Be it known that I, DAVID E. HUNTER, of Cambridge, county. of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Lock-Rods forfOard-Catalogues, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to lock-rods for cardcatalogues, the object of the invention being to provide a suitable fastening device for the lock-rod to prevent the same being withdrawn, either accidentally or mischievously, and the cards disarranged.

My invention comprehends a support, preferably in the form of a socket, adapted to be secured in or to the drawer end, usually the front, and adapted to receive the outer end of the lock-rod inserted therethrough, said rod end being received within said support and thereby removed from ready access, eX- cept by the use of a releasing device which I shall hereinafter refer to as a key.

The rod end is preferably concealed by a closure, filling the opening in the support, through which the rod is inserted, which closure is removable only by the use of a key.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional detail View showing my invention; Fig. 2, a right-hand or face view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, top and side views respectively of the preferred form of fastening-collar, and Fig. 4 an illustration of a convenient form of key.

Referring to the drawings in the particular construction selected to illustrate my invention, A is a suitable support, (shown in the form of a socket and as set into the drawer .the fastening-collar c, threaded to co operate with the threaded socket A, as shown.

The fastening-collar, loose on the neck I) and therefore loose on the lock-rod, is held in position on the said neck, in the present instance, by a lock-nut b threaded on the end of the lock-rod.

As herein shown, the closure 1) is provided with diametrically opposite longitudinal grooves b diverging from the face of the closure toward the back thereof, as shown in Fig. l, for the reception of a suitable keyas, for instance, shaped as shown in Fig. 4, wherein the key K is bifurcated or forked at the end, the two arms 7070 being adapted for insertion in the grooves 19 referred to.

The fastening-collar c at its periphery is provided, as herein shown, with a groove 0, which when in proper position registers with one or the other of the grooves 19 Referring to Fig. 4, it will be seen that one of the arms, as k, of the key K is longer than the other arm. When the key is inserted in the closure b, the long arm of the key abuts against the face of the fastening-collar. The key is then rotated, rotating with it the closure and its connected lock-rod B until the groove 19 which receives the long arm of the key, registers with the groove 0 in the fastening-collar c,when the key will at once slide forward and its long arm will enter the groove in the fastening-collar, enabling the latter to be turned by the key and unscrewed from the socket to release the lock-rod. The lock-rod is inserted and secured in the socket in like manner by the key K ,which is afterward withdrawn.

It will be seen that the fastening collar which alone fastens the lock-rod to the socket is at all times concealed by the closure b, and is accessible only through the opening or openings in the closure by means of a suitable device, which I call a key, provided for that purpose.

The closure with its connected lock-rod may be rotated individually without in any way affecting the fastening-collar, in which the closure and its lockrod may rotate freely.

The member a of the device is one form of support and is so denominated in the claims.

My invention is not limited to the construction or arrangement of parts herein shown, for

it is evident my invention may be embodied in other constructions without departing from its spirit and scope.

Having described my invention and without limiting myself as to details, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

1. The combination with a threaded support, of a lock-rod, and a fastening collar rotatably mounted and held against longitudinal movement on said rod, and threaded to engage said threaded support, substantially as described.

2. a The combination with a threaded, socketlike support, of a lock rod inserted through an opening therein, a fastening collar rotatably mounted and held against longitudinal movement on said rod, and threaded to engage said threaded support, and a closure for the opening in said support to substantially conceal the said. fastening collar, substantially as described.

3. A threaded socket-like support, a lock rod, and a closure for said support provided with a key opening, combined With a fastenin g collar rotatably mounted on the said rod at the back of and held against longitudinal movement 011 said rod by said closure, and threaded to engage said support, and a key adapted for insertion Within the said support, through said key opening, to engage said collar and rotate the same, substantially as described.

4. A threaded socket-like support, a lock rod, a closure mounted upon the end thereof, combined with a threaded fastening collar rotatably mounted upon the said closure and restrained thereby against longitudinal movement on said rod, and a lock nut to retain the said fastening collar in its position on said closure, substantially as described.

5. The combination with a support, of a lock rod and a fastening collar rotatably mounted and held against longitudinal movement on said rod, and adapted to engage and lock with said support to thereby hold said rod in position, substantially as described.
