Be it known that I, JAMES T. COWLEY, of Lowell, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Store-Service Apparatus; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to apparatus for conveying cash and parcels to and from the sales- .mens stations and cashiers desk, and' it consists of certain novel features, arrangements and combinations hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the figures illustrating my invention, Figure 1 represents a. side view of my improved carrier, showing the arrangement of the parts in full lines and also in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an end view of the. carrier. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a part of the carrier.

Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.

Extending upwardly from the carrier-frame A, near each end, are standards A, in which are journaled the carrier-wheels B, which are adapted to run upon a suitable line or way 0, which is provided with enlarged ends 0 upon which the carrier is adapted to wedge at each end thereof. Located in the frame of the carrier is a flat spring D, which is secured by means of a bolt and nut D to the bottom plate 'A of the carrier-frame A.

secured a handle E, and at each end of the carrier frame there is pivoted at F alever F, which has an upper finger F adapted to be in contact with each free end of the flat spring D, and said levers pass through slots F formed in each of the handles E of thebottom plate A of the frame. To the bottom plate A there is secured a fiat spring G by the same bolt and nut D which secure the fiat spring D in place. Said spring G extends along underneath the said plate A as shown in the drawings. around said rod between the lugs H is arranged a spring J, secured to said rod J by a pin J and the opposite end of the spring bears against one of the lugs H To one end of this rod is fastened a pin J projecting from each side of the rod, and working in both slots A in the arms A The opposite end of this rod is pivoted at J 4 to the arm J of the cover L, and this cover L is pivoted to the receptacle K at L.

Supposing a carrier is located at the salesmans end and it is desired to send the money to the cashier, the operator takes hold of the eye K on the receptacle K and pulls down said receptacle to a vertical position, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1, and in this downward movement of the lever H, carrying the receptacle K, the pin J on the rod J travels along the cam-slot A in the arm A During the first half of this movement, as indicated in inclined dotted position in Fig. 1, the pin J traveling in the first half of the cam-slot A will maintain the rod J in substantially the same position which it had in full. lines, Fig. 1, because the part of the cam-slot 1n the first half of this movement is formed wlth the pivot A as a center; but in the continuation of the downward movement the pin J 3 will move in that portion A of the slot A which is not drawn from the same center, but is inclined downwardly, and as the pin J 3 travels in this downward inclined portion of the slot, the rod J will be pushed downward and raise the cover of the receptacle to the position shown in vertical lines, Fig. 1. Now assuming the money has been placed in the receptacle and it has been raised to the position shown in full lines, Fig. 1, the flat spring G,

bearin g upon the roller II mountedin the end of the lever ll, pushes downwardly uponthis roller and tends to hold the lever II in a horizontal position in contact with the cushioning-stop M, and as the lever H is raised to this horizontal position, the pin J 3 traveling backward in the portion A of the slot A will allow this spring J, which has been compressed by the downward movement of the lever II, to exert its tension to close the cover L of the receptacle K by tending to push upward 011 the rod J as the pin moves backward in the canrslot A so that by the time the receptacle in its upward movement has reached an inclined position (shown in dotted lines) the cover has been closed and remains closed during the continued downward movement of the receptacle, which is held in said upward position by the spring G.

To dispatch the carrier to the other end of the line, the operator grasps the handle E and lever F, and by exerting pressure thereon the upper end F of lever F pushes downward on the spring D and releases same from close contact with the enlarged portion C of the track 0, and sufiicient impulse being given to the carrier, it is sent along the line to the opposite end thereof.

When the carrier has been received at the opposite end of the way it is operated in identically the same manner as above described, and after the change has been made it is dispatched back to the salesman, and lodges upon the enlarged portion C at his end of the track.

I do not limit myself to the arrangement and construction shown as the same 1n ay be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus ascertained the nature and set forth a construction embodying my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. In a store service apparatus, the combination with the way, of a carrier mounted thereon, a lever pivoted to the body of the carrier, a receptacle carried upon the opposite end of said lever, a spring bearing on the upper end of said lever, a cover normally closing said receptacle, a rod connected at one end to said cover and having its opposite end mounted in the body of the carrier, a cam surface on which said opposite end is adapted to move and means for opening said cover as the receptacle approaches its lowest position.

2. In a store service apparatus, the combination with the way, of a carrier mounted thereon, a levcrpivoted to the body of the carrier, a receptacle carried upon the opposite end of said lever, a spring bearing on the upper end of said lever, a cover pivoted to said receptacle and normally elosin g the same, a rod connected at one end to said cover and having its opposite end mounted in the body of the carrier, a spring mounted on said rod tending to hold the cover closed, and means for opening said cover against the tension of said spring as the receptacle approaches its lowest position.

In a store service apparatus, the combination with the way, of a carrier mounted thereon, a lever pivoted to the body of the carrier, a receptacle carried upon the opposite end of said lever, a spring bearing on the upper end of said lever, a cover pivoted to said receptacle and normally closing the same, a rod connected at one end to said cover and having its opposite end mounted in the body of the carrier, and means for positively keeping said cover closed until the receptacle approaches its lowest position.

4c. In a store service apparatus, the combination with the way, of a carrier mounted thereon, a lever, pivoted to the body of the carrier, a receptacle carried upon the end of said lever, a cover normally closing said receptacle, a spring bearing upon the upper end of said lever, a rod pivotally connected at one end to said cover and having its opposite end working in an irregular cam slot to retain the cover normally closed and open the same as the receptacle approaches its lowest position.
