FOUNTAIN SHAVlNG-BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 543,969, dated August 6, 1895.
Application tiled June 13,1894- Serial No. 514.455. (No model.)
To all whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER V. SANTEE, a citizen ot` the United States, residing at Watertown, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented a new and use- -ful Fountain Shaving-Brush, of which the folrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fountain shaving-brush constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line w of Fig. 2.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a tubular brush-handle forming a reservoir for a shaving cream or other lather preparation, and said tubular-handle is provided at its lower end with the brush-receiving socket 2, into which is adapted to be fitted the brush-head 3 of the brush 4, comprising -the usual bunch of bristles or hairs, and projected outwardly from the socket end of the tubular handle and into the brush 4 is a feedtube 5 that provides means for carrying the preparation from the reservoir-handle into the brush to keep the same supplied with the requisite quantity of preparation for shaving purposes.
The tubular reservoir-handle 1 is provided therein at one end thereof with the integral transverse cylindrical valve chamber o r casing 6 provided at one side with the valve-opening 7 that communicates with the interior ot' the handle, and said valve-opening is located directly opposite the inner end of the tube that opens into the chamber or casing 6, so that when the said inner end of such tube is uncovered there is a free passage for the preparation from the handle through the valveopening and into the feed-tube 5. The cylindrical valve chamber or casing 6 accommodates, for movement therein, the cylindrical valve-plug 8 that is normally held to a position covering the valve-'opening 7 and the iuner end of the tube 5 by means of the valveadjusting spring 9 located within the chamber or casing 6 and having one end fitting in the spring-socket 10 formed in one side of the said valve-plug. The said valve-plug has projected from the side opposite the socket 10 the valvestem 11, which works through a central guideopening 12 inl the removable screw-plug 13,
.removably fitted Within the interiorly-threaded open end 14 of the` valve chamber or casing 6. The said valve-stem 11 projects through the guide-opening of the plug 13 and beyond one side of. the handle in order to provide a projecting push portion for the thumb or linger ofa hand, whereby the valve-plug may be moved at one side of the aligned feed-tube and valve-opening 7, so that the shaving preparation will pass from the handleinto the feedtube and into the brush, and by removing the thumb or finger from the outer end of the valve-stern the spring 9 moves the valve-plug to a position to cover the said valve-opening, and the movement of the valve in this direction is limited by the stop-liange 15, formed on the valve-stem 11 and adapted to work against the inner side of the plug 13.
At this point attention is directed to the fact that by reason of locating the spring 9 between the closed end of the chamber 6 and the valve-plug 8 the spring will b'e completely housed inaposition in which it is entirely protected from the liquid carried by the brush, and during the operation ot' the valve the liquid never enters that portion of the chamber 6 in which the spring 9 is arranged. In connection with thc said spring it will also be noted that the removable screwplug 13 provides means for adjusting the tension of the spring should thesame become very weak. The outer side of the screw-plug 13 is provided with the usual screwdriver-groove, and .when
it isnecessary to either remove or adjust the said plug 13 the point of the screwdriver is pressed against the outer projecting end ot the stem 11, so as to push said stem inward out of the Way and allow the said point of the ICO.
screwdriver to enter the groove of the screwplug, whereby the latter can he readily turned.
The shaving cream or preparation that is placed in the tubular reservoir-handle is kept under a feedingpressure by means of the adjustable piston or plunger 16. The piston or plunger 1G tits snugly within the handle, and is adapted to work therein from end to end, and said piston or plunger is provided with a central screw-opening 17, through which passes the adjusting-screw 1S, loosely mounted at one end, as at 19, in the screw-cap 20 and upon the outer extremity of said adjusting-screw is fitted the milled thumb-piece 21, which provides for conveniently manipulating the screw to adjust the position of the piston or plunger 16. The screwcap 20 detachably engages the exteriorly-threaded open end 22 ofthe handle 1.
In use, the piston or plunger 1G is adjusted to confine the shaving cream or preparation under a pressure, and by then adjusting the valve to uncover the aligned opening 7 and feedtubc 5 such cream or preparation will run into the brush, after which, by allowing the valve to close, the supply will be cut ofi? from the brush.
Changes in the form1 proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this in- Vention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
ln a fountain shaving brush, the combination of a tubular reservoir handle provided at one end with a feed tube and with a transverse cylindrical valve chamber opening into the feed tube and provided with a valve opening arranged in a line with the feed tube and communicating with the interior of the handle, said valve chamber being closed at one end and provided with an opposite interiorly threaded open end, a centrally perforated screw plug removably and adjustably fitted in the interiorly threaded openlend of the valve chamber and provided with a screw drivergroove in its outer side, a valve plug mounted to slide Within the valve casing and provided at one side with a socket and at the opposite side with an integral stem normally project ing through and beyond the perforation of' the screw plug and having a stop flange spaced from the valve plug and adapted to Vwork against the inner side of the screw plug,
and a spring arranged in the Valve chamber between the closed end thereof and the socketed side of the valve plug so as to be coinpletely housed and kept from contact with the liquid within the brush, the tension of said spring being regulated by the adjustment of the screw plug with a screw driver or similar tool, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signatn re in the presence of two witnesses.
