To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, ALBERT R. YOUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yountsville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in' Axle-Nut Wrenches for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to an appliance for removing axle-nuts of Vehicles and for holding them securely in their proper position on the wheel-hub while the operator applies lubricants to the spindle, that the nut may be started home at once by rotating the wh'eel when it is replaced without requiring the appliance to be adjusted by the hand to properly start the nut home, as has been necessary in the use of many previous appliances suggested heretofore; and `to this end my invention consists in the peculiar construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts, as set forth in the following description and claims. l
Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure l is a perspective view showing myinvention applied to the hub of a vehicle-wheel.

In the emhodiment of my invention I use a main frame 1, a pairof clamping-arms 2, mounted upon pivot-pins 3 in each end of the main frame, a pair of bent arm-Springs 4, mounted on the pivot-pins 3, and an aXle-nut cap 5, mounted centrally on the main frame.
The inner ends or fingers of the clamping- 'arms 2 are provided with rubber coverings 2' or other soft-material covering, which prevents scarring or marring of the paint as they grip between the spokes on opposite sides of the hub. The axle-nut cap 5 has a rectangular aperture 5', which receives the axle-nut of a vehicle when the arm-fingers are clamping the wheel, and is provided at its outer side with a rectangular shank 52, which fits a suitable aperture in the main frame, in which it is longitudinally movable. The inner ends of the pair of bent arm-Springs a normally rest upon the outer end or on the key-pin of the rectangular shank of the axle-nut cap 5 for holding the axle-nut in its proper position against the hub of the wheel while lubricating the axle. The arm-Springs 4 are mounted orf the pivot-pins 3 of the clamping-arms 2, with their outer ends pushing outwardly on the handles of said arms, which impels their inner ends or fiugers together, so as `to clamp and grip between the spokes of the wheel on oppositesides of its hub, which holds the appliance securely in its proper position. In using this appliance I have found it quite a convenience, as it not only removes the axlenut by the rotation of the wheel, but holds the axle-nut securely in its proper position against the wheel-hub while applying lubricants to.
- not claim my invention broadly; but what I do claim as peculiar to my invention is the provision of the longitudinally-self-adj usting nut-cap, which holds the aXle-nut securely in position on the hub and at the proper point therein to start the nut home by rotating the replaced wheel without being required to adjust the appliance in any way, as is necessary in other appliances which require the operator to perform what I term steering the appliance foi` starting the nut home.
It has further been found in the use of my appliance that the provision of suitable means for enabling the axle-nut cap to have a rotary movement on its shank in the main frameis unnecessary.
Having thus fully described my invention and set forth the operation and advantages thereof, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. A nut wrench for Vehicles, having a main frame, a pair of clamping arms mounted on, pivot pins in the ends of said frame, a pairof soft coverings mounted on the arm fingers which clamp between the spokes on opposite sides of the wheel-hub, in combination with a pair of bent arm Springs mounted on pivot pins in the ends of the main frame having their outer ends pushing outwardly on the handles of the arms and their inner ends press- IOO frame having their inner 'ends pressing inwardly on the rectangular shank of the nut Cap which holds the axle nut securely in its proper position in the wheel-hub, while applying lubrieants to the spindle, for starting the nut home by rotating the replaced wheel with out having to steer the appliance, and a self adjusting nut cap having a suitable aperture which receives the axle nut and areotangular shank at its rear side longitudinally movable in a suitable aperture in the main frame which receives the pressure of the inner ends of the bent arm Springs, all as and for the purposes set forth.
