that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in washing-machines; and its object is to provide animproved construction of the same by which clothes or other articles may be readily cleansed or washed and which shall also possess superior advantages with respect to efficiency inoperation.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of a washingmachine constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the upper part of'one of the legs, show ing the elastic buffers; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view showing the oscillating shafts, the oscillating rods, and the means for holding said rods in place.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the suds-box formed with a horizontal corrugated bottom 2, inclined corrugated ends 3, and corrugated sides 4, to which the bottom and ends are secured. The sudsbox is supported by four legs 5,provided at their upper ends with rubber or other elastic buffers 6. The sides 4 are provided with cleats 7, to which are secured cross-bars 8, and supported by the cleats are tops or covers 9. Secured to the upper edges of the sides 4 are slotted segmental castings 10. The'slots in' these segments are formed on a wave line, as seen in Fig. 1-that is to say, they are higher at the center than'at the ends.
The numeral 12 designates an oscillating shaft journaled in the sides 4 and formed with a series of diametric apertures 11, through which pass the reciprocating and oscillating rods 13, which pass through aper tures in a shaft 14, which reciprocates in the arc of a circle, and also oscillates on its axis. These rods are provided with a series of holes 15, with which engage pins 16, passing through corresponding holes in the shaft 14, by which means the said rods may be adjusted to suit the quantity of clothing in the suds-box. The outer ends of these pins are bent at an angle and their extremities bent into eyes 17, which engage with hooks 18, secured to the shaft to hold them in place.
The ends ofthe shaft 14 are provided with studs 19, on which are journaled rollers 19, which work in the slots in the segments, and the outer ends of the studs work in slots 20 in plates 21, secured to the inner sides of levers 23, pivoted to the lower portion of the sides of the suds-box. These levers are connected at their upper ends by means of a cross-bar 24.
The numerals 19 designate washers on the studs 19 at each end of the rollers 19.
The operation is as follows: The suds-box is supplied with the proper quantity of water i and the clothes placed therein and the tops or covers put on. By now actuating the levers the rollers 19 will work back and forth in the slots in the segments, rising and falling therein. This will cause the shaft 14 to be moved lengthwise of the machine in arcs of circles corresponding with the slotted. segments, and the rods will also move up and down, and, engaging with the clothes, will compress and rub the same over the corrugations in the suds-box, and thus effectually cleanse them. During this movement the studs of the shaft 14 will work up and down in the plates secured to the lovers.
