RATCHET-DRILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,306, dated November 26, 1895.A

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. WELCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milton, in the county of Northumberland, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ratchet-Drills, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in ratchet-drills of that class designed more especially for use in mining coal and the like; and it has for its object, among others,to provide a simple, cheap, and easily-operated device of this character having provision for feeding faster or slower, as may be desired, and in which the working barrel is sleeved over the feed-nut to give it strength and to cause it to work easily and smoothly, the screw being so arranged that when it is desired to remove the bit the said screw can be run down into its place and force the bit out ofthe socket. Simple and efficient means are provided for causing the simultaneous rotation and feeding forward of lthe bit or drill. I also provide an improved adjustable post or support for one end of the device.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear,and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is aside elevation showing my improved drill set up and ready for operation. Fig. 2 isv an end elevation looking at the parts beyond the line 2 2 of Fig. l, as seen in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal vertical section through the drill mechanism with a portion of the screw-rod broken away. Fig. et is an end elevation looking at the parts on the left of the line 2 2 of Fig. l.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the main working barrel or cylinder, having at one end a polygonal opening a to receive the shank a of the bit or drill A', which may be of any Serial No. 556,577. (No model.)
well known or approved form of construction, and held in the opening or socket in the usual Way. This cylinder or barrel may be of any suitable material or of any required dimensions. This barrel is provided with a ratchet A2, while beyond this ratchet the barrel is reduced in its exterior diameter, as seen at a2, and this reduced portion is fitted within the socket portion B of the feed-nut B,whi ch latter is provided with a ratchet B12.
O is the feed-screw rod engaging the interior threads of the feed-nut, as seen in Fig. 3, and this screw-rod is of such a length that when it is desired to remove the bit or drill from its socket the-said rod may be vscrewed in sufficiently to bear against'the end of the shank of said bit or screw, and further rotation of the screw forces the said bit out, as Will be readily understood.
In order to support the outer end of the drill I provide an adjustable post, as seen in Fig. l, which is composed of the barrel or tubular portion D, provided with a collar d, adjustably held thereon by means of a' setscrew d', andwithin this ltube and collar is designed to slide the portion D of the post, which is held in position by the set-screw d', which holds the collar CZ in place, or the latter may be fast upon the barreldD, if desired. Adjustably sleeved upon the portion D is a collar D2, adjustably held in position by the set-screw cl2, and this collar forms a support for the sliding dog or loop on the collar C held on the end of the screw-rod Oby the setscrew o9, which loop or dog is substantially semicircular and embraces the upper end of the portion D', as seen in Fig. l. The outer end of the screw-rod O is formed with a curved extension Ofto embrace the extension D. The collar C9 may be moved back and forth and turned to clear the loop O/ from the screw-rod. In addition to thus making the post or support extensible, the said parts are further designed to be lengthened or shortened by means of the lower portion D3, the lower end of which maybe rounded or pointed to facilitate its insertion into the ground or to aid in better holding it in position, the upper portion thereof being screw-threaded, as seen at d3, to engage the interior threads of the barrel D. This portion Dsis designed to be rotated to raise or lower the post by means IOO of the bar D4 passed horizontally through anopenin'g in the portion D3, as seen in Fig. 1, the operation being similar to that of a jackscrew. E is an arm or lever having an extension c, with an opening e, in which is loosely received the main working barrel A, while to the opposite side of said block or lever is secured a plate E', having an extension e2,with an opening e3, through which the portion a2 of the barrel A loosely works, as seen in Fig. 3. This plate or arm E is secured to the arm or bracket E by bolts E2 passed through it, as seen in Fig. 3, and provided with nuts e4, which renders the said plate rei movable for any purpose desired.
F is a pawl, one end of which is adapted to engage the ratchet A2, while its other end bears upon the block or lever E, said pawl being retained in position by avbolt F/ passed through the lever E and pawl between, and at right angles to the bolts E2, which hold the plate E in position, the said bolt F being provided at one end with a nut f and at the other end with a head j, between which and the adjacent face of the plate is arranged a coil-spring f2, as clearly seen in Fig. a. The bolt is free to work en'dwise in the block or lever E, and the amount of movement of the pawl may be regulated by adjustment of the nut. This construction permits of the necessary yielding movement of the pawl to pre vent injury thereto, as will be readily understood. The extensions e e2 embrace the ratchet A2, as seen in Figs. l and 3, and the block or lever E is cutaway, as shown at e5, to
`provide room for the working of said ratchet.
G is an arm having an extension g, with an opening g', through which the inner end of the nut B loosely extends and works, and upon the opposite side of this arm is secured a plate G, having the extension g2, with opening g3, through which passes the nut B, as seen best in Fig. 3, and between these two extensions the ratchet B2 is arranged, as seen in Figs. l and 3.
H is a pawl adapted to co-operate with the ratchet B2, as seen in Figs. l and 2, the lower end of this pawl bearing against the arm G, as seen in Figs. l and 2, and passing loosely through said pawl and through the arm G is a bolt H', provided upon one end with the nut h, while its other end is provided with a head 7L', between which and the face of the arm G is a spiral spring H2, the operation of this pawl being similar to that of the pawl F, above described, in connection with the ratchet A2.
I is a bolt passed through the lower end of the arm G and provided upon one end with a nut I', as seen in Fig. 2, and J and J are horizontally disposed plates overlapping each other and each provided with a longitudinal slot j, as seen best in Fig. 2, through which slots pass the bolt I, while the outer ends of the plates J J carry each a pin K projecting at right `angles therefrom, as seen in Figs. l, 2, and 3, and between these pins or projections K works the armor lever E, so -arran ged that 'at eaeh'inovementof the arm or lever E one or the other of said pins or projections will be engaged by said arm or lever. rIhese plates may be adjusted upon each other as may be desired to vary the distance between the pins or projections K so as to vary the length of stroke of the arm or lever G, and consequently the feed, so that the operator may readily cause the device to feed slow or fast, as may be desired.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrii'icing any of its advantages.
lVhat I claim as new isl. The combination with the main working barrel and the feed nut having a socket in which the end of said barrel fits, of a feed screw rod engaging said nut and extended into the barrel, the barrel and nut each being formed with a ratchet, a lever sleeved on said barrel, an independent lever sleeved on said nut, spring pawls carried by said levers and engaging said ratchets, means for causing said levers to move together, and means adjustable on one of the levers for engagement by.
the other for varying the throw thereof, substantially as speciiied.
The combination with the main working barrel and the feed nut having a socket in which the end of said `barrel fits, of a feed screw rod engaging said nut and extended into the barrel, the barrel and nut each being formed with a ratchet, a lever sleeved on said barrel, an independent lever sleeved on said nut, spring pawls carried by said levers and engaging said ratchets, means for causing said levers to move together, and means adjustable on one of the levers for engagement by the other for varying the throw thereof, said pawls being loosely mounted upon their supports and yieldingly held by a spring around such support, substantially as specified.
3. The combination with the nut and its ratchet and the 'arm sleeved on said nut, of the pawl carried by said arm, the horizontal plates provided with slots and overlapping each other and adjustable on said arm, and the lateral pins carried by the outer ends of said plates, substantially as specified.
4. The combination with the nut and the arm sleeved thereon and the ratchet movable with the nut, of the pawl on said arm, the bolt passed loosely through the pawl and through the arm and provided with a nut at one end, with a head at the other and a spring arranged between said head and the adjacent face of the arm, substantially a-s shown and described.
