SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 547,970, dated October 15, 1895.
Application filed December 19, 1885. Serial No. 186,218. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARVIN O. STONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Apparatus for Making Paper Tubes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 4
Figure 1 is a plan view of a mechanism embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side view of the essential parts. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the machine with the cutter detached. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the machine in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 shows the finished cone. Fig. 6 shows the former and a blank at the time of commencing the wrapping.
B is a table having a standard B F is a mandrel or former mounted in a bearing at c in the standard. The former is conical and provided with one or more slot-s f at the smaller end.
G is a wheel secured to the spindle and with which a belt 9 intermittingly engages. The belt is driven by the wheel H on the shaft I, receiving power through the band-' wheel L, said belt passing over an idler-wheel H on the opposite side of the former or mandrel. The belt g is intermittingly pressed against the wheel G at the will of the operator by means of the movable pulley J on the sliding bar J, which is operated by thetreadle J The operator sits in front and faces the small end of the former F, and while thelatter is stationary inserts a blank, as shown in Fig. 6, paste having been first applied on the edge d. Then the treadle J is depressed and the belt g is pushed against pulley G, whereupon the part F is rapidly rotated and the blank is coiled into a tube. The paper blank A is cut with the side edges a a, the curved top and bottom edges a a a projection or ear a and preferably a square corner 0 At K K there is a guide for the blank, K being astandard and K a flange or plate thereon, the guide being arranged to hold the blank at the side of the cutter and in or near the plane of its axis. At M there is a cutter adapted to insure a proper shape for the upper or larger end of the paper cone. It is mounted on the spindle m and is rotated by the belt on, driven from the former or its spindle and engaging with the wheel m The knife is covered by the shield m At B there is an aperture in the table, through which the operative deposits the wrapped cones A (see Fig. 5) after they are withdrawn from therformer by the left hand.
In the lower part of Fig. 1 there is a conventional showing of a blank-holder, also seen at the right hand at Fig. 2, but asitdoes not relate to the present improvement it need not be illustrated nor described in detail.
I do not herein claim any of the matters presented in the claims in my other application, Serial No. 202,200, filed May 14, 1886. The claims herein relate to the devices for guiding the blanks to the mandrel and for cutting them to proper shape, I preferring to' claim in said other application, Serial No. 202,200, the features of novelty incident to the mandrel itself and to the mechanism for operating it therein shown.
What I claim is- 1. The combination of the power devices, the intermittingly revolving cone shaped mandrel or former having the smaller end thereof freely exposed, whereby it can be inclosed by the hand of an operator, and an intermittingly rotating knife in proximity to thelarger end of said former, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of an intermittingly revolving cone shaped mandrel, the revolving knife adjacent to the larger end of said mandrel, and the knife driving mechanism actuated from the spindle of the mandrel, substantially as set forth.
