Be t known that I, J OHN G. SPEIDEL, a ctzen of the United States, resding at Read- 111g, in che eounty 0f Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have nvented certan new and usefu1 Improvements in Elevators, of Wheh che following; s a speeficaton.
Ths nventon relates 130 elevators, and par-- ticularly t0 hand-elevators or dumb-waiters, and its novelty, purpose, and effect Will be fu1ly understood from the followng descrption and claims When taken in connection Wth the annexed drawings.
The object of the nventon is to provide a simple and durable machine for opera-ring hand-elevators or dumb-waiter ears.
A further objeet of the nventon s to provde a machine f0r controlling hand-elevators or dumb-water cars and a ba1l 01 1011er frieton-coupling combned With a brake-dsk, so that sadear may be stopped in 'cs travel postvely and automatieally, and without the 1east shock to the parts of che machine, as soon as the hand-rope is let go.
A fur'ther object of the inventon is to provde a supportng man frame for the sheaves and for che brake mechansm 0f 110ve1 and pecular consnrueton, aifordng eompactness of the working parts of the machne and ease in erection, requiring less space upon the cross-beamof the elevator-well and producng a much lighter maehne than those now in use.
A further object of the nventon is to provide a brake-frame of new and novel construction, to house the frcton balls or rollers, and to warrant effeetve and positive aeton of said rollers between the said frame and the brake-dsk.

The elevator-well 1 has the sual top crossbeam 2, upon whch s secured themain frame of my machne. Ths frame consists of a base 8, havng a central flanged hole 4, from whch extend upward and outwardly frOm each other the arms 5,'the latter beng formed in the same peee wth the sad base, With an openng 6 between them in the same vertcal plane With the flanged hole 4, in Wheh the gude-sheave is operated. Extending laterally f1om eaeh of the a1ms, and formed in the same peee wth the a1ms and the sad base 3 and projeeting upward a1; rght angles from the latter, are the arm-wngs 7 in whel1 theguidesheave 8 is journaled. The base 3 s also provided with a swvel gude-sheave 9, the pivot of which is in the same vertieal plane wth the hole 4 and the sheave8. The object 01 the guide-sheave 9 is to 1ead the hoistingrope to the weight in such a way that 111 swiveling 21101111d its pivot t11e rope 1s always in a convenent position whether t11e weight be 011 the rear, righi: or 1eft band side of the elevator-well. In the top of the anns 5 are formed the jonrnal-bearngs 101 the drivingshaft 10, the latte1 being provic1ed With a sp1it coupling 1nembe1 11 nea1 each of sad j 011111211- bearngs 5. 'lhis shaftextenc1s through the center of the bmke-fmme 12, (the 1atter be 111g hereinafter more fu1ly deseribed,) end carries the sheave 13, on one side of the brakeframe 12, 111 the seme vertical p1ane With the 1101e 4 end s11eme 8. The 1111b of the sheave 13 fonns t11e ceupling n1ember 14, corresponding to one of the coup1ing mexnbers 11, and upon the inner fece of the shezwe 13 is a circular cavity 15 and a sde bearing-flzmge 16. Opposte t11e sheave 13, upon the shaft 10, is mounted the other coupling member 17 hzwing (L flange 18 and a ci1eular czwty 19, and between these said side bearng- flanges 16 and 18 is 1oose1y monnted upon the shaft the brake-disk 20, hzwing apertures 21 whieh contain friction-plugs 21. These p1ugs projeet slightly upon e;1e11 side of the brake disk, the ends bearing in the cavities and 19 and hzwing the flanges 16 and 18 surround ing and also bearing upon the said plugs. This arrangen1ent gives the coupling members 13 and 17 21 double bearing upon the brake-disk end warrants' improved results attainable thereby. 'lhe aforesaid parts 13, 17 and are loosely 1nounte(1 upon the shaft, and said parte ere ac1justed upon the said shstft relative to 69011 ether by 1nezms of the sp1it conpling members 11.
The brake-disk 20 is surrounded by the brake-frzune 12, the latter being of trangu- 1m shape, end et eaeh angle is foiinec1 an i11- c1ined pocket 22,1n which is housed t1 1e friational rollers 23, having the bearings upon the periphery of the C11111n 01 disk 20 and. the 111- c1ine of the poekets.
It will be observec1 that the brake-frame, a1though shown and descrbed as triangular, may be of other ang1es 01 forme, in accordzmce Wth the number of pockets desired.
'1he brake-frmne 12 is bolted to one of the arms 5, and has pivoted thereto a weighted lever 24, having a projecton 25 reac1iing in under one of the rollers between the bmkefreme and the said bmke-disk, With the 01)- ject of kee ping t11e 1011e1 (which by its OWI1 weight would fal1 away from the pocket 111- o1ine) a1ways in contact With the brake-disk and the said pocket incline.
In the operation of hoistng With tbis machine the bra-ke-disk and the c1uteh members Wth side bearing-fianges are revolvec1 With the rollers offe1ing no resistance to its 1notion, while during the operz1ton 01": 1ower- 111g the breke-dsk is held fast by 1neans of the locking-rollers and the friction between the faces of the eoupling member 17 and shezwe 13, which has to be overcomc by the power applied to the band-topo. The band- 1ope wheel 26 is keyed upon the shaft 10, and the inner fece of 1ts fianges, which dvergc fron1 e:1c11 othen and for1n 21 V-shaped sez1t, beve ribs 27 net opposite each other, but :1t intervals, so that the ribs of one flange will come opposite anc1midway the space between the 1ibs of the other flange. Tl1is causes un interloeking grp between seid whcel 111d the hm1d-rope 28, so that there is 110 possibility of the hand-rope slipping. The lift-rope 29 is attached to the 0211 30, from whence it extends upwanl through 2111 aperture in the bezun 2, through t11e hole 4, between the sheaves 8 and 13, overthe 1atter, between the shezwes 13 and 9, under the 1z1tter,and over the shezwe 31 to the weight 32.
It will be unc1erstood thztt the eforesaid brake-frzune,brake-disk,rollers,ancl weighted lever constitute the brake meehahism.
Refe1rng to the modified form of my machine shown in Figs. 7 and 9, the base is of approxhnately rectangnler slmpe, and the journal-beming arme 34 are fonned in the same piece With it and carry the drvingshaft. Projecting upward1y end centrally from the base end laterally from the saic1 arms is the journa1-bearn g wing 35, in which is journaled one end of a supplemental shaft 36, having its other end in an enter bearingpost 37, 1nd carrying a gear-whee1 38, which meshes with 0110 of the pinions 39 upon the driving-shaft. The supplemental shaft 39 else carres the main sheave 01 (11.u111 40 of this machine, and one 01' more sheaves 41111ay be employed to carry end guide the lift-rope 42. from the cm to the weight, as clezw] y shown in the drawings.
The brake mechanism is identical With the brake mechan ism shown in the first-described machine, end s operated in the seme way; but the coupling members are formec1 upon the ends of the pinions 39. 'T-WO pinions 39 are shown, sinee it may be desirable to plaee the post 37 (shown in Fig. 9) upon the opposite side of the machne and turn the s11aft 36 end for end, and fix t11e hand-rope whee1 011 the other end of its shaft 33, therebynmking the machine iight 01 left handed, end instead of the weighted leveraspring 46 is employed. (See Fig. 16.) Further modified fo1n1s of this spring are denoted by 111111101a1s 49 and 46" in Fgs. 14 and 15.
This n1achine 1s made with its parts in .1 ve1y compact form, end possesses much greater strength and power thzm t11e firstmentoned machine, anc1 1s ntendecl to be used on 1a1ge hand-elevators; but sinee it employs the same bmke 1nechanism t can be 0pemted quite as easily end aecurately as the small maehine, always holding the 102111 automatieally.
