SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,263, dated December 31, 1895.
Application filed March 2, 1895. Serial No. 540,377. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GILSON \V. ROTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Generators for Gas-Engines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a generator and a gas and air regulator forthat class of engines in which a mixture of gas or gasoline and air under compression is ignited by an electric spark to operate the piston.
The object of my invention is to provide a generator which is operated by the governor of the engine to control the supply of gas or gasoline and air in order that proper proportions of each may be mixed in the generator to supply the engine with gas and will accurately regulate said supply and produce a uniform speed of the engine.
A further object is to provide means to automatically cut off the electric current from the engine-cylinder electrodes when the engine is running too fast and to automatically connect the circuit when the engine has assumed its normal speed.
It is obvious that a generator of this kind which mixes proper proportions of air and gas to supply the engine will run the engine uniform and regular.
I have aimed to make the subject of my invention of few parts and of such simple construction as to make it durable in use and economical to manufacture.
Vith these objects in view the invention still further consists of certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents my invention shown in a vertical sectional view, connected by the governor of the engine. Fig. 2 is aplan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a broken end view of the circuit-breaker.
A is a generator which is preferably made cylindrical in form with a casing over the top and provided with the outlet 0 and has the bottom 12 secured to same by means of bolts. Said bottom has the valve-seat projections S integral therewith and extending upward to a suitable distance and has the air-inlet d.
a is the valve which controls the supply of air to be mixed with the gases in the chamber.
E is the supply and controlling valve for the gas or gasoline, mounted on the top of the generator, and is provided with the inlet f, which communicates with the valve F leading to the supply of gas.

The vertical lever O is pivoted to the generator at the bottom and to the lever at the top. The lever G is loosely attached to the governor P at p.
J are ,upright standards from the engine to which the flexible spring circuit-connection lever K and the rigid lever L are attached.
N and M are the wires leading to the electrodes in the cylinder, which produce the spark to ignite the explosive materials.
R is the pipe which carries the gases to the cylinders of the engine.
In operation the stem 6 is adjusted to admit the proper proportions of gas through the taper-valve g and also with lower end of the stem of sufficient length to give the valve to the proper lift. After said stem is adjusted and locked by means of the thumb-screw the gas-supply stop-valve is opened and the engine is started to running at about the desired speed; but should the engine run faster than necessary it would cause the centrifugal governor-balls to spread by means of its velocity and would depress the lever G, which would reduce the supply of gas and air until the engine assumed its normal speed. When the gas and air valves are closed on account of the engine running too fast, the lever Gr will assume the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, which will depress the spring-lever circuit connection K and automatically cut oif the-circuit which prevents the electrodes in the cylinders from producing a spark, as at this time it will not be needed and thus save the batteries.
It Will be manifest to a skilled mechanic that the details of construction may be variously modified within the limits of my invention without materially changing the mode of action.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination, the chamber A, having the outlet pipe leading therefrom for the gas and air, the air inlet valve a within the chamber, the governor, the rod extending down through the casin g chamber A to control the movement or the air valve said rod being connected to the governor, the gas supply pipe, the gas valve and its chamber, the said controlling rod also extending through said gas valve chamber and connecting with the gas valve to control the same, substantially as described.
2. I11 combination, the chamber A, the air valve therein, the gas valve chamber, surmounting the chamber A and connected therewith by a passage in line with the air inlet valve, the gas valve in said chamber and a rod passing through the gas valve chamber connected to the gas valve and having its lower depending free end extending through the conduit leading to the chamber A, and in line with the air valve to control the same, substantially as described.
3. In combination, the valve chamber and valves, the valve rod, the igniting arms K, L, having the yielding contact, the governor, the lever connection G between governor and valve rod, said lever extending transversely by the contact arms and arranged to separate the same when the valve mechanism is closed.
