to elevate or lower the discharge end of the screen.
Arranged at the front of the apparatus is a transverse shaft 10 mounted in suitable bear- These cams 1l operate in connection with two levers or connecting-bars 12, (see Figs. 3 and 4,) the `other ends of the connecting-bars attached to the frame 2 of the screen.V These bars 12 are attached at either side of the frame of the screen 2 by means of castings pivoted to the said bars 12 and by means of a pin 14 to the frame, and the said castings provided with integral slotted arms 13 capable of moving the said pivotal connections betweenthe bars 12 and castings 14 in the direction of the length of the screen to regulate the throw of the same without respect to the size of the The draw-bars or levers 12 rest near their forward ends upon rolls or bearings 30 suitably supported upon brackets 29 secured to the frame 1, as seen in Fig. 4.
Connected to each side of the screen-box 2 at the discharge end are spring-couplings, each of which consists of a bar 26 pivoted to the box, having a swivel 27 through which a bar 16 is passed, having a strong spiral spring about the same, and the said bar 16 is coupled to a threaded eye-bar provided with a large hand-nut 28 by means of which the tension on the springs may be increased or diminished to regulate the force ofthe blow of the screen.
A strong metal bar 17 is arranged at the discharge end of the screen to act asa bumper for the same, and provided with spring-buffers 17/ to receive the blow.
Beneath the screen-box 2 is a pan 18 of a suitable form to receive the substance and discharge the same through an opening 20.
At the receiving end of the screen a suitable hopper 22 is placed, which may be of any desired construction.
To properly lubricate the rollers 24 and cams l1 the shaft 11 is hollowed at each end (see Figs. 5 and 6) and fitted with threaded lplugs to conne a suitable lubricant therein.

This shaft 11 is without rotation and moves horizontally with the motion of the bars 12 and is fitted with rollers 24, each having a small radial perforation 24', which when in a perpendicular position will register with another perforation 12 formed through the top wall of the oil-space 11.
In operation a screen (not shown) is mounted in a frame equal to the length and breadth of the screen-boX 2 and supported on the side pieces 19. The power-shaft 10 is given a rotary movement, and the cams 1l, engaging with the rollers 24, move the screen-box 2 forward, and, suddenly releasing the same, the springs bring the box back forcibly against the buffers 17', giving the screen a jar to vibrate the wire or metal used sufcient to prevent clogging and to sift the material through the meshes to the pan 1S below. By this construction the screen-box 2 may be elevated or lowered on the standards 3 8, the force of the blow can be increased or diminished by the springs, and the length of the stroke can be adjusted by means of the slotted connections 13 irrespective of the size or throw of the cams 11, and also the force of the blow may be increased or diminished by operating the hand-nuts 28 without regard to the length of the stroke of the cams. rlhe constant jar of the machine will constantly vibrate the shaft 11 and force small quantities of oil from the opening 12' to properly lubricate the rollers 24, and a portion of the said oil will pass through the openings 24 to lubricate the face of the cams 11.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a screen, the combination of the screen-box, the levers or drawbars having their connected front ends provided with rolls or bearings, the brackets having rolls or bearings upon which rest the said levers or drawbars, near their forward ends, the shaft having the cams adapted to engage the rolls or bearings carried by said levers, the castings pivoted to the sides of said screen-box, at their upper ends, and connected to the rear ends of said levers, at their opposite ends or angles, and provided with slotted arms adapted to provide for the movement of the pivotal connections between said levers and castings in the direction of the length of the screen, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with a screen constructed and operated as described, the cam and the hollow shaft 11 capable of containing a quantity of oil, a perforation 12 formed in the top, and a loose collar 24 and perforation arranged over the said oil chamber, the one perforation to register with the other when the parts occupy a certain position, whereby the lubricant may be jarred drop by drop through the perforations, to lubricate the roller and its operating cam, as set forth.
