GAR FENDER. A l No. 548,019. Patented Oct. 15,1895.
IN VEN TDH:
1 Eggs l Il I ANDREW IGRAHAM. PHUI'O'UTNWASHINGTDl, 0.6.
ALBERT J. Tl-IORNLEY, OF PAWTUOKET, ASSIGNOR TO THE CONSOLIDATED OAR FENDER COMPANY, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
CAR-FENDER?.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,019, dated October 15, 1895.
- Application flied Jun@ 26,1895. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. THORNLEY, of the city of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State'of Rhode Island, have 'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Fenders; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part xo of this specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in car-fenders of the nature described in United States Letters Patent No. 534,982, granted to me February 26, 1895.
x5 The invention relates particularly to the device for releasably supporting the fendersustaining lever.
The object of the invention is to so construct the sustaining-lever-supporting device that the lever may be locked in two positions.
Another object is -to so construct this supporting device that both locking-latches may be actuated by the same mechanism.
Another object of the invention is to so construct a supporting device of this nature that it may be used in combination with a removable sustaining-bar.
The invention consists in the combination with a fender-sustaining lever of a lockinglatch adapted to engage the lever when the lever vis in either the raised or depressed position.
The invention also consists in the oppositely-disposed latches and in the means for simultaneously actuating them.
The invention also consists in a supportingbracket having a slot open at the lower end between diverging lips and a double-latching device located to act in the slot.
The invention consists in such other novel features of construction and combination of parts as may hereinafter be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the supporting device removed from the car, the fender-sustaining lever being shown in two positions. Fig. 2 represents across-sectional View of the same.
Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
In carrying my invention into practice it sein n@l 554,116. (No model.)
has been my desire to positively lock the fender either in the depressed or in the raised position, as when the fender is in the depressed position a sudden shock to the same, by passing over an obstruction before reaching the object it is designed to catch, will throw the fender upward and may result in itsbeing caught in the elevated position at the time when it should be in the depressed 6o position.
In the drawings, 5 indicates a substantial casting in the nature of a bracket having the two depending arms 6 and 7, furnished with the diverging open lips 8 and 9, between which 65 access may be had to the slot 10 between the arms. In the arm 6 is'formed the vertical slot 1l at right angles with that marked 10, and in this slot 11 are pivoted the upwardlyextending latch 12, working into the slot 10, 7o and the bell-crank lever 13, having the latch 14 at its lower end and the step 15 at its upper end, this upper end extending through the slot 16 in the upper part of the arm 7. In the latch 14 is secured the pin 17, which en- 7 5 gages in the slot 18 in the latch 12, so that the movement of the lever 13 will actuate the latch 12. The horizon tal end of the bellcrank lever is normally supported by the spring-lifted button 19, Working in a socket 8o in the arm 7, the end 15 of this lever being depressible by a plunger or by an equivalent device.
The sustaining-lever 2O is the lever 2O of the patent above referred to, and is adapted to move freely in the slot 10. When in its normal position it is held down by the lower end of the latch 14:, but when it is released from this latch the weight ofthe fender throws it up to theposition indicated in dotted lines, 9o when the recovery of the latching mechanism will cause the upper end of the latch 12 to engage this lever and hold it in this position.
The dotted lines 21 show a modified construction Which is used when the fender is permanently fastened to the car, the connection formed by this between the arms 6 and 7 serving to strengthen the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters roo Patent-- 1. In a car-fender, the combination with a sustaining-lever, of a supporting device, including a latching device, consisting of separate oppositely-disposed and pivotally connected bolts and means for simultaneously actuating the same.
2. In a car-fender, the combination with a sustaining-lever, of a supporting device consisting of a bracket having two members separated at one position for the insertion of the sustaining-lever, and a duplex locking-device mounted to act on the lever between the inembers.
3. The combination with the bracket 5 having the arms 6 and 7, the arm 7 having the slot 1G, the arm 6 having the s101311, the latch 12 pivoted atthe lower end of the slot and hand.
ALBERT J. THORNLEY. Witnesses:
