SEWER-TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,010, dated December 24, 1895.
Application nea April 11, 1895.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK JOHN SLAVIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewer- Traps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improved trap for sewer and other water pipes, and contains a liquid seal to prevent sewer-gas and noxious vapors rising in the drain-pipe.
The object of my present invention is to provide a simple and efcient form of trap which will always maintain a liquid seal, preventing the siphoning of said seal under all conditions and pressures.
With this object in view my invention consists essentially of a closed case, an inlet-pipe passing into' said case and provided with a bend within the same, and an outlet-pipe extending outward and downward from the top of case, said pipes forming a goose-neck composed of two sections, the opposing ends of said sections being separated.
My invention 'consists further in providing the inlet-pipe with openings upon opposite sides of the bend to permit the sealing liquid to pass into the case.
My invention consists also in certain de tails of construction and combination of parts, all of which will be fully described, and then designated in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure l is a side view of my improved trap. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view showing the top removed and carrying the inlet and outlet pipes.
In constructing my trap, I employ metallic case A, having a polygonal nut B formed integral with its bottom and upon the exterior.
A top C is screwed upon the case A, and tightly closes the same. An inlet-pipe D passes through the top C, extending into the case, and is constructed with an upward bend CZ, which is located wholly within the case, and the end of said pipe is preferably extended a short distance above the horizontal center of the trap. in the pipe D, upon opposite sides of the bend, the purpose of said openings being to permit the water as it passes through the pipe to escape into the trap and also permit the water in the trap to flow back into the bend after siphonage has taken place, and thus form a seal in the said pipe.
A discharge or outlet pipe E is secured to the top, its upper end extending a very short distance into said trap. The pipe is theny curved outward and downward, as shown.
The inlet and outlet pipes are rigidly connected to the top, making tight joints, and by removing the top the pipes are withdrawn also.
The liquid seal F is formed in the bend of the inlet-pipe andin the case surrounding the pipe, the level of seal II I being preferably above the end of the inlet-pipe.
Now, in operation, the water passes down the inlet-pipe, fills the case, and passes out through the outlet-pipe, and when a vacuum forms in the discharge-pipe the air contained withinthe inlet-pipe passes through the case and the discharge-pipe. During all these operations there is a certain amount of water within the case, and as soon as siphonage ceases a portion of the water within the case will pass back into the bend of the pipe through the openings d', so that a seal is sure to be effected, and will always be maintained, as it is clear that no matter how great the pressure on the inlet-pipe there will always be a definite quantity of water forced through the openings into the case, which upon cessation of operation will liow back again into the bend and effect the seal. v
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
l. An improved trap, consisting of a case having a stationary threaded top, and a detachable rounded bottom, an inlet pipe passv IOO let pipe, independent of the case, said inlet pipe having a bent `or returned end having- 4 openings on the sides, an outlet pipe which passes through the top and projects into the said detachable, case, substantially as shown and described.
3. An improved trap, consisting of a detachable case, provided With a hexagon nut at the bottom, and having a screw thread at the 1o top of the case, an inlet pipe passing through the top, of the case and returning Within said case, and an outlet pipe passing through the top and projecting into the said case, all sub stantally as shown and described. v
