IMPROVEMENT lN HEATlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,938, dated May 22, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEo. RODNEY MOORE, of the city of Lyons, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have inven ted a new and useful Im pro vementin Fire-Chambers for Burning Coal; and I do hereby declare the followingis a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is toincrease the facilities for managing coal-tires, first, by an arrangement for perpetuating them and, second, more convenient arrangements than ordinary for kindling them; and, third, affording convenient access to the tire at the lower part of the fire-chamber for toasting or other purposes.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ordinary cylinder-stove with my improvements included. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
H H is a part of the fire-chamber, shelving inwardly, and terminating at a proper height above the grate I to afford room upon the grate for as much ashes and cinders as it may be de sirable to empty out at any one time.
The operation is as follows: When the fire is first built the burning of the coal immediately upon the grate produces, by heat and smoke, acementingeftect upon the m ass above it, so that after the fire is well started scarcely any of the coal above H H will fall to the grate until it is consumed nearly to ashes and cinders. Consequently, at any time the operator wishes to do so, he can, by means of the rod F, pulling it out, tip the grate, as shown by dotted lines, and clear it by itself without disturbing the fire above it upon H H, and thus may the fire be kept clean and continued perpetually.
The second item considered provides a more convenient place than ordinary in cylinderstoves for kindling the fire.
D is a door placed between the shelving part of the fire-chamber H H and the grate I, and closing the recess formed and existing between them. Let this door D be opened and kindling placed in the-said recess upon the grate I and lighted, and thedoor closed again, and the work is done, as itreceives its draft from below. 1) is opened by 'nilliiig out the top at K, and turns upon a hinge, L.
G is the ash'pit; P, the space between H H and the grate, showing what portion can be emptied out at any time; J, the unburned and burning coal, which will be sustained in a mass by H H. B is the main cylinder of the stove; E, the smoke-flue; A, the door for coal; O, mica window.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The construction of a fire-chamber with a part, H, shelving inwardly and terminating at any desired distance above the grate I, for the purpose and in the manner herein set forth.
2. The recess or chamber between the fire J, the plate H, and door D, as and for the purposes described.
GEO. R. M'OORE.
