Description

UNITED sTETEs PATENT oEEIcE.
WM. M. GOODING, OF NEWARK, NEV JERSY.
WROUG'HT-NAIL MACHINERY.
`Specification of Letters Patent No. 5,489, dated March 28, 1848.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. GooDING, of the city of Newark, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Machinery for the Manufacture of the Article Technically Termed VVrought-Nails and that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the drawings and model which accompany this specitcation and make part thereof.
Square wire of the size necessary for the intended nail is drawn into the machine by the rollers A, B, Figure l, the rollers by means of indentations of the requisite form and shape, compress a portion of the wire (equidistant the length of a nail) so as to form two of the four sides of the point of the nail. Fig. 5, represents a portion of the compressed wire a as it appears on one side, b the other side. The wire with these compressions, is at the same time, and by the same movement passed forward until the end c. Fig. 5, projects suiiiciently beyond the face of the holding dies C D gures to be pressed into a head by the punch rod E, Fig. l.
The compressed portion of the wire is thus placed under a pair of shears, the p0- sition of which is shown by F, Fig. l, and their construction by Figs. 2, 3 and 4c.
P, Q, Fig. 3, have hardened steel edges R, S, these being the cutters. P, Q., when bolted together o'rm T, U, Fig. 2, in which there is a space between the cutting edges shaped to lit the top of the block V, Fig. 2, which shape is shown by Fig. 4.
The compressed wire lying on the top of the block V, Fig. 2, has those portions shown by 0, p, Fig. 6, cut off by a downward motion of T, U, Fig. 2, this motion is given by a lever and cam, G, H, Fig. l.
The improvements which I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, are these:
Combining die rollers A, B, Fig. 1, with the cutters F, and these with the holding dies C, D, and header E, constructed and operating substantially as described above.
