SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,914, dated September 10, 1895.

Zo aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. RUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrodsburg, in the county of Mercer and State of Kentuck have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements-in lever lifting-jacks; and its novelty and advantages will be fully understood from the following description and claims, when taken in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved lifting-jack. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section. Fig. 3 is a section on the line a: of Fig. 2. Fig. tie a perspective view of the clip removed from the hand-lever, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the lever for engaging the frontaxles of vehicles.
Referring by letter to said drawings, A indicates the base-block of my improved jack, which is provided adjacent to its bottom with a transverse aperture and adjacent to its top or upper edge with a curvilinear transverse slot at, and B indicates the uprights, which are arranged upon opposite sides of the block A and are connected thereto by bolts 17 b, which take through the transverse aperture and slot at of the block, respectively, so as to permit of the uprights being adjustably fixed in an inclined position, for a purpose presently described. The connection between the baseblock A and the uprights B is reinforced by the brace C, which is fixedly connected atone end to the block, as indicated by c, and is passed between the uprights B, and is provided at one end and at an intermediate point of its length with threads for the engagement of nuts (Z, which serve to secure thewashers or plates 6 against the uprights, as illustrated. This manner of connecting the brace O and the uprights B, as will be observed, will not interfere with the uprights being adjusted to an inclined position, inasmuch as when the uprights are tobe inclined the position of the nuts (1 and plates e on the brace may be readily changed to suit the changed position of the uprights.
The uprights B are provided at their upper ends with a handle D, which is secured between them, as shown, and at intermediate points of their length said uprights are fur- ,nishedwith aligned transverse apertures f. These apertures f are designed to receive the transversely-arranged bolts E and F, the latter of which is designed to serve as a fulcrum for the hand-lever G and connect the same to the uprights, as shown. Said hand-lever G is provided at intervals in its length with apertures g to receive the bolt F, so that the length of its weight portion may be increased or diminished to suit vehicle-axles of various sizes, and at its forward end said lever is provided with a clip H. (Better illustrated in Fig. 4..) This clip H serves to strengthen the forward end of the lever G, and it is provided on its under side with a lug 2', as shown, for the pivotal connection of the gravitating curvilinear toothed bar I, which .is designed to engage the bolt E, and the lever J, which is designed to engage the forward axle of a vehicle.
The lever J is preferably of loop form, as better shown in Fig. 5, so as to enable it to straddle the lug t' and bar I, and it is provided at its rear end with an upwardly-extending branch j, which is designed to bear against the under side of the clip H when a weight is imposed on theforward end of the lever. By reason of the said upwardly-extending branch fat the rear end of the lever J being adapted to bear against the under side of the clip H when a weight is imposed on the forward end of the lever, as just described, it will be observed that a material portion of the weight and strain is taken off the fulcrum-bolt of said lever J, and said fulcrum-bolt, which also serves for the connection of the rack I, is therefore not likely to break. As will also be observed, the rack I, being connected to the fulcrum'bolt of the lever J, will, when in engagement with the bolt E, support the said fulcrum-bolt and assist in preventing breakage of the same.
In using my improved jack it is firstnecessary to adjust the lever G and the bolt E so as to suit the elevation of the axle to be lifted, and when desired the uprights may be moved toand adj ustably fixed in an inclined position through the medium of the bolt 1), so as to bring the forward end of the lever G over the middle of the base-block A. When this has been done, it is simply necessary for the operator to grasp the cord L and raise the bar I out of engagement with the bolt E,and then raise the rear or power end of the lever G, so as to permit of the forward end being placed beneath the axle to be lifted, and then depress the rear end of the lever, so as to raise the forward end thereof and the axle thereon. As the rear end of the lever is depressed to raise the axle, the toothed bar I will move upwardly with the forward end of the lever, and when said lever is released said toothed bar will automatically engage the bolt E and hold the forward end of the lever and the weight thereon in the position to which they have been raised.
As is well known, the rear axles of vehicles are ordinarily higher than the forward axles thereof, and for this reason I have arranged the lever J on the under side of the lever G, as shown. This arrangement permits of the forward end of the lever G being placed in engagement with the rear high axle of a vehicle and the forward end of the lever J being placed in engagement with the forward low axle, and it will therefore be appreciated that when the jack is adjusted to suit the high rear axle of a vehicle it is not necessary to again adjust it to suit the forward low axle, which is an important advantage.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a lifting jack, the combination of an upright, bolts E, F, arranged in said upright, the hand lever fulcrumed at an intermediate point of its length on the bolt F, a lever J, arranged beneath the forward portion of the hand lever and fulcrumed at an intermediate point of its length ona bolt carried by a lug depending from the hand lever, said lever J extending in advance of the said hand lever and having the upwardly extending branch at its rear end adapted to bear against the under side of the hand lever and the toothed bar pivotally connected to the fulcrum bolt of the-lever J, and adapted to engage the bolt E, substantially as specified.
2. The lifting jack described comprising the base block having the slot a, the uprights arranged on opposite sides of said block, bolts 1), 17', taking through the uprights and the blocks, the brace connected to the base block and extending between the uprights and having threads 'atits end and at an intermediate point of its length, plates arranged on said brace and engaging the uprights, nuts engaging the threads of the brace and securing the plates in position, the bolts E, F, arranged in the uprights, the hand lever fulcrumed on the bolt F, and the toothed bar pivotally connected with the lever and adapted to engage the bolt E, all substantially as specified.
3. In a lifting jack, the combination of an upright, bolts E, F, arranged in said upright, the hand lever fulcrumed on the bolt F, the clip arranged on the forward end of the hand leverand having the depending lug, the curvilinear toothed bar pivotally connected by a transverse bolt with said lug and adapted to engage the bolt E, and the lever I, of loop form straddling the lug and the toothed bar and fulcrumed on the transverse connecting bolt of the toothed bar and having its rear end adapted to bear against the under side of the hand lever, substantially as specified.
