CONVEYER FOR TAMPING MATERIALS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,151, dated July 2, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it k nown that we, ROBERT H. ELLIOTT and J OHN B. CARRINGTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Conveyers forTamping Material; and we do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in appliances for inserting tamping material in drill-holes, and consists of certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the device ready for inserting in the drill-hole. Fig. 2 represents an end view as seen from the left of Fig. l and on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation showing one of the sliding parts of the tamping appliance drawn partly backward.
The appliance consists of two interlocking semicylinders A and B, connected together by the hooks (b and 5, formed from the turnedover edges of the said semicylinders, as shown in Fig. 2, and the said two parts are free to slide longitudinally relative to each other, yet
when hooked together, as shown, constitute a complete tube or cylinder adapted to contain the tamping material.
Each of the sliding pieces A and B is provided with a handle 0.
The operation of the device is as follows: The two semicylinders are interlocked, as shown in Fig. 1, by sliding the one within the other. The end of the completed tube is stopped up with a wad of paper, cotton waste, or other suitable material. The tube is filled with the tamping material. A second Wad is inserted 5 in the opposite end of the tube, if desired, and
then the tube is inserted in the drill-hole to the required depth. Once in the hole at the proper depth the upper half of the tube is slid out, leaving the tamping material resting in thelowerhalf of the tube and partly overflowing the edges thereof. Then the bottom piece is twisted around through one hundred and eighty degrees by means of its handle, and it can be readily pulled out without dragging out with it any appreciable amount of tamping material. In this way the tamping material may be placed at any desired portion of the drill-hole. It may then be rammed with the ordinary rainmer or the hole maybe closed in the ordinary way.
IVe do not mean to limit ourselves to any particular form of longitudinally divided tube, nor is it necessary to make the two parts each semicylinders or of equal size, although this construction is preferred.
The various advantages of the herein-described appliance will be readily understood by any one skilled in the art.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A conveyer for tamping material, consisting essentially of two superimposed hollow semicylinders the one being adapted to slide longitudinally relatively to the other with guides for holding the two semicylinders together, and means for separately holding and moving the semi-cylinders substantially as and. for the purposes described.
2. A conveyer for tamping material, consisting of two superimposed hollow semicylinders having their longitudinal edges bent so as to hook together, and yet leaving the two parts free to slide longitudinally, with a handle attached to the inner end of. each of said semi-cylinders, substantially as and for the purposes described.
