To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, ERNST GESSNER, machine-builder,- of Aue, in the Kingdom of Saxony, German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cloth Shearing or Cropping Machines,(for which I have obtained Letters Patent in the following countries, namely: Germany, dated April 5, 1893, No. 71,718; Belgium, dated April 8, 1893, No. 104,221; France, dated April '10, 1893, No. 229,256, and England, dated April 20, 1893, No. 8,036,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to cloth shearing and cropping machines in which cutters on a revolving cylinder work against a stationary cutter, the fabric being drawn over a guide, so as to present its pile or nap to the action of the stationary and revolving cutters.

My invention consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, wherein the figure represents a vertical secping machine provided with my improvements.

0 is the cutting-cylinder, driven in any suitable manner (not shown) and provided with suitable cutters F, acting in combination with two stationary cutters or ledger-blades M and M, the cutter M being in the usual position below the cylinderC and the cutter M being above the cylinder. This relative arrangement of the cutters is, however, not essential, as they might be otherwise disposed with regard to the cylinder and more than two might be used with one cylinder. The cutters M M are fixed to their respective supporting-bars S S, placed the one behind and the other in front of the cylinder 0, and adj ustably secured by means of screws, the blades being opposite- 1y directed, so as to present their cutting-edges in the same direction with regard to the motion of the cylinder.

Adjustable beams or horses are used to hold the fabric up to the cutters. The lower beam consists of a plate A, fixed in a radial longitudinal groove in a shaft W provided with a oounterweighted lever-arm E and journaled in hangers R, which are fixed adjustably to the machine-frame by slot and screw 2*, so as to admit of adjusting the horse A in a radial direction to and from the cylinder 0, its adjustment in a tangential direction to the cylinder being effected by moving it about the shaft W as a center by means of a set-screw to. The horse A is shown in full lines in its ordinary position as held by the counterweight G against the screw u. The fabric passes in the direction of the arrow over the guide-roller W whereby the seamed ends (t. a, two piece ends stitched together) are turned downward so as to come against the edge of the horse A, which, being free to rock about shaft W yields to the pull of the cloth, as shown in dotted lines, carrying the cloth away from the cylinder, so avoiding injury to both, the Weight returning the horse to its original position after the seam has passed, the action being repeated each time the seam passes. The upper horse A is a bar extending across the machine and fixed to arms E, pivoted about shaft 0', which is threaded so as, in conjunction with tube 0, acting as a distance-piece, to apply tension to the bar A in the same way as a saw-blade is stretched. The ends of the shaft are journaled in eccentric bearings e, adjustable in brackets R, fixed to 8', so that by turning the eccentric bearings the horse A is adjusted in the radial direction, while its adjustment in the tangential direction to the cylinder 0 is eifected by the set-screw a. On the passage of the scam the action is the same as before described. It is to be observed that in neither case may the edge of the horse be in the line of centers of the cylinder G and the shaft about which the horse rocks.

I claim-- 1. In a shearing or cropping machine, the

combination of a cutting cylinder, a stationary cutter blade, adapted to act in conjunction therewith, and a beam or horse pivoted upon an axis parallel to said cylinder, as and for the purpose specified.

2.
