UNITED STATES PATENT. Ormes.
IRA F. GORDON, OF TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN.
HAN D-PLANTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,432, dated December 31, 1895.
Application iiled May 22, 1895. Serial No. 550,262. (No model.)
To all whom t mayooncern:
Be it known that I, IRA F.- GORDON, of Traverse City, in the county of Grand Traverse and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Planters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in hand-planters, the object being to provide a hand-operated device of improved construction for planting potatoes, corn and other seeds.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in wliich Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the planter. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the movable jaw raised or extended vertically. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the position of the jaw when depositing seed Fig. 4. is a sectional plan view.`
the interior of sides E are connected to the inner walls of sides O by means of links F secured bysuitable pivots, as shown. rlhe lower corners of the links are rounded, as illustrated at G, while the upper corners are square in order to form stops I-I. Thus when the movable jaw is in the position illustrated in Fig. 1, the outer stop I-I is in engagement with the inner walls of the movable jaw, thus preventing a further downward movement thereof, while when in the position illustrated in Fig. 2 the stop I-I at the inner end of the link is in engagement with the inner wall of the fixed jaw, thus permittingthe link to move no further up, thereby holding the jaw in such position that its lower end is even with the extremity of the fixed jaw. lVhen the jaws are opened, as in Fig. 3, the movable jaw is raised upon the iixed jaw, so that the stop at the inner end of the. link is in service, while, when open the stop at the outer end is also brought into play for limiting the movement apart of the jaws.
The angular shoe I is secured to the outer side of the movable jaw, being slotted upon its vertical arm so as to be secured by clamping-bolts in proper position. To the back of the fixed jaw is secured the horizontal footpiece J. The handle K adjacent the upper end of the planting-tube is also adjustable vertically by means of the slot formed therein, through which extends the clamping-bolt.
Vhile I do not claim to be the first to invent a hand-planter provided with a vertically and outwardly movable jaw, I do claim to be the first to connect the same in the simple manner shown, whereby a most effectual service is secured at comparatively small expense.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I do claim is- 1. A hand planter comprising a seed receptacle, a fixed jaw at its lower end, the out- Wardly extending links pivotally connected to the fixed jaw, and the vertically and laterally movable jaw pivotally connected to the outer ends of said links, the said movable jaw closing with the fixed jaw, substantially as shown and described.
2. An improved hand planter comprising a seed receptacle, a fixed jaw at its lower end, the downwardly tapering sides for the said ixed jaw, the movable jaw, the tapering sides therefor, and the links pivotally connected at their ends to the sides of the fixed and movable jaws, substantially as shown and described.V
3. A hand planter comprising a seed receptacle, a fixed jaw, a movable jaw, and links connecting the jaws, substantially as shown and described.
fi. An improved hand planter comprisinga seed receptacle, a ixed jaw, a movable jaw, the links connecting the jaws, and stops H formed at the ends of said links, for engaging tremities thereof being' rounded, for the pur the movable and fixed jews in the manner pose, substantially as shown and described. 1o
shown and described. In testimony whereof I ztfiix my signature 5. An improved hand planter comprising t in presence of two witnesses.
