The catch is best formed by offsetting the slot at the lower end of the latch-bar; but in some instances, if preferred, it might be a notch or lug and the outer edges of the latchbar to engage suitable lugs or notches on the socket for retaining the saw elevated, as indicated by dotted lines at 071 Fig. 7.
In connection with the catches I arrange stops, which can be adjusted to any position for stopping the downward movement of the saw. K K indicates these stop-studs, arranged upon the boss or plates I, preferably with a screw-threaded shank passing through the slot J in the plate and provided with a thumbnut on the outer side thereof, (see Fig. 8,) said stop-studs being adjustable up and down the slot above the end or shoulder of the saw-guide socket D and to be fixed at any desired position of adjustment for stopping the downward movement of the saw-guides and saw at a given distance above the bed to facilitate sawing tenons or work in which it is desired thatthe saw-kerf should not pass completely through the stock. These stops K can be fixed at the upper ends of the slots when the saw is to completely out 06 the stock. These adjusting-stops can be arranged in the slots of the catch-bars, or a separate slide-bar can be attached to the guide-post for carrying the studs K. The preferable method is that shown.
The thumb-latch or lever F for engaging the notched circle and holding the swingframe D with its saw-guides at the regular miter angles-square, hexagon, octagon, &c. is, in accordance with my invention, provided with an upwardly-extending arm F, located in front of the saw-guide at one side of the slot and adjacent to the side of the saw S, which latter I provide,at or near its handle S, with a shoulder, lug, or stud t, that is adapted to engage or make contact with said arm F for operating the latch F to release the swing-bar D when the saw is run forward or at extreme advanced position. Thereby the operator can, while holding the saw, by tilting the saw, unlatch and adjust the swing-frame without releasing the Work in his other hand. This permits the convenient shifting of the angle from right to left while holding the piece of molding or stock on the bed.
For adjusting the position of the saw-guiding posts as the saw is worn narrower by filing I arrange a screw it at the bottom of the socket, the body of said screw being threaded into the bar D parallel with the axis of the socket, and its flange or head 41' extends beneath the socket-opening, so that the foot of the saw-guide E strikes thereon when in depressed position. (See Fig. 6.) Adjustment is effected by turning the screw in or out, as required.
P P indicate auxiliary guides, each com prising a slotted plate with a dependent end that can be adjusted over the bed for supporting the work away from the back B when more acute angles are desired than the radial adjustment of the swing-bar affords. The guide P is mounted on a bracket or support R at the top and rear of the back plate B and is held at adjusted position by a thumbscrew Q. For use the guides can be set over the bed, as shown at the left in Fig. 2, and when not in use turned back out of the way, as shown at the right on Fig. 2.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a miter-box mechanism, the combina tion, with the bed-frame having the larger and smaller concentric circular arcs, and the swing-bar carrying saw-guides and pivotally connected with said frame; of the grooved gib or rest its ends respectively supported upon said circular arcs, its under groove embracing the top of an upwardly projecting fin fixed on said swing-bar, the lever-block beneath said bar, clamp-bolts connecting said lock and grooved gib, and the hand-screw for depressing said lever-block and binding the parts upon said arcs, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a miter-box mechanism, the combination, of the bed-frame having its circular are provided with a graduated face-plate thereon, the swing-bar pivoted to said frame and carrying the saw-guides, the grooved gib mounted upon an upwardly projecting portion of said swing-bar, radial to said are, the index point on the end of said gib, and means substantially as described for clamping said gib and swing-bar upon the are for retaining their adjustment at any position, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the vertically movable saw'guides, and their supporting sockets, of catch-bars or plates pivotally connected with the heads of said saw-guides, and engaging lugs and notches, respectively disposed on said catch-bars and sockets, that engage for sustaining said saw-guides elevated, said catch-bars adapted to swing said lugs and notches into engagement, automatically, when the saw is lifted from the work and said saw-guides raised to high position, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with the vertically movable saw-guides and their supporting sockets, of the angle-lever catch-bars pivoted to the saw-guides and having notches or lugs at their lower ends, the-studs for engaging therewith fixed on the sockets, and the liftin g-bar pivotally connected with the inwardly upon said catch-bars for contact with the shoulder of the sockets, for the purpose set forth.
6. The combination with the bed-frame, its
notched circular arc, and the swing-frame carrying the saw-guides, of the thumb-latch pivoted within the swing-frame, its rear end engaging with the notch in said circular arc; said thumb-latch having its forward arm extended upward in front of the saw-guidesocket adjacent to the side of the saw, and a saw having a projecting stud at its handled end adapted for contact with said thumblatch, for the purpose set forth.
