Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FEED STARR, or crIIoAeo, ILLINOIS.
COMPOUND IMPLEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,164, dated November 5, 1895.
Application led September 13, 1894. Serial No. 522,926. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED STARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compound Implements; and-I do hereby declare the following to be ah full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention has reference to tools or implements designed especially for the use and convenience of cycle-riders, equestrians, tourists, and the like.
It has for its object to provide a compound instrument or tool combining in one simple, compact, convenient structure several useful functions.
The device is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and described and claimed in the following specification.
It consists of a spring-steel clip for holding the legs of the trousers wrapped close in atv the ankles to prevent them from being caught or tangled in the treadles, chains, or other part of the bicycle'or other velocipede, or, in the case of an equestrian, to keep the trousers from riding up the legs and to prevent them from being caught in the stirrup-straps, said clip being constructed and adapted to perform the additional functions of a screw' driver and a duplex wrench, all as more fully hereinafter set forth and explained.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective viewv of the foot and a portion of the leg of a cycle rider,l illustrating the manner of holding in the trousers and applying the clip. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the combined clip, screwdriver, and wrench.
Referring to Fig. 2, a, indicates an elastic clip which is preferably clamped or struck up out of a single piece of spring-steel having the proper temper to secure the desired spring action. The ends of the two arms of the clip are flared or turned outwardly, as at l?, to e11- able the device to be easily pushed over the edges of the folded trousers. .I ust back of the ends b the armsof the clip are bent inwardly toward each other, so as to provide grippingpoints c, and so as to leave below said points in the body of the clip an enlarged space h for the accommodation of the seams or facing of the lower edge of the trousers. One arm of the clip (it may be either arm) is provided with a disk-like enlargement e and a rightangular projecting piece or point g. In the periphery of the disk-like enlargement e are formed a plurality of radial notches f of different sizes, said notches constituting rigidj aw wrenches for screwing up nuts of various sizes. The projection g stands out radially from the disk-like enlargement, preferably at a right angle to the arms of the clip. Its end is beveled or inclined, as shown, and it constitutes a convenient screwdriver, of which the arms of the clip compose the handle when in use.
The manner of applying the device for the purpose of holding the trousers is illustrated in Fig. l, where the arm of the clip having the enlargementv is placed on the inside, so as to be concealed from view, though, of course, it may be placed on the o utside. In practice the compression of the opposite arm of the clip will press the cloth of the trousers into the radial notches in the disk-like enlargement, thereby preventing the disarrangement of the folds in the trousers, as well as holding the clip in place and preventing it from working around, so as to release the trousers.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isV
As a new article of manufacture, a tool or implement designed especially for the use of vcycle riders, the same consisting of the elastic FRED STARR.