Referringto the modification shown in Figs. 8 and 12, each side fece of the brake-disk 47 has a cireulzueavity 48, in Which is locata1---- a frction-gasket 49, projecting slightly beyond the disk-faces, such projeetng pertion engaging like cavites 4:8 in the coupling members 50 and 51.. The n1ain frame 52 has a pocket 53, carrying friction-balls 54.
The operatien of this class of machinery is so well known that a detailed description thereof will not be here given. Itwill be observed, however, that the pants carried by the main shaft of each of the machines can be readly adjusted 01 removed, saving mueh time and labor, while the frctional bearings of the brake-dsk and flanges can be very easly and convenently adjusted, While the whole machine can be put together and taken apart With great convenience by means of my improved construction and arrangement between the said parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A brake attachment for band elevators, eonssting of the brake disk, the brake frame having inelined pockets, the rollers housed in sad pockets between the said brake disk and frame, the weighted lever pivoted to the said frame and havingaprojection adapted to engage the under side of one of the said rollers, as set forth.
2. The brake-disk havin g frietion-plugs and the coupling-members adapted t0 engage the side faees 0f said plugs and having crcular flanges adapted te bear on the peripheral faces of said p1ugs, eombined With the brake-frame surroundng said disk and having a series of pockets, andthe rollers housed in the poekets and adapted t0 engage the periphery of said disk, substantally as described.
3. The combination of the brake disk havin g fricton-.plugs, With the coupling-member adapted te engag'e the side faces of said plugs and having a flange adapted to bear on the peripheral faces 0f said plugs, snbstantially as descrbed.
4. The combination of the brake disk having frietional bearings projecting from each side face, wth the couplng members engaging said bearings, the brake frame having poekets, and the ro1lers contained in the pockets and engaging the periphery of .the disk, as set forth.
5. The combination of a suitably journaled shaft and the brake mechanism through which said shaft extends, With the conpling member 14 carrying a sheave, the coupling member 17, the sp lit coupling members adjnstab1y seeured upon the shaft to connect the sheave and member 17 with the shaft and to regulate the frictional bearing between the brake mechanism and the said sheave and member 17, as set forth.
6. In a dun1b water, the combination of the brake frame, the weighted lever pivoted to the said frame and having a portion projecting into the latter, the rollers, the brake disk, and the sheave 13, having its hub formed into one eonplng member, With the main shaft having the other coupling 1nember adjustably secured thereon, as set forth.
7. Ina dumb water, the combnation with the.car, the draft rope and the band rope, of the main frame having journal bearing anns branched from the base of the frame with a space between them, the sheave journaled in said space, the shaft journaled in said arn1s a'nd earrying a coupling sheave, and the band rope whee1, and the brake meehanism, substantally as set forth.
8. The combination of the man frame provded Wth a fianged hole and havng j ournal bearing a11ns branched from its base Wth a space between them, a shaft journaled in said ar1ns and a sheave on said shaft, the arn1 wngs projecting upward at right angles to the base, the sheave 8 journaled in the arm wings, and the swvel sheave pivoted upon said base in the same' plane With the said hole and the sheave 8, and a draft rope passing through said 1101e and around said sheaves, as set forth.
9. The combination of the main frame provided With a fianged hole and havng j ournal bearing arms branehed from its base with a space between them, a shaft journaled in said an1s and a sheave on said shaft, the a1m wings formed integral With the base and the said journal a1ms, the sheave 8 journaled in the arm wngs and revolving in the said space, the swivel sheave pivoted upon said base in the same plane With the said hole and the sheave 8, a draft rope passng through said hole and around sad sheaves, and the brake frame seeured upon the main frame between the said jou mal arms, the brake disk upon the said shaft, and the rollers loeated between the brake frame and the disk, as set forth.
