DETONATING TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,148, dated December 10, 1895.
Application filed October 7, 1895. Serial No. 564,894. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern;
Be it known that I, JAMES S. TOBITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detonating Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to those detonating toys which include a pair of separate and distinct members-to wit, a projectile to which motion is to be imparted and an exploding device for igniting a percussion-wafer or other fulminate that causes the flight of the proj ectile. My projectile is preferably a ball of any suitable size and material, and has a radial bore or chamber for the reception of the fnlminating device, while the exploder is a handled implement provided with a firingplug capable of traversing said chamber or bore.
To use the toy, one or more wafers or pellets are placed in the chamber, the plug` inserted within the latter, and then the butt-end of the handled implement is struck against a solid object, the result being to explode said pellet and thereby produce suflicient force to throw the ball a great distance, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is an elevation showing the dierent members of Iny detonating toy separated from each other. Fig. 2 shows the toy in position for being fired off, the ball being sectioned.
The ball or other projectile A may be made of wood or other suitable material or materials, and is bored radially to admit a short sheet-metal tube B, the latter being open at its outer end but closed at its inner end,`so as to form a chamber within which a percussion wafer or pellet O may be safely exploded. These wafers are small disks coated with any fulminate that will produce sufcient impelling force without being too expensive for the small boy to indulge in. Therefore the wafers used for iiring the well-known toypistol will be especially adapted for projecting my ball.
The iiring device of the toy is a plug or pin D, having a butt E and usually a wooden handle F, although these three parts may constitute a single piece of metal, as represented at D E Fn Fig. 2.
As previously stated, in using my toy a pellet C is first run into the chamber B until it comes in contact with the closed end thereof, and then the ball A is impaled on the exploding-implement in the manner seen in Fig. 2, the firing-plug D of said implement being snugly but not very tightly iitted in said chamber. The butt E of the implement is now struck against a solid object with considerable; force, thereby driving the plug D' up within the chamber B and thus exploding the wafer C, the result being the generation of sufficient force to throw the ball a considerable distance, the range being determined by the weight of the projectile and the power of the fulminate.
The dottedlines a a in Fig. l indicate oblique vanes or wings that may be so applied to the ball as to impart to it a gyratory motion.
Finally, if the ball should be made of some very solid material there would be no need of the metal tube B; but the latter is preferred when a wooden projectile is used.
I claim as my inventionm l. A detonating-toy consisting of a chambered projectile, adapted to receive a percussion wafer; and an exploding-device having a firing-plug that traverses said chamber and ignites the wafer, in the manner described,

2. A detonating-toy consisting of the projectile A, having a tube B fitted Ywithin it, which tube is adapted to receive a percussionwafer; and a hammer-shaped exploding-device D E F, the plug of which, D, is adapted to Ytraverse said tube and ignitev the wafer, in the manner described, and for the purpose stated.
