To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, REINHARD MANNES- MANN, a citizen of Germany, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tubular Poles for Telegraph and other Purposes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide IO a new and improved tubular pole for tele-' graph, telephone, and various other purposes which is seamless, weldless, elastic, possesses great strength with a reduced quantity of metal and diminishedweight in a structure of given size, and is very durable and a practicable substitute for wooden telegraph and other poles or posts.
The invention also has for its object to provide simple, efficient, and economical means for securing and supporting the pole or post in the ground and preventing its axial dis placement or movement, and to generally improve tubular poles or posts with a view to rendering them susceptible of practicable manufacture by simplified tube-making ma chinery, and to make them superior in practical use as supports for telegraph and telephone wires, or the wires of trolley systems, or for other purposes.
To accomplish these objects my invention consists, essentially, in a telegraph, or other pole or post, composed of a seamless tube of steel or other metal having its shell rolled integral with sections which successively de- 7 5 creasein diameter and thickness of tubes'hell from the base to the outeror opposite end thereof.
The invention also consists in a telegraph or other pole or post composed of a seamless tube of metal having its shell rolled integral with sections which successively decrease in diameter and thickness of tube-shell, each section of shell being of uniform thickness or having parallel sides from end to end 5 thereof. 1
The invention also consists in corrugate wings or plates hereinafter described in detail, which are secured to the pole or post within the ground, for the purpose of pre venting axial displacement or movement of the pole or post.

The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a seamless elastic tubular pole or post constructed in accordance with my invention andsecured on a hollow base buried in the Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a pole or post supportedin the ground and provided with the improved wing-plates for preventingaxial displacement or movement of the pole or post. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken on the line- 4 4, Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the wing'plate.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein it will be observed that the improved pole or post is composed of a tube shell which is formed integral with sections 1, 3, and 5, which successively decrease in diameter and thickness of tube-shell from the base of the post or pole to the upper or outer end thereof. The number ofsections can be increased to any desired extent, according to the length or height of the pole or post; desired. The lower extremity of the tube-shell 1 is thickened, as at 6, and this thickened portion is provided with a laterally-projecting flange 7, adapted to be bolted or otherwise rigidly secured to the flattened top Wall 8 of the hollow metallic base 9 of pyramidal form. The hollow metallic base is designed to be buried in the earth, so that the tube-shell section 1 will be arranged in the ground nearly the full length of such section, whereby a very strong and substantial support of the pole or post is secured.
The improved pole or post is composed of a seamless, weldless, elastic tube, of steel or other metal, and in its production it is made by subjecting a hot SOliCl bar. or block of steel or other metal to the rolling action of 5 tapering rolls, which tend to advance and rotate the metal bar or block, so that the surface thereof is moved along and the skin is drawn over to form a tube. The still heated tube,
comparatively thick-shelledand relatively ICO short, is transferred to a step-by-step rolling machine, by which the tube is rolled down step by step, and at certain intervals during the rolling operation or by means of a separate rolling mechanism the diameter of the tube is successively diminished, and the thickness'of the shell-sections are successively re duced in thickness, leaving, however, each section of substantially uniform thickness or with parallel sides from end to end. The reduction of diameter and the thinning of the tube-shell sections 3 and 5, one or more, is accomplished by elongating these sections, so that the shell is reduced in diameter and diminished in thickness as compared with the tube-shell section 1.
A pole or post constructed according to my invention can be made with a comparatively thin shell, which, however, is very strong and powerful, and, owing to its elasticity and the absence of seams and welds, it will withstand pressures, strains, and abnormal stresses to a degree far exceeding ordinary tubular poles -or posts.
The pole or post is preferably cylindrical, and in order to prevent its axial displacement or movement in the ground I provide the lower tube-shell section 1 with laterally-projecting wings 10 and 12, which are rigidly se-' cured to the tube-shell section 1 through the medium of the semicircular clip 13,attached to the wings 12 by rivets 14 or other suitable devices. The two wings 10 and 12 are preferably formed integral with a semicircular por-.
tion 15, adapted to accurately fit and extend partially around the tube-shell section l,while the clip 13 fits the opposite side of the tubeshell section and serves to clamp the wings and their semicircular portion 15 firmly upon the pole or post.
The wing-plates 10 and 12 are horizontally corrugated for the purpose of enabling them:
to be more securely held by the earth in which they are buried, so that vertical displacement of the wing-plates is effectually prevented, while axial movement of the pole or post is impossible.
The improved pole or post is useful for many purposes not necessary to specifically mention; but it is particularly designed by me for suspending telegraph and telephone wires, and also the wires of trolley systems.
The construction described and shown not only produces a seamless, weldless, elastic pole or tube, but also secures great strength with a reduced quantity of metal and diminished weight in a pole or post of a given size.
The pole or post is designed to be manufactured by the well-known Mannesmann process of rolling seamless tubes, and by this means tubular telegraph or other poles or posts can be practicably manufactured, and will be found superior in actual use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A telegraph, or other pole or post, consisting of a seamless tube of steel, or other metal, having its shell formed integral with sections which successively decrease in diameter and thickness of tube-shell from the base to the opposite end thereof.
2. A telegraph, or other pole or post, consisting of a rolled, seamless, elastic tube of metal, having integral shell sections successively decreasing in diameter.
3. A telegraph, or other pole consisting of a seamless, weldless, tube of metal, having its shell rolled integral with sections which successively decrease in diameter and thickness of tube-shell, each section being of uniform thickness from end to end thereof.
4(The combination with a cylindrical telegraph, or other pole, of the metallic wings or plates, connected by a semi-cylindrical portion lying against one side of the pole or post, and a clip lying against the opposite side of the pole or post and firmly secured to the wings for preventing axial displacement, or movement of the pole or post.
5. The combination with a pole or post, of corrugated wing plates formed integral with a central semi-circular portion to fit one side of the pole or post, and adapted to be buried in the ground, and a clip lying against the opposite side of the pole or post and firmly secured. to the corrugated wing plates.
