GASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters 'Patent No. 542,431, dated July 9, 1895.
Application filed March 19, 1895- Serial No. 542.307- (N model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, .TUsTUs VALLAT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gaskets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has especial reference to gaskets for the manholes and hand-holes of steam-boilers; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully setforth hereinafter and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of aportion of a boiler having a hand-hole therein closed by a plate, said boiler and plate being provided with my improved gaskets. Fig. 2 is an end View of the closing-plate in place in the hand-hole, the portion of the boiler shown being in section as well as its gasket and the adjacent portions of the plate-gasket being also shown in section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inner View of said portion of the boiler With the closing-plate removed, the gasket being partially broken away to better illustrate details of construction.
The object of my present invention is the production of a steam-tight gasket for the described manholesvand hand-holes and one that is practically indestructible, thereby obviating the necessity of frequent restoration of'the gaskets, which is not only a matter of considerable expense, but the cause of much inconvenience and loss of time.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a portion of a boiler provided with a hand-hole a. Around this hole on the inner side of the boiler is first placed a flat ring or gasket B, formed of a thin piece of usudurian, whose .opening corresponds exactly to that of the said hand-hole. Next to this is placed the metallic portion of my gasket, comprising a flat ring or open disk 0 of copper, having a flange 0 turned in from the edge of said opening, forming in efiect a thimble, which is slipped into the opening in the boiler and lies snugly against the wall thereof and projects beyond the same. The flange c is slitted at frequent intervals, and the projecting slitted portions d d of the flange are. turned down on the outer side of the boiler all around the hand-hole, thereby confining the usudusurrounding the part D of the plate, and Gis a thin fiat gasket of copper of the same shape as the gasket F, placed on top of it, so that when the parts are put together in closing the hole a the smooth flat copper surfaces of the parts 0 and G will be in contact. The closing-plate is shown provided with a screwthreaded rod 6, clamp f, and tightening-nut 9, all of ordinary construction. The heat of the steam within the boiler will cause the usudurian gaskets to closely adhere to the adjacent-surfaces of the iron of the boiler and plate and the copper of the outer gaskets, so that the copper gaskets become permanently united to the said boiler and plate.
With closingplates of other forms some of the described details of construction would obviously be somewhat varied, but in all instances my gaskets consist of thin flat open disks or rings of copper permanently united to the metal of the boiler andclosing-plates by interposed fiat open disks or rings of usudurian.
The usudurian is a composition of various substances, including graphite, and is fireproof and steam-proof, and is flexible and soft when applied; but the heat of the steam hardens and unites it to the metal surfaces, so that a permanent union is effected, and the greater the heat and steam-pressure to which it is subjected the stronger and firmer it becomes, being in this respect the exact 0pposite of india-rubber, and, unlike that, never crumbling or disintegrating.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A gasket for man-holes and hand-holes of 5 steam-boilers, consisting of a flat open disk or ring of copper permanently united to the metal of the boiler or closing plate by an interposed fiat open disk or ring of usudurian.
