W'ILLIAM HICKEY, OF BROQKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS.
WlNDOW-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,053, dated July 2, 1895. Application filed May 14.. 1896. fierial No. 549,234. on model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HIoKEY, of Brookline, in the county ofMiddlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and'useful Improvement in WVindow-Fasteners, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to window-fasteners; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the accompanying drawings and to the claims hereto appended, and in which my invention is clearly pointed out.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a front elevation of a small portion of the upper and lower sashes of a windowwith a portion of the stop bead out in section with my improved win- (low-fastener applied thereto; and Fig": 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, the main cutting plane being on line m w on Fig. 1 and a portion of the meeting-rail of the lower sash, a portion of thefastener-stand, and the stile ofthe upper sash being cut on lineyy on Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A isthe jamb of the'window-frame. B is the outer casing; O, the meeting-rail of the upper sash; D, the meeting-rail of the lower sash; E, the stile of the upper sash; F, the stile of the lower sash; G, the stop-bead, and a and a the glass of the upper and lower sashes, respectively.
The meeting-rail D of the lower sash has secured thereto by suitable screws the angular stand I), having formed upon the rear end of its horizontal arm two ears I) and at the lower end of its pendent arm the two ears 19 The ears I) have pivoted thereto the arm 0 having mounted in a bearing in its upper end the locking-bolt cl, which has formed on its rear end the radially-projecting lug d and has secured to its front end the operatingdental displacement and secure the sashes against being opened without the application of sufficient force to breakthe sash or fastening or cutting or breaking the glass and operating the fastening through the opening.
The cars 19 on the pendent arm of the stand I) have pivoted thereto the arm f, similar in construction to the arm 0, and carrying at its free end a locking-bolt g of the same construc tion as the locking-bolt d.
The armfis arranged to move about its pivot in a plane at right angles tothe plane of movement of the arm a, and the bolt g is arranged to enter keyholes h in the metal plate I, set in and secured to the stop-bead G, in the same manner as the bolt 11 engages with the plate H. g
The arms 0 andfare so clamped by their pivot-pins as to create sufficient friction to hold said arms in the positions to which they aremoved when disengaged from the plates H and I.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
If it is desired to lock the window with both sashes closed, the locking-bolt d isiinserted through the plate H and then turned about its axis, so that it cannot be withdrawn without being rotated in one or the other direction till the lug d thereon coincides with the notch in the perimeter ot'the hole e, and the bolt g may or may not be engaged with the plate I, as may be desired. If it is desired to lock the window with the upper sash open at the top and the lower sash closed, the boltgis engaged with the plate I in the lowermost keyhole, as shown in the drawings, and the bolt cl is engaged with the plate- H in one of the keyholes h above the lowermost one in said plate. If it is desired to lock the window with the upper sash lowered and the lower lower sash; an arm pivoted to said plate and movable about said pivot in a Vertical plane; a locking bolt provided with a radially projecting lug at one end and a thumb pad at its other and revolubly mounted in a bearing in the free end of said arm; and a metal plate set in or secured to the upper sash and provided with a plurality of key holes to receive said bolt.
2. The combination in a window fastener of an angular or elbow like stand secured to the meeting rail of the lower sash; a pair of arms pivoted to said stands and movable about said pivots in vertical planes at right angles to each other; a locking bolt revolubly mounted in a bearing in the free end of each of said arms with its axis transversely of said arm and provided on its locking end with a radially projecting lug; and a pair of metal plates each provided with a plurality of key- 20 In testimony whereof I have signed my 25 name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 11th day of May, A. D. 1895.
