OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
wiNDojw-sAsH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,825, dated November 12, 1895. Application filed December 8, 1893. Serial No. 493,169. (No model.)
To all wh0m it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL KARL SCHWAB, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Sashes, of which the following is specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the class of window-sashes which are pivoted to swing in the window-frame in addition to the up-and-down sliding movement in the frame; and my invention consists of certain novel features in construction which will first be described in connection with the ac companying drawings and afterward particularly pointed out in the annexed claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure I represents a front elevation of a window-frame having my improved window-sash supported therein. Fig. II is a front elevation showing the upper sash raised and swung open and the retaining-strips of the lower sash withdrawn. Fig. III is a front elevation showing both sashes raised and swung open. Fig. IV is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 4 4, Fig. III. Fig. V is a detail sectional view showing the withdrawable retaining-strips in their normal position. Fig. V1 is a detail sectional View showing the withdrawable retaining-strips as withdrawn and the Windowsashes in position to be opened or tilted.
In said drawings, A represents a windowframe having a lower window-sash B and an upper window-sash C. These window-sashes are each provided with the upper and lower cross-pieces D E, and on their vertical side rails are mounted the withdrawable retaining-strips or metal plates F, having horizontal slots f, through which extend pins G for securing the plates to the side frames.
The pieces F may be provided with any suitable handle or handles, such as ribs S, ex-
. tending the whole length of the strips at their inner edges, and are turned over at their upper ends, as shown, forming right-angled portions F, which rest on top of the windowsashes and project over the tops of the cordstiles when they are projected, and thus materially assist in rendering the sashes airtight.
- H and J are the cord-stiles operating in the customary ways in the windowframe A.
There are two cord-stiles H and two cordstiles J, the lower sash B being pivotally supported between the stiles H by means of the central pivot-pins K, while the upper sash C is pivotally supported between the stiles J by means of the central pivot-pins K.
The cord-stiles II and J are of equal width with the window-sashes, and spaces are left between the cord-stiles and the window-frame to provide vertical channels between the cordstiles and the window-frame, into which the retaining-strips project.
M are parts or extensions hinged to the stiles J at L, which enable the raising of the uppersash much higher by being folded over into the position shown in Figs. II, III, and IV. When the upper sash is closed, as in Fig. I, the parts M rest in the vertical ways in the window-frame.
It will be observed that when the metal retaining-strips F are in the position shown in Fig. I,they will engage the window-frame and hold the sashes and allow them to move only vertically, but when the strips are withdrawn, as shown in Fig. II, (lower sash,) the edges of the strips will be even with the edges of the sashes, and the sashes can be rotated on their pivots, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination of a window frame, the cord stiles H and J working in the window frame and leaving spaces to form vertical channels between them and the retaining strips of the window frame, and the window sashes pivoted to the cord stiles II and J and adapted to slide vertically with them or swing between them, provided with the withdrawable retaining strips F attached to the faces of the sashes and adapted to project into the channels between the faces of the stiles and the window frame and formed with transverse slots f and longitudinal handle-ribs S extending the whole length of the strips along their inner edge, and the pins G engaging in the slots f and securing the strips F to the vertical parts of the window sashes, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the window frame, the cord stiles H and J working in the window frame leaving vertical channels between them, the window sashes pivoted to the stiles to project over the tops of the cord stiles, and 10 II and J, said stiles being of the same length suitable means for securing the retaining as the Window sashes, the withdrawable restrips to the Window sashes, substantially as taining strips I mounted on the faces of the set forth.
sashes in )osition to )roeet into the ehan- T i i T nels betwe en the stiles anc l window frame and 1 AUL BARL 50 formed with handle-ribs S extending the Whole \Vitnesses length of the strips, and right-angled portions M. V. BIDGOOD F resting on top of the sashes and adapted L. OOLSEY.
