EUGENIO K. VOOD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PoLEoR PosT CONSTRUCTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,268, dated December 31 1895 Application filed May 18, 1895. Serial No. 549,802. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENIO K. WOOD, a citizen 4of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pole or Post Construction, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement whereby poles and posts, for all the various purposes of their use, including scaffolding, fence-posts, telegraph-poles, masts, and the like, may be produced of a simple, durable, and inexpensive construction, involving the formation of the article of tapering shape in longitudinal sections fitted together and tied together.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l shows by a view in elevation a post or pole of my improved construction embedded at its base in cement. Fig. 2 is a broken longitudinal sectional view showing the construction for building the post or pole in connected lengths; Fig. 3, a view in horizontal section taken at the line 3 on Fig. l and viewed in the direction of the arrow, being diagrammatic in its nature to show the longitudinal sections of which I prefer to construct my improved article disassociated in their relative positions; Fig. 4, a view of the upper end of the articlev illustrated in Fig. l; Fig. 5, a plan view of one of the encircling-bands; and Fig. 6, a horizontal section of the completed article, taken near its base, and showing a modiiication.
A is the center piece formed of a straight piece of wood or metal (though if formed of metal the center should be hollow, for the sake of lightness) of the rectangular shape in cross-section illustrated, or of any other suitable shape, according to the shape in which it may be desired to provide the finished article. In the faces of the center piece A are provided longitudinal grooves r, in which fit, at their straight edges, longitudinal strips B of the nature of wings, which taper along their outer edges toward the upper end of the post or pole and may be of the same material as that of the center piece, or of anyA other suitable material or materials. The tapering shape thus aorded to the article renders the wings B wedge-like in their tightening effect upon bands or collars O, O' and O2 provided to encircle the post or pole respectively near its base, between its ends and near its upper extremity. Each collar is provided in its inner circumference with notches q at intervals apart corresponding with those at which the wings B extend to iit upon the latter and bind them in place, the collars being driven against the wedging edges of the wings, thus to effect their mutual tightening. Upon the outer circumference of the collars O and O2, I provide the enlargements p', adjacent to which are formed in the collars the tie-rod openings p, each being preferably provided at a point midway between notches q, and in the outer circumference of the collar O corresponding with the openings p in the other collars I provide notches q'. Tie-rods D, having heads 0 at one end and threaded at the opposite end to receive nuts o', and which may be stiff metal rods or wire cable, or the like, are passed each through an opening p in the collar O, a notch q aligning therewith in the collar O", and a corresponding opening p in the collar O2. The head of each tying medium abuts against the under side of the collar O, and the nut o at the opposite end, which bears against the upper side of the collar O2, serves to tighten the parts rigidly together.
The construction thus described of a sectional post or pole is inexpensive and simple and aifords to the article strength as great as may be required for any purpose to which the article may be applied, and it may be variously modified without departure from my invention, provided the tapering wings be employedy encircled by the internally-notched collars tied together.
By inserting segmental lengths E, as indicated in Fig. 6, of wood or other suitable material, between adjacent wings B, the contour of the. post or pole may be rendered round, and by insertions of other-shaped pieces the contour may be formed according to desire. Moreover, insertions such as the insertions E, or, in fact, of any kind, afford braces for transversely bracing the wings.
To produce a post or pole, by my improved construction, of great length, for use, say, as a mast or telegraph-pole, it is desirable to form it in longitudinal tapering sections F, F', as indicated in Fig. 2, each section being IOO formed in the manner described, and the top of the lower section accurately conforming to and fittingthe base of the next succeeding section, and so on throughout the entire length ofthe article, the longitudinal sections being encircled, at their junctions, by the collars C2, which should then, accordingly, be wider than the collar C2 at the uppermost end, and all the sections being tied together at the collars by tie-rods D, each of which may be a continuous rod extending from the bottom to the top of the post or pole.
The construction of my improved article adapts it to be readily anchored firmly in the ground or in a bed G of cement or concrete, as indicated in Fig. l, since the stops and projections presented by the lowermost collar and the wings afford good holding to the ma terial in which the base of the article is embedded. y
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. As a new article of manufacture, a post or pole comprising longitudinal wings radiating from a common center and tapering along their outer edges, collars encircling sai d wings at intervals and havingl in their inner sides notches engaging said wings, and tie-rods con necting said collars together, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a post or pole comprising a center-piece provided with longitudinal grooves in its sides, wings inserted into said grooves and tapering along their outer edges, and collars encircling said wings at intervals and tied together, substantially as described. 4
3. As a new article of manufacture, a post or pole comprising a center-piece provided with longitudinal grooves in its sides, wings inserted into said grooves and tapering along their outer edges, collars encircling said wings at intervals and having in their inner sides notches engaging said wings, and tie-rods connecting said collars together, substantially as described.
el. As a new article of manufacture, a post or pole comprising a center-piece provided with longitudinal grooves in its sides, wings inserted into said grooves and tapering along their outer edges, collars eneirclin g said win at intervals and tied together, and inserted bracing pieces between the wings, substantially as described.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a post or pole formed in connected longitudinal sections each comprising a center-piece A provided with longitudinal grooves fr, wings l inserted into said grooves and tapering along their outer edges, collars encircling said wi ngs at intervals and at the j unction. between lon gitudinal sections and provided in their inner sides with notches engaging the wings, and. tie-rods connecting the collars together, substantially as described.
G. As a new article of manufacture, a post or pole comprising a center-piece A provided. with longitudinal grooves o', wings B inserted into said grooves and. tapering along their outer edges, collars C and Cg encircling the wings toward opposite ends of the post and having internal notches q, engaging said wings, and openings p, a collar C encircling the wings between the ends of the post and having internal notches (j, engaging said wings, and external notches q', and" rods D extended through said openings p and notches q and fastened to t-ie the collars in place, substantially as described.
