NITED STATES PATENT Fries,
WILLIAM G. ROSS, or LAURENS, SOUTH CAROLINA.
DEVICE FOR LOWERING PIPES IN BORED WELLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,024, dated October 29, 1895. Application filed September 5, 1896. Serial No. 561,586- (No model.)
To atZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. Rose, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Laurens, in the county of Laurens and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Devices for Lowering Pipes in Bored Wells 3 and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is an elevation, partly in section, showing invention as in use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device, and Figs. 3 and A are detail views showing the key and its connection with the jointed link or toggle.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and efficient device of novel character for lowering earthern or other pipe into wells; and the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, andj pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letters A and B designate the two principal members of the device, being twosimilar bars, which cross each other intermediate of their ends and which are pivoted together at the point of crossing. Connecting the upper end portions of the said bars is a jointed link or toggle G.
D is a key, which has a through-slot d at its upper portion, which embraces and is pivoted to the joint of the link or toggle O. E is an operating-cord, which is attached to the upper end of the said key.
F is a yoke, which is secured at its lower end to the pivot a, which connects the two members A and B. G is a second operating-cord, which is attached to the upper portion of the said yoke and which is provided at suitable intervals with rings g or other devices, by means of which the rope may be held.
The lower portion of the key D is split or forked, as seen at H, and the armsof the fork are spread laterally from each other, being designed to take a bearing in the upper crotch of the members A and B, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. The lower end of each of said members is turned outward in a lateral direction to form a toe a.
The operation of the device is as follows: The lower section or sectionsZ of the pipe to be lowered are supported upon the toes a in the manner shown in Fig 1 and are lowered by the rope G to the desired depth and to the first ring g. A rod or stick is then passed throughsuch ringto holdthe section or sections until another section is built up, when such rod is removed and the sections are lowered to the next ring. This operation is repeatediuntil the bottom of the well is reached.
The cord E is then pulled, which bows the link or toggle O and causes the lower portions of the members A and B to approach each other and releases the toes from the lower section. Said section now rests on the bottom of the well, and the device is drawn up to the top and out.
The pivot ais removable, and the members may be pivoted at different vertical points to provide for pipes of different diameters.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device for lowering pipe into wells, consisting essentially of the two principal members A and B, .which are two similar bars which cross each other intermediate of their ends, and are pivoted together at the point of crossing, each of said members having its lower endformed with a support for a pipe section, a jointed link or toggle connecting the upper end portions of the said members, a key loosely connected at its upper portion to the joint of said link or toggle and having its lower end formed to take a bearing in the upper crotch of the members A and B, the yoke secured to the pivot which connects said members, and means for operating said yoke and key, substantially as specified.
2. The device for the purpose described, said device consisting of the two members A and B which cross each other intermediate of their ends and which are adj ustably pivoted ICO together, said members having the toes at a series of ringsor the like, substantially as their lower ends, the jointed link or toggle specified. [O which connects the upper end portions of the In testimony whereof I affix my signature said members, the key slotted to receive the in presence of two witnesses.
joint of said link or toggle and pivoted W. G. ROSS. thereto, said key being forked at its lower Witnesses: end, the cord connected to said key, the yoke JNO. P. TUCKER,
and the rope connected thereto, and having B. E. MARTIN.
