To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN' II. CHRISTIE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of \Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in inkstands, and more particularly to that class of stands known as the feeding-reservoir type-that is, stands which are provided with a reservoir in which the ink supply is contained, and also suitable connections whereby the latter is fed to the consuming-well.
It is the object of my invention to provide a detachable reservoir, to improve upon the feeding mechanism contained therein, to simplify the method of controlling said mechanism, and further to generally simplify and improve upon the constructions of devices of the above class.
Upon the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, the same letters of reference denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and of which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved inkstand complete, the same showing three wells. Fig. 2 is a central vertical crosssection of the stand on line 2 2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detached plan view of one of the cylindrical reservoirs, having its cover removed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that my stand consists of a base, which can be sufficiently large to accommodate any desired number of reservoirs and wells. In Fig. 1 of the drawings I have shown three sets of these reservoirs and wells. It is obvious that each is independent of the other, thus permitting each to contain a different grade or color of ink.
The mechanical construction of the reservoirs and wells being the same in each one of the three sets, I will refer to them as one, and with like letters of reference. Said parts and mechanism are formed within and supported upon a base A, which can be made of brass or any other suitable material and of a size and shape which may be most pleasing to the eye, and also least liable to become accidentally upset.
The,base A is provided with a shallow circular recess B, which has a central bore' C therein, terminating in the supply-conduit D which leads to the consuming-well E. The
reservoir F, in which the ink supply is contained, is cylindrical in form and detachable from the base by reason of it having a peripheral screw-threaded teat Gr upon the bottom thereof, which is designed to engage the thread of the before-mentioned bore C. In order to insure a perfectly-tight connection between the reservoir and base, as above specified, I introduce a suitable packing 11 around the before-mentioned teat, which is tightly compressed thereon and between the base and the bottom of the reservoir by reason of said reservoir being screwed snugly to said base.
Within the reservoir I provide suitable valve mechanism I, whereby the flow of ink is controlled without the necessity of removing the cover of the reservoir, by reason of the stem of the valve being screw-threaded, as at K, to engage a threaded recess in a bridging which is formed in the upper portion of said reservoir, and also by reason of the extreme upper end of the stem of the valve having a square head L thereon which snugly fits into a corresponding square recess in the cover J. It is obvious from the above construction that by simply turning the cover to the left or right upon its seat will move the valve-stem and valve mechanism therewith, and by reason of the engagement of the threaded portion thereof with the before-mentioned bridging, said valve will be raised or lowered with relation to its seat, thus increasing or decreasing the flow of ink as desired.
In order to prevent the ink from drying up,
which may remain in the wells when not in use, I provide a cover M which may be of any desired or preferred construction. In the drawings I have shown the same of a sufficient length to cover all of the wells which appear. It may, however, be made in sections to cover each separate and independent, and said cover may also be made in any other suitable form.
In order to make the stand complete and desirable for all places, I form a suitable penholder-support in the rear by means of two thin angular sheet-metal pieces N, which can be attached to the base in any suitable manner, or by means of screws, as shown. Said supports are set at a sui'iicient distance from the reservoirs to also admirably serve as a holder for blotters, letters, cards, or papers, as will be better understood with reference to the dotted lines in Fig. 2.
By reason of the construction set forth, it will doubtless be appreciated that applicant has constructed a desirable inkstand, first, by reason of the construction permitting the convenient filling of the reservoir, and the controlling of the supply of ink from said reservoir to the consuming-wells, and, second, by reason of the convenient manner in which the reservoir may be detached from the stand for the purpose of cleaning or repairs.
Having thus described my invention, what Icla'im, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an inkstand of the class described, the combination with the base provided with a well and a fluid passage thereto, of a recess at the head of said passage, a detachable cylindrical reservoir secured within said recess, a Valve central within the base of the reservoir and provided with a stem having a screw threaded periphery near its upper end, a bridging to engage such threaded portion, and a detachable cover secured to the said stem and whereby said valve is operated.
2. In an inkstand of the class described, thecombination with the base provided with a well and a fluid passage thereto, of a recess at the head of said passage, a detachable cylindrical reservoir secured within said recess, a valve central within the base of the reservoir and provided with a screw threaded stem to engage a threaded portion of the reservoir, a square head upon said stem, and a detach able cover for said reservoir having a square recess to engage the square head of said stem whereby the latter is turned and the valve operated, substantially as described.
