T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BRITTON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Boone, in the county of Boone and State of Iowa, have invented an Improved Diaphragm for Locomotive-Boilers, of which the following is a speciiication.
The object of this invention is to provide a device for accurately controlling the drafts through the boiler-nues and to prevent the accumulation of ashes, dac., immediately in front of the lower boiler-fines.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of a series of dampers and draft-controlling devices in the front end of the locomotive-cylinder, in advance of the boiler, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which* Figure I is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the front end of a locomotive-cylinder, showing part of the boiler and the draftcontrolling devices. Figi 2 is a transverse sectional view through the line :n x of Fig. l.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
the reference-letter A is used to indicate the locomotive-cylinder; A2, the smoke-box at the front end thereof.
B indicates the locomotiveboiler, of the ordinary construction.
C indicates the steam pipe, leading' forwardly above the boiler and downwardly in front of the boiler, and C2 indicates the exhaust-pipe to discharge upwardly toward the smoke-stack, all of the parts mentioned being of the ordinary construction now in general use, and a further description of their functions is deemed unnecessary.
D indicates a deiiector-plate leading from a point above the end of the boiler forwardly and downwardly, with a damper D2 hinged to its end and adapted to be operated from the exterior of the cylinder by the lever D3.
F indicates a diaphragm extending from the deiiector-plate D, at a point a slight dis tance in advance of the boiler, straight downl Wardly to a point near the bottom of the boiler, anda damper F2 is hinged thereto to close the remaining spaces in front of the boiler when extended straight downwardly. This damper may also be operated from the exterior of the cylinder by means of a lever F3.
The upper section of the diaphragm is provided with a plurality of vertical slots H and the lower half with vertical rows of perforations H2, out of alignment with the slots.
.I indicates a plate slidingly mounted in the rear face of the diaphragm in the tracks J2 and provided with vertical slots J 3, arranged to coincide with the rows of perforations H2 6o and when moved upwardly over the upper part of the diaphragm to close the slots H.
I have provided means for operating the plate J synchronously with the damper F, so as to close the upper slots in the diaphragm 6 5 when the damper at its bottom is open, and
vice versa, by the same lever, as follows: K indicates an integral lug on the damper F, and K2 is a like integral lug on the plate J, and K3 is a rod pivoted to said lugs. A portion 7o of the draft is permitted to pass through the central perforations in the diaphragm at all times, and the fire in combustion-chamber of the locomotive may be made to burn better toward the front ofthe chamber by closing 7 5 the damper and lowering the slide J, thus permitting the greater part of the products of combustion to pass through the upper boiler-hues, and if it is desired to make the fire burn better in the rear of the combus- 8o tion-chamber the dampers are arranged so that the greater part of the products of combu stion will pass through the lower flues, and this may be accomplished by the movement of a single lever. A 8 5 N indicates a metal plate secured to the bottom of the cylinder and inclined upwardly from lower edge of the front end of the boiler to a point directly beneath the damper D2 at the end of the deflector D, so that at this point 9o the passage to the stack may be contracted or diminished and so that ashes cannotbecome lodged in the bottom of the cylinder close to the lower boiler-fines, as they will all be carried by the draft over the inclined plate to a point beyond the end of the plate and cannot become backed up into the lower boiler-hues.
By the arrangement of the deflector D, the damper D2, and the inclined plate N the rco draft through all of the boiler-hues may be regulated and the ashes prevented from stopping up the lower flues, and by the construction and arrangement of the 'diaphragm and the damper and slide the relative amount of draft passing through any section of boilerflue may be readily and quickly controlled.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States therefor, is
l. The combination with a locomotive boiler and cylinder, of a flat metal plate ex tending from the lower end of the boiler forwardly and upwardly and a diaphragm located in advance of the boiler above said plate and having two or more horizontal draft passages therein and means for opening and closing said draft passages, for the purposes stated.
2. The combination with a locomotive boiler and cylinder, of a fiat metal plate eX- tending from the lower end of the boiler forwardly and upwardly, a deflector plate extending from the top of the boiler downwardly and forwardly, a damper on the lower end of the deflector, a diaphragm located in advance of the boilerand having two or more horizontal draft passages therein and means for opening and closing said draft passages, for the purposes stated.
The combination with a locomotive boiler and cylinder, of a diaphragm located in the cylinder in advance of the boiler having a series of vertical slots in the upper portion, a series of rows of perforations in its central portion out of alignment with the said slots a vertically sliding plate mounted on said diaphragm slotted to coincide with the rows of perforations, a damper hinged to the lower end of the diaphragm, a rod pivoted to the damper and to said sliding plate and means for operatin g the damper from the eX- terior of the cylinder, for the purposes stated.

The combination with a locomotive boiler and cylinder of a diaphragm located in the cylinder in advance of the boiler having a series of vertical slots in its upper portion, a series of rows of perforations in its central portion out of alignment with the said slots, a vertically sliding plate mounted on said diaphragm slotted to coincide with the rows of perforations, a damper hinged to the lower end of the diaphragm, a rod pivoted to the damper and to said sliding plate and means for operating the damper from the exterior of the cylinder and a deiiector plate leading from the top of the boiler forwardly and downwardly as shown, a damper hinged to its forward end and means for operating said damper from the exterior of the cylinder, for the purposes stated.
5. The combination with a locomotive boiler and cylinder, of a diaphragm located in the cylinder in advance of the boiler having a series of vertical slots in the upper portion, a series of rows of perforations in its central portion out of alignment with the said slots, avertically sliding plate mounted on said diaphragm slotted to coincide with the rows of perforations, a damper hinged to the lower end of the diaphragm, a rod pivoted to the damper and to said sliding plate and means for operating the damper 'from the exterior of the cylinder and a deiector plate leading from the top of the boiler forwardly and downwardly as shown, a damper hinged to its forward end and means for operating said damper from the exterior of the cylinder, and a flat metal plate leading from the bottom of the boiler upwardly and forwardly,.
all arranged and combined substantially as and for the purposes stated.
