Application filed December 6 1893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS HALLOCK NASH, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Norwalk, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ater-Meters, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to nutatingpiston water-meters; and it consists of certain novel parts and combination of parts particularly pointed out in the claims concluding this specification.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section on the line 1 1, Fig. 2, through a meter embodying my present invention; and Fig. 2 is a top View of the measuring-chamber, the upper head-plate of the case being removed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the piston, and Fig. 4 is a top view of the bottom plate of the lower measuring-chamber.
The following is a description of the structure shown in the drawings.
Referring to Fig. 1, A is the inlet-spud, and B the outlet-spud; G is the upper head-plate of the case, and D the lower head-plate. E E is the measuring-chamber divided by the partit on H into two separate chambers. The piston is provided with two flat disks J and J parallel to each other. The disk J operates in the upper measuring-chamber F and disk J operates in the lower 1neasuring-chamher G.
K is the diaphragm in the lower measuringchamber, and K is the diaphragm in the upper measuring-chamber. Both pistons are slit in the ordinary way to straddle their respective diaphragms, as shown in Fig. 3.
L is the inlet-port, and M the outlet-port, of the lower chamber, while 0 is the outlet-port, and N the inlet-port, of the upper chamber.
T is a pin projecting from the piston, making connection with the spindle of the registering mechanism.
The operation is as follows: Water is ad- N and L into the upper and lower chambers on opposite sides, and being metered passes out of the outlet-ports N and O to the outletspud 13.
Among the advantages of the form of piston shown is the fact that it may be cheaply constructed and that the partition H between Serial No. 492,905. (No model.)
the chambers furnishes a broad bearing for the ballot the piston.
The feature of a broad bearing wider at the ball than it is at the spherical surface of the case is not necessarily dependent upon the employment of fiat disks, as the same may obviously be obtained witha cone or cones provided their seats do not form too small an angle with each other.
The partition H is made in two halves, between Which are clamped the diaphragms K and K.
In the foregoing specification I have referred to some of the modifications which might be adopted in practicing my invention; but I have not endeavored to specify all the modifications which might be employed, the object of this specification being to instruct persons skilled in the art to which my invention relates to make and use the same in the form at present preferred by me; but it will be understood that mention by me of some of the modifications is not intended to exclude others not referred to, but which are within the spirit and scope of my invention.
In the claims the omission of an element or the omission of reference to the detail features of the elements mentioned is intended to be a formal declaration of the fact that the omitted elements or features are not essential to the inventions therein severally covered.
What I claim isv 1. In a nutating piston water meter, the combination of apiston provided with a plurality of disks and a ball bearing combined with a plurality of measuring chambers and a partition between said chambers broader at the ball of the piston than it is at the case walls, furnishing a seat or guide for said ball.
2. In a nutating piston water meter, the combination of a piston provided with a plurality of flat disks and a ball bearing combined with a plurality of measuring chambers and a partition between said chambers broader at the ball of the piston than it is at the case walls, furnishing a seat or guide for said ball.
