Be it known that I, EMILIO OABRERO Y ECHEANDIA, of Las Marias, Porto Rico, have invented a new and Improved Drier,'of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. Y
My invention relates to improvements in driers such as are adapted for drying coffee or other grain; and the object of my inven-A tion is to produce an apparatus which is particularly adapted for'dryin g coffee, but which may be used for drying other'things, to construct the apparatus in a very simple and substantial manner, to arrange it so that the material to be dried may be readily insertedv in and removed from the compartments adapted to contain the material, to arrange the heating apparatus so that all the grains will be thoroughly and vsimilarly heated, to provide a convenient means for introducing hot air into the cylinder of the drier, so that it must needs escape through the material to be dried, to provide a steam-heater adapted to be used in conjunction with the hot air,
and to provide a convenientv means of introducing and carrying away the heating agents, all to the end that the drier may work perfectly and with great rapidity.
To these ends my invention consists of certain features .of construction and combinations of the-same, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had-to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved drying apparatus. Fig. 2 is a broken end View of the drier. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sec# tion on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
The drier comprises a large cylinder l0, which may be of any necessary capacity, and this has closed ends 11, the plates of which are stiffened by the edge lianges 12, which are riveted firmly to the end plates of the cylinder. The iianges 12- run on grooved rollers 13, which thus serve to turn the cylinder, and the rollers are secured to shafts 14, which are journaled in suitable supports 15, and one of the shafts is provided with a driving-pulley 16 or equivalent means of driving it, and in Serial No. 522,159. order that the two shafts may turn together each is provided with a sprocket-wheel 17, and the wheels connect by a chainlS; but it Will of course be understood that anyf suitable driving mechanism may be used for turning the cylinder. The cylinder is provided with a series of communicating circumferential compartments 19, which are adapted to ycontain the material to be dried, and these compartments are formed between two gauze walls 2O and 21, these Walls being of cylindrical shape, and the inner wall is supported on cross-pieces 22, which are secured to the end plates 11, while the outer wall 21 is supported on similar cross-pieces 23, which are also secured to the plates 11, and which divide the space between the walls 2O and 21 into compartments, so that too much grain shall not be held in any one place, and also to cause the grain to be held more evenly in the cylinder while the latter is revolving. The crosspieces or partitions 22 and 23 are provided with holes 24, which facilitate the circulation of heat.
The compartments 19 are filled and emptied through holes 25, (seeFig. 1,) over which moves a slide-plate 26, each slide-plate being provided with holes 27, adapted to register with the holes 25 and also with handles 29, by which it may be moved lengthwise, and each slide moves in a suitable way 28, and thus, by
moving the slide so that the holes 25 and 27 register, the compartments may be lled or emptied, while by moving the slide in the reverse direction the compartments are sealed.
On the inner side of the plates 11, and at the center thereof, are firmly secured the hubs 30, which are also attached to the perforated air-pipe 31,-which extends longitudinally through the cylinder and is at one end supplied with hot air by a pipe 32, which connects with it, this pipe being also connected with a blower 33, which drives the hot air through the pipe 32 and receives its supply from a pipe 34, connecting with a funnel 35, which has a deflector 36 at the foot, this being arranged above the boiler 37, and thus the waste heat of the boiler is utilized to provide hot air :for the drier.
The air-pipe 3l supports a framework 38, which has heads 39 fastened to the pipe, and on this framework'is a coil 4Q of steam-pipe,

which is a serpentine coil, as shown in Fig. 4, and connects at one end with a steam-supply pipe 4l, (see Fig. 3,) which projects outward through the bend of the pipe 32 and turns in a stuing-box 42, in which box it connects with a pipe 4l, which connects with the upper part of the boiler, so as to receive dry-steam. The exhaust-steam from the coil passes out through pipes 43 and 43,which return the steam to the boiler. It will thus be seen that the cylinder will be heated by the hot air blown into it through the pipe 32, and also by the direct radiation of the coil or heater 40, and as a result the coffee or other grain held in the compartments 19 is quickly dried, and the drying is very even, owing to the fact that the revolution of the cylinder tumbles the grains and moves them all into contact with the heat.
I have shown the heater arranged to turn with the cylinder; but it will be understood that the heater-that is, the coil 40 and its support-may be stationary within the cylinder with substantially the same effect and Without changing the principle of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A drier, comprising a revoluble cylinder having closed ends, a series of communicating circumferential compartments with perforated inner and outer walls, and a heater arranged within the cylinder, substantially as described.
2. A drier, comprising a revoluble cylinder having closed ends, a seriesl of communicating circumferential compartments with perforated inner and outer walls, openings for the admission and discharge ot' the material arranged in the outerwall of each compartment, a longitudinally sliding door for each compartment provided with openings adapted to register withthe openings in the outer wall'of the cylinder, and a steam coil arranged within the cylinder, substantially as described.
3. The combination with the .cylinderhaving a series of communicating circumferential drying compartments with perforated inner and outer Walls and a central chamber for the heating apparatus, of thel perforated air pipe extending through the central chamber, means for supplying hot air to the pipe, the frame Work supported on the hot air pipe, the steam coil on the frame W0rk,a steam supply pipe connecting one end of the coil with a boiler, and a return pipe leading from the other end of the coil to the boiler, substantially as described.
4. The combination with the revoluble drying cylinder having a central chamber for the heating apparatus, of the perforated hot air pipe extending through the central chamber, the boiler, the deflector and funnel arranged above the boiler, and a blower connected with the said funnel and with tho perforated hot air pipe and arranged to eX- haust the hot air from the funnel and discharge it into the perforated pipe, substantially as described.
5. The combination with the drying cylinder having a central chamber for the heating apparatus, of a perforated hot air pipe extending centrally through the said chamber, a boiler, a deflector and funnel arranged above the boiler, a blower arranged to exhaust the hot air from the funnel and discharge it into the perforated hot air pipe, and a steam coil encircling the hot air pipe and connected at one end with a steam supply pipe leading from the boiler and at the other end with a return pipe leading to the boiler, substantially as described.
