FURNACE-DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,050, dated October 15, 1895.

To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, ERWIN W. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States of America, resid ing at Palisade, in the county of Eureka and State of Nevada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnace-Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a furnace-door of improved construction which can be readily attached to the door-frames now in use; and it consists in providing the ordinary door-frame with a swinging door having a section which is adapted to swing inward, the door also having a damper or plate for closing the opening at the lower end of the hinged section.
The invention further consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a front elevation of a furnace-door constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3, Fig.1, in the direction of the arrow, the hinged section being swung inward and the damper lowered; and Fig. 4 is a front view of the hinged section detached.
A designates the ordinary door frame or ring with which furnaces are provided, and this ring is provided with the 'usual projections which support the pintles a a of the hinges and with a staple a with which the latch engages for holding the door closed.
13 designates the door, which is provided with apertured ears I) I), through which the pintles a pass, and with a slot b for engage ment with the staple a. The upper part of the door B is provided at its inner end with a depending flange B from which project lugs B, said lugs having open-ended slots to receive pintles formed at the upper end of a section 0 to support said section, so that it may be swung inward, as hereinafter de scribed. The slot in the lugs B is closed by a block 19 which is held in place bya pin, as shown, and the pintles c of the section 0 extend between lugs formed on said section, an opening being provided between each pair of lugs to receive the lugs B hereinbefore referred to.
The section 0 has formed on its upper end a toothed segment 0 which is in mesh with a toothed segment D carried by a shaft D, journaled in lugs D, which project from the upper part of the door B. One end of the shaft D is flattened, as shown at d, for engagement with the bifurcated end of a shaft E, which is suitably journaled in bearings attached to the front of the furnace, and by this arrangement the shafts D and E can be disconnected in opening the door B, and when the door is closed connection is made, so that the shafts will turn in unison. The shaft E carries at its outer end a lever E, having a sliding dog of the usual type which engages with a toothed plate E attached to the front part of the furnace. It will be noted that when the shafts D and E are connected to each other and the lever E operated the hinged section 0 will be swung in and out by means of the segments D and C the outward movement of the section being limited by the side flanges thereof abutting against the front portion of the door.
F designates a latch which is pivoted to the lower part of the door B and is provided with an end that projects upward, so as to engage with the staple a and lock the door Bin a closed position. The opposite end of thelatch F may be of suitable weight to counterbalance the portion which engages the staple, and it may also be so constructed as to engage with a staple or projection on the furnace and hold the door B open. The lower part of the door Bis also provided with outwardly-projecting lugs g g, through which passes a bar carrying a damper-plate G, and said damper-plate when swung inward rests upon the door at the lower end of the opening therein, the inner end of the plate bearing against the hinged section 0, so as to cut off the opening at the lower end thereof. When the damper-plate is swung outward, as shown in Fig. 3, it provides an airinlet space. The draft may be further regulated by adjusting the inclination of the section 0 by means of the lever E, as hereinbefore mentioned.
When it is desired to feed fuel into the furnace, the hinged section (3 is swung inward by means of the lever and is held in such position by means of the dog engaging the toothed plate E. In case it should bedesired to open the door B, so as to provide an opening the full extent of the doorway, it can be accomplished by releasing the latch F from the staple, when the door and parts carried thereby can be swung outwardly upon its hinges. It will be noted that when the section 0 is swung inward the air will be defiected downward upon the fuel, so as to promote combustion, and that the section C and damper G coact to properly regulate the admission of air through the opening in the door. The damper G is provided with an apertured projection, so that it may be operated by means of a hook.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the ring or door frame A, a door B connected thereto, a section 0 hinged to the upper part of the door B so as to cover an opening therein, said section having a toothed segment, and a shaft D supported by the door B and carrying a toothed segment in engagement with the toothed segment on the section G, together with a shaft E having an operating lever and provided with means for engaging the shaft D when the door B is closed, substantially as shown.
2. In a furnace door, the combination with the ringA, of a door Bhinged to the ring and provided with an opening,a section 0 hinged 0 to the door at the upper part of the opening, said section having a toothed segment 0 a shaft D supported by the door and having a toothed segment attached thereto and in mesh with the toothed segment on the section 0; together with a shaft E supported by the furmace and having means for engagement with the shaft D when the door is closed, the shaft E carrying an operating lever E having a sliding dog for engagement with a toothed plate attached .to the furnace, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with the ring or door frame A, a door B hinged thereto and pro vided with an opening, a section 0 hinged to the upper part of the door and provided with a toothed segment, ashaft D supported by the door and carrying a toothed segment in engagement with the toothed segment on the section 0, the shaft D having a flattened end; together with a shaft E having an operating lever and provided with a bifurcated end for engagement with the flattened end of the shaft D when the door B is closed, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a furnace door, the combination with the ring or frame A, of a door B hinged thereto and having an opening, a depending section C hinged to the door so as swing inwardly, of
a damper G hinged to the lower part of the door, so as to swing outwardly substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
