STEAM-GENERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,290, dated November 26, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. RANTON, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in steam-generators of the class set forth in my previous patents, Nos. 484,339 and 489,689, issued, respectively, October 11, 1892, and January 10, 1893, and has for its object the production of a device which is particularly effective in operation; and it consists, essentially, in the general construction and arrangement of the component parts of the generator, all as hereinafter more particularly described, and pointed out in the claim.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figures 1 and 2 are respectively transverse and longitudinal sections of my improved generator, the water-containing shell being shown in elevation at Fig. 1.
The water-containing shell A of my invention is arranged in a substantially horizontal plane and is of suitable form, size, and construction. It is preferably circular in crosssection and may consist of separate sections suitably secured together, one of which is usually provided with a steam-dome a. The opposite ends of the shell A are closed by heads a a engaged by braces a and having their outer edges provided with inwardlyturned flanges secured to said shell by suitable fastening means a. The central portions of the heads a a are formed with openings a aligned with each other and provided with inwardly-extending flanges. The upper and lower edges of the openings a are substantially flat and their ends are formed rounding. Directly beneath the openings a are manholes a, which are closed by suitable plates a and fastening means a B is a fire-flue extending longitudinally within the shell A, and having its opposite ends arranged within the openings a and secured by suitable fastening means I) to the inwardly-extending flanges of said openings. The central portion of the flue B may be supported by suitable braces 19, although if the shell A and the flue B are comparatively short these braces may be dispensed with. The flue B is formed with substantially flat upper and lower Walls 6 b and rounding longitudinal sides Z9 Extending transversely across the fire-flue B are a series of upright watertubes B, having their opposite ends secured to the substantially flat upper and lower walls 1) 12 The fire-flue B is of sufficient crosssectional area to permit the passage of the heated products of combustion without preventing their combustion, and the water-tubes B are surrounded by said products of combustion and operate to heat the water passed therethrough.
- In my aforesaid patents, Nos. 484,339 and 489,689, I have shown generators provided with lengthwise fire-flues, and in the practical operation of these generators I have observed that the Water tends to remain unduly quiet beneath the lower flat wall of the fireflue, especially when the Water-level is low. Consequently the efficiency of generators of this construction is not as high as would be the case were there a more positive circulation beneath their fire-flues. In my present invention flues O extend lengthwise of the shell A beneath the opposite sides of the lower side 6 of the fire-flue B, and their opposite ends are secured to the end heads a 0. at opposite sides of the manholes a. The flues O are of considerably less cross-sectional area than the fire-flue B and are of suitable number, and, as they are on opposite sides of the manholes, entrance within the shell A is permitted for enabling securement of the water-tubes B. The flues O produce a circulation of the Water in the shell A beneath the fire-flue B, and greatly add to the efficiency of my generator.
D is the outer casing for the shell A, and, as
will be obvious to one skilled in the art, this casing is of any desirable form, size, and construction. It is preferably formed with a combustion-chamber '61 arranged beneath the front end of the shell A, a fire passage d extending from the chamber 01 beneath the opposite endof the shell A and provided with an upturned end 01 projecting above the rear ends of the flues C B,-and a draft-chamber (1 arranged in front of the opposite ends of said fines O B. The draft-chamber d is provided with a suitable outlet (1 and may be formed with a removable door (1, the construction of which it is unnecessary to herein further describe.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood upon reference to the foregoin g description and the accompanying drawings, and it will be obvious to one skilled in the art that it is particularly eiii'ective in operation.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a steam generator the combination of a water containing shell A of substantially circular cross section provided with substantially circular end heads ct a having openings ((1' in their central portions aligned with each other, and manholes (t arranged beneath the openings afla fire flue B within the shell A having its opposite ends secured in the openings a fiues C within the shell A extending lengthwise thereof beneath the fire flue B on opposite sides of the manholes a and having their opposite ends secured to the heads a a and an inclosing case A provided with a combustion chamber d beneath the front end of: the shell A, a fire passage (1 extending beneath the shell A from the combustion chamber to the opposite end of the shell A and formed with an upturned end (Z arranged at the rear of said shell A and projecting above the rear ends of the fiues I G, and a draft chamber (Z arranged in front of the opposite ends of the fines B O, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
