CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,068, dated October 15, 1895.
Application filed July 30, 1895. Serial No. 557,578- (No model.)

Be it known that I, ISAAC KLING, of Louis ville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form .part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement in carcouplings of the Janney type; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts set forth in the claims, and described in detail as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings by letters of refer ence.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the coupler and the pin-lifting devices. Fig. 2 is a central horizontal section through the coupler. Fig. 3 is a vertical central sectional view. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are detail vertical sectional views illustrating the operation of the parts in looking the swinging jaw. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective of the upper part of the swinging jaw; Fig. 8, a perspective View of the pin, enlarged. Fig. 9 is an enlarged View of the pin-lifting devices. Fig. 10 is a detail perspective view of the same.
The draw-bar A is of the ordinary twin-jaw construction, with the exceptions hereinafter specifically referred to. Onthe front and inner side of the lower ear act the draw-bar is a projecting cam B, which inclines upwardly from front to rear or bottom to top, as shown, and on the top car a is a like cam B. The tops of these cams are flattened, as at B, for the purpose hereinafter described.
The swinging jaw C is of the ordinary construction with the exceptions hereinafter referred to, and the bottom edge a of the lower locking member 0 of the jaw rides up on cam B when the jaw closes, thereby causing the jaw to rise vertically as it assumes a locked position. On the upper locking member 0 of the jaw is a lip 0 which rides up on the cam B when the jaw closes, just as c rides up on cam B. The locking-arm D of the jaw has its inner end substantially square, and in closing this square end first passes under the square shoulder f of the locking-pin F, (hereinafter described,) and as the arm passes under'the pin it rises (as the jaw is raised by cams B B) and thus lifts the pin and holds it raised until the arm passes the pin, whereupon the pin drops back to normal position and effectively locks the arm in the drawbar, holding the jaw locked until the pin is raised. The lifting of the pin is thus effected without the employment or action of any bevels on the arm or pin, as is evident, and by this construction when the jaw is closed the arm lifts the pin, but does not strike or press thereagainst in such a way as might bend or break it or bind it in the pin-holes, as might be the case if the lifting of the pin was effected by coacting opposed bevels on the arm and pin. It will be observed that the arm ceases to rise before it fully passes the pin, and when locked the jaw rests on the flattened part B of the cams. Therefore the jaw will not open automatically,and must be pushed or pulled open when the pin is raised, the object of the cams being to cause the jaw to rise and thus lift the link and to hold the jaw in coupling position afterit is pulled open.
Practically one of the cams B or B can be omitted; but by using both cams the jaw is held erect and kept from Wabbling, and the liability of its being rendered inoperative by breakage or wear is lessened.
The upper part of locking-pin F is preferably rectangular in cross-section and its lower part is triangular, a shoulder f being formed at the junction of the triangular and rectangular portions. When the pin is raised the triangular portion allows the end'of the locking-arm to move past the pin and under shoulderf, out before the arm swings entirely by the pin the jaw rides up on cams'BB', and thus the end of the arm catching under shoulderfraises the pin as it moves thereby until the arm passes clear of the pin, when the latter drops, and as the jaw remains elevated it cannot move back, for its arm then engages the rectangular; portion of the pin, which has dropped, so that not until the pin is lifted so as to raise shoulder f above the end of the locking-arm can the jaw be opened. The coupling-pin F may be provided with a pin f in its lower end below the draw-bar, to prevent its entire withdrawal from the drawbar, and it may be lifted when desired to release the jaw and uncouple by the following devices:
G is a link in the eye f in the top of pin F, said link having a tang g, which rests upon or in a recess in a ledge A on top of the draw-bar just behind the upper pin-opening when the pin is down. When the link G is lifted by the lifting devices hereinafter described, it will raise the pin, as is evident from the drawings.
The link G is connected by a link or chain I with the inner cranked end J of a rod J,
that is secured horizontally to the end of the car in any suitable manner, so that it can be readily rocked. The outer end of rod J passes through a keeper K, attached to the can, and i is provided with a crank-handle jafor turning it. This keeper has an inverted- L-shaped slot in it for the passage of rod J, and-the rod is either squared where it passes through the slot or provided with the tubular casting j, which is squared in cross-section on its outer surface, so as to work properly in keeper K, and is slipped on the rod and secured in place by bending the lips 7' on its front endaround the crank-arm of the rod, as shown in the drawin gs. This casting J enables me to use round metal rods for lifting the link. When the pin is down the rod J is turned, so that it lies in the lower end of the vertical limb in of said slot, but when it is desired to lift the pin the rod is turned so that it enters the upper horizontal portion k of the slot,.and when in this position the pin will be raised, so that the locking-arm will not engage therewith and the jaw can swing openfreely, and so longas the rod remains in this position the aw can-j not be locked. This device for holding the pin raised is simple and effective and very useful. Furthermore, as the pin F cannot be entirely withdrawn from the draw-bar and is connected to the rod J, which is permanently secured to the car, should the draw-bar break loose from its fastenings while coupled up to another draw-bar, or its head break oif, the
tang g of link G will then act as a lever on ledge A and cause pin F to be pulled up, so
that it would release the locking-jaw, thus latterby reason of the upward movement of the jaw in closing-substantially as described.

The combination of the draw bar having a cam B on its lower ear, substantiallyas described, with ';the swinging jaw pivoted to said draw bar andadapted to ride up on said cam in closing, and the shouldered locking pin F adapted to be liftedby thelocking arm of the jawas the jawcloses, substantially as described.
4L. The combination of the draw-bar, the swinging jaw, and the locking pin with the link as G having ,a tang as 9 attached to .the
upper end of said pin and the rod and connectionswith said link for raising and lowering the pin, substantiallyas described.
5. The combination of the draw-bar having a cam B, and the swinging jaw having a square-ended lockingarm; with the locking pin F having a triangular lower portion and rectangular upper portion, and a shoulder f at the junctionof said portions, and the devices for lifting and holding said pin raised substantially as described.
6. The combinationof thedraw-bar having cams B, B, .on its ears; and the swinging-jaw having a lip 0 with the locking pin F having shoulderf, the link G attached to the upper end of said pin, and the devices for raising and lowering said link and pin, substantially as described.
7. The combination with the draw-bar, a locking pin, the rod J having a cranked end connected to the pin, and a handle on its other end;,and the squared castingj fixed on the rod and adapted to engage the keeper; with the keeper K having an inverted L-shaped slot in which the casting j is engaged, substantially as described.
