in the county of Vermillion and State of Indi ana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Telegraph, Telephone, and Electric Pole Climbers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a ..full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specificanon.

This invention pertains to safety devices for telegraph, telephone, and electric pole climbers; and the object of the same is to provide abelt or girdle for encircling the lineman, which is connected to a device adj ustable vertically upon the post as the lineman ascends or descends, thus obviating all danger of falling while manipulating the wires or performing other work in connection therewith.

The invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view showing my device in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same detached. 1

A designates a pole, and B the binding-girdle thereon, the same being formed, preferably, of wire, which completely encircles the pole with the ends overlapped, so as to extend to substantially opposite sides of the post, where they are looped, as indicated at C. A

belt D, having the adjustable loops E at its ends, is secured to the loops of the said girdle by snap-hooks F, the latter being confined in the loops E. The outer side of the belt is provided with hook G for engaging the apparel of the lineman, so as to hold the belt in proper position upon him. Loops H are arranged on opposite sides of the girdle B, through which the lineman projects his arms, thus raising or lowering the girdle upon the pole as he ascends or descends.

In operation the device described is adjusted to the pole, and the lineman assumes his position between the belt and the girdle, with his arms projected between the loops, as described. He then ascends by means of the usual pole-climbing devices, and when at the desired height, by leaning outwardly against the belt, the girdle is drawn at its ends, so as to tightly clutch the pole and prevent vertical displacement. The operator is thus securely braced and at liberty to lean outward at will for the manipulation of the wires or performing other work incident to stringing and repairing the same. .The necessity of wrapping the legs about the pole as now ordinarily done is avoided, thus atfording freer movement of the body for the work at hand.

The device also guards against falling when climbing up or down the pole, as a sudden slip of the operator will cause the girdle to tighten about the pole and thus securely hold him until a firm footing can be made.

If a pole breaks with the lineman upon it, the device enables him to gain the upper side while falling, thereby greatly lessening the danger of being injured in the fall.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A pole climbing device comprising a girdle of wire or its equivalent encircling the pole, and a belt connected at its ends to the ends of the wire, wherebywhen the belt is drawn outward by the operator the wire will be contracted about the post so as to tightly grasp the same, substantially as shown and described.

2. A device of the character described comprising the girdle, the belt connected thereto,
