SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,843, dated December 3, 1895. Application led June l, 1895. Serial No. 551,394. (No model.) Patented in England April l0, 1895, No. 7,345.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CARL PosTRANncxY, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-I-Iungary, residing at Lbtau, Dresden, in the Kingdom of Saxony, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Boiling-Pans, Heaters, Coolers, and the Like, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 7,345, bearing date April 10, 1895,) of which the following is a specification.
In jacketed boiling-pans, heaters, coolers,
- and the like as usually constructed the jacket is secured to the boiler or other receptacle by rivets, the joint lbeing made steam, air, or water tight by the insertion of suitable packing. In use the rivets gradually become loosened or eaten away, thus causing an escape of steam, air, or water generally under pressure, which in the case of steam may be attended with personal injury, and in most cases spoiling the material under treatment. By the use of my invention such defects are obviated, the objectionable rivets are dispensed with, and the boiler is not drilled with holes, thereby forming a complete water-tight receptacle.
In order that my said invention may be pan ticularly described and ascertained, reference is hereby made to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Figures 1, 2, and 3 illustrate several forms of vesselsto which my improved means of applying the jacket is shown. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views, partly in section. Fig. 6 shows the usual method of makin g the joint between the jacket and the boiler, heater, cooler, or other vessel.

The boiler or other receptacle, hereinafter referred to as the boiler, is tted with an annular cup or cups c, which may be formed integral with the boiler a, as shown in Fig. 1, or iitting the boiler, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The jacket is formed near the outer edge or edges with holes d d, having a raised portion or bur, as shown moreclearly in Figs. 4 and 5.
The method of making the joint is as follows: The jacket is placed so that the outer edge or edges is or are inclosed by the annular cup or cups c when a suitable metal is run in in a melted state and allowed to cool, thus making the joint perfectly steam, water, or air tight.
The outer edges of the jacket may be corrugated or otherwise bent, so as to afford a greater hold to the casting metal.
The usual connections for supply and exhaust are fitted to the jacket, as shown at e e, Figs. 1 and 2.
It will be obvious that should it be found necessary to remove the jacket the casting metal is iirst melted by any suitable means. The jacket is then readily detachable.
I claim- 1. A jacketed vessel for heating or cooling purposes, consisting of a receptacle ahaving an annular cup c, the exterior jacket Z) having an edge portion provided with holes d and inclosed by the said annular cup, said jacket being arranged at a suitable distance from the receptacle to provide an intervening space for the heating or cooling fluid, and a body of metal flowed into the cup and interlocked with the holes in the edge of the jacket, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination in a j acketed vessel for heating and cooling purposes, of the receptacle a having an annular cup c, the exterior jacket b having an edge portion provided with holes d having burred edges, and a body of cast metal filling the space between the internal surface of the cup and the external surface of the receptacle and interlocked with the said holes and the burred edges thereof, substantially as and for the purposes described.
