To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, RANSOM R. SPooRE, a resident of Newark, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts and Means for Attaching Wires and a Gate Thereto; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in fence-posts and means for attaching wires or rails and gates thereto, the object of the invention being to provide a fence-post with a simple and efficient surface base which can be readily adjusted.

A'further object is to provide simple and efficient means for securely fastening wires or rails to a fence-post comprising two parallel members, and to so construct the wire-fastener that it can be adjusted, and when so adjusted it will prevent any vertical movement of the strands of wire or rails.-

With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view illustrating a fence-post having the application of my improvements. Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views. Fig. 4: is a view of a modification of the wire-fastener. Fig. 5 is a view showing gate-hinge.

My improved fence-post A is made of iron or steel, bent upon itself to form two vertical parallel members a a, which are bent laterally at their lower ends to form anchors b b. The depth to which the post is to be buried in the ground will be regulated by means of an adj ustable surface base B, secured to the post at a suitable distance above the anchors b. The surface-base comprises two plates or bars 1 2, each bent in the form of a right angle. The plate-bar 1 is made at its angular portion with an 'elongated slot 3, and the bar or plate 2 is of proper thickness or width to pass through said slot. The bar or plate 1 is adapted to lie against one face and edge of the post at the desired distance from the anchors b, and

the plate 2 is adapted to lie against the other bar or plate 2 is passed through the slot 3 in the plate or bar 1, so as to form a sort of loop for the reception of the post. The device will be slipped over the post and secured in position by means of a wedge 4, which passes through the slot 3 in the bar or plate 1 and enters between the members a a of the post. It will be seen that the surface base 13, when thus constructed and attached to the post, will have four arms 0 projecting in different directions, said arms being adapted to rest on the ground or be slightly embedded therein, if desired. Should it be desired to adjust the surface base, it is simply necessary to loosen it by the removal of the wedge 4. A device 0, similar in construction to the above described, is also located near the top of the post, the plate or bar 2 being made double and provided with a pintle 5, adapted to constitute one part of the hinge of a gate. This device is slipped on over the end of the post.

To fasten a wire or rail to the post a wirefastener d is first bent upon itself and the ends passed between the members a a of the post, theloop e being made to embrace the wire or rail fto be secured to the post. The ends of the fastener will then be bent around the rear edges of the members a of the post and extended forwardly, parallel with said members a, the free ends of the fastener being then coiled about the wire f, and finally twisted together, as at g. Instead of coiling the free ends of the fastener about the wire or railf they may be twisted together without coiling them about the wire or rail f, if desired.

My improvements are very simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, and effectual in all respects in the performance of their functions.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with a fence post, of a' surface base comprising a pair of bent plates one. having aclosed slot therein and the bent part of the other extending into said slot and the inclosure formed by the plates when together adapted to receive the post therein, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination with a fence post comface and edge of the post. The angle of the prising two parallel members, of two angular plates adapted to form a loop for the reception of the post and a wedge adapted to enter between the members of the post, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination with a fence post, of two angular plates adapted to form a loop for the reception of the post, means for securing said plates in position on the post and a gate pintle on one of said plates, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination With a fence post comprising parallel members, of two angular plates, one having a slot to receive an angular portion of the other whereby to form a loop for the reception of the post, a wedge adapted to pass through said slot and enter between the .members of the post, and a gate pintleon one of said angular plates, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination with a post, of a surface base adjustably clamped to the external surface of the post, substantially as set forth.

6. The combination with a post comprising two parallel flanges, of a surface base adjustably connected with this post, and a device passed through the base and between the parallel flanges of the post to hold the base in vertical adjustment, substantially as set forth.

7. The combination with a fence post, of a surface base therefor, comprising two angular plates adapted to embrace the post, one of said plates having a closed slot for the reception of the other plate, substantially as set forth.

8. The combination with a fence post, of a surface base comprising two angular plates adapted to embrace the posts and project therefrom in different directions, one of said plates having a slot between its end at its angle and the angle of the other plate passing through said slot, thus forming a loop that will slip down from the upper end of the post to the desired position, and means for adjustably securing said plates to the post, substantially as set forth.

9. The combination with a fence post, of a surface base therefor comprising two inter locking plates adapted to embrace the post and project in different directions therefrom, and a wedge adapted to enter said post and prevent said plates from displacement, substantially as set forth.

10.- The combination with a metallic fence post comprising two parallel members, of an adjustable surface base comprising two interlocking plates adapted to embrace said post, and a wedge adapted to pass through one of said plates and enter between the members of the post, substantially as set forth.
