Be it known th'at I, GEORGE E. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwood, in the county of Lucas and State of Iowa, haveinventedanewand usefulPumpkin-Seed Planter, of which the following is a specifica tion.
This invention relates to planters, and more especially to an attachment designed for use in connection with a corn-dropping machine for depositing pumpkin-seed in the same hills with and at the same time of the planting of the corn.
The object of the invention is the construction of an attachment which can be quickly applied to any of the usual forms of cornplanters and which can be adjusted so as to be driven by the same mechanism provided for actuating the seed-dropping slides of the planter to which the attachment is applied.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the nature of the invention is unfolded in the following description, reference being had to the drawings hereto attached, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a cornplanter, showing the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the planting attachment. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the drill or grain-spout, showing it applied. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of the grainspout.
The planter herein shown is illustrative of the type with which the attachment is designed for use and may be of any desired form, and comprises the seed-box 1 and ground-wheel 2, carrying a sprocket-Wheel for actuating the seed-dropping mechanism by means of the sprocket-chain 3, all of which parts are of well-known construction and arrangement and need no further description.
The attachment comprises, essentially, a hopper 4, which in practice will be constructed of sheet-steel and in such a manner that the seed will gravitate to a discharge-opening in the bottom. l The drill or grainjspout 5 is constructed of sheet metal, preferably steel, and is shaped into the required'form'from a single blank, the side portions 6 extending vertically in parallel relation and having their upper ends bent outwardly at about right angles and secured in any desired manner to the bottom side of the hopper 4. An intermediate portion 7 curves forwardly and upwardly, and has its upper end 8 extending vertically and secured to the front side of the hopper, and an offset portion 9 is located intermediate of the parts 7 and 8 and extends beneath the front portion of the hopper-bottom, so as to admit of the curved portion 7 fitting closely against the peripheral surface of the seed-distributing wheel l0.
A shaft 1l extends transversely through the side portions 6 of the drill or grain-spout and is journaled in bearings 12, attached to the outer sides of the parts 6, and this shaft forms a support for the seed-distributing wheel lO, which is mounted thereon in such a manner that the shaft and seed-wheel revolve together. A sprocket-wheel 13 is adj ustably mounted upon the shaft 11, so thatits position can be changed to correspond with the relative position of the sprocket-chain 3, by means of which the said sprocket-wheel 13 is driven so as to operate the seed-distributing wheel 10. A binding-screw 14 passes through a hub portion of the. sprocket-wheel 13 and serves as a means to secure the said sprocket-wheel adj-ustably upon the shaft 11.
The seeddistributing wheel 10 is formed in its edge with one or more pockets 15, which are adapted to receive the seed from the hopper 4 and deposit the same in the drill or grain-spout, and by means of which the seed is conveyed to the hill or furrow.
The hopper is designed to be attached to the seed-box 1 in any convenient manner, and is provided on its front side with strap-irons 16 for the reception of fastenings by means of which the desired result is attained. When in proper position the attachment is actuated by the same mechanism provided for operating the corn-planting devices, and by a proper proportioning of the parts the pumpkin-seed placed in the hopper 4 can be dropped in every third, fourth, or other hill of corn, whichever may be desired, as will be readily understood.
The invention is designed for use in connection with the various forms of corn-planters placed upon the market, and in adapting the same for a particular make or style of machine it is to be understood that changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle orsaerifieing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a planter, the combination with the hopper, a vertically-disposed seed-distributing wheel, and a shaft for receiving and transmitting power to the said seed-distributing wheel, of a drill formed of a single blank of sheet metal and comprising side portions which extend along the sides of the said Wheel and have theirupperends bent outwardly and secured to the hopper, said side portions providing bearings for the aforesaid shaft, and an intermediate portion curving forwardly and upwardly in front of the forward portion of the said seed-distributing wheel and attaehed at its upper end to the hopper, substantially as set forth.
