SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,03 3, dated July 2, 1 895.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS EDGAR ADAMS, a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin-Electric Locomotives; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvementin electric locomotives, and more particularly to the manner of mounting the electric motor, the object of the invention being to produce simple and efficient means for flexibly supporting the motor on the axles of the car independently of the truck-frame.
A further object 'is to so mount the motor that the vibration transmitted to the car will be reduced to a minimum.
A further object is to so construct a motor mounting and gearing that the weight of the 7 motor will come upon the gear-casin gs, whereby great durability of the axles and journals is had.
A further object is to so construct the mounting as to effect equal freedom of the motor from cramping strain and equal freedom from the dead-weight hammer-blow on the track.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the combination, with car axles, of motors geared therewith and supported by the axles independently of the truck-frame.
The invention alsoconsists in the combination, with car-axles and motors geared therewith, of gear-casings mounted on the axles and connected with the motors, said motors being supported by the gear-casings independently of the truck-frame.
The invention also consists in the oombination, with the car axles, of motor-casin gs, flexible connections between said motor-casings and the axles, a bar resting on said casings, and flexible connections between said bar and casings. g
The invention also consists in the combination, with car-axles, of motor-casings, flexible connections between said casings and axles, a bar having a slidingconnection with said casings, and flexible connections between said casings and bar at points between the bear fiat upon the bar f,

Below the truck-frame Aau electric motor 0 is disposed, the casing c of said motor-casing being made in twoparts normally secured together by means of suitable fastening de vices.
Each motor-casing is provided at one side with lugs or arms 0, each having a perforation for the passage of a rod 0', having a bearing immediately over the axle on integral sleeve 0 projecting from the gear-casings,and each rod 0 is provided with a head e screwed thereon, between which head and arm 0 a spring 6 is inserted, and the heads 6 are held in place by means of nuts e and split keys 6 On the rods 0', between the lugs or ears c-and the sleeves c of the gear-casings, springs c are placed.
A perforated arm 01 projects from the oppo-, site or inner side of each motor-casing at the center of gravity thereof for a purpose pres ently explained. Lugs 6 project from the outer edge or side of each motor-casing centrally between the ends thereof, and between these lugs rollers e are mounted, on which rollers a bar f is placed, said bar being of a length sufficient to extend over the rollers of both motor-casings. In line with the perforations in the arms at of the respective motor-casings the bar f is perforated for the reception of tions of the arms 01 and at their upper ends are made with heads f At their lower ends the rods f are provided with washers d, held in place by means of nutsd and split keys 61 Between each arm 01 and the barfa spring g is located, and between the arms 01 and washers d springs g are located. The heads f on the rods f are made large and normally so that when a curve in the road is being traveled and the front of rods f, which also pass through the perforathe motor swings out of line the large heads on the rods f will be tipped and have the effect of bringing the motor back into line quickly. The bar f is maintained in proper position by means of headed pins h, secured to the motor-casings and projecting through elongated slots h in said bar, with springs it between the bar and pin-heads. Extensions 7L project from the arms 01 of the respective motor-casings into stirrups 71 secured to the barf. With this construction and arrangement, if any of the supporting parts should break, the motor would be sustained by these stirrups and in this manner operated until it can be repaired.
The respective ends of the motor casings are made with openings 1', one half of each opening being made in the respective parts of said casing. In these openings hollow trunnions a" project, each hollow trunnion being made integral with the respective gear-casing D D, or, if desired, said trunnions maybe made separate and bolted or riveted thereto. Each gear-casing is made in two parts normally secured together by means of suitable fastening devices. One end of each gear-casingis pivotally connected with the motor-casing by the trunnions i, and the other end isprovided with the sleeves c journaled on the axles B. The armature-shaftjof the motor projects at both ends through the hollow trunnions v." and have hearings in removable linings 11 therein, the extremities of said shaft also having bearings in removablelinings i located in hollow bosses i formed on the casings 0.
Within each gear-casing D a pinion E is secured to the armature-shaftj and adapted to mesh with gear-wheels E, keyed to the axles, said gearing being adapted to retain the gear-casings in proper position. The pinion E on one end of each armature-shaftj is preferably arranged so as to engage the teeth of the corresponding gear-wheel E slightly in advance of the engagement of the pinion at the other end of the armature-shaft with the corresponding gear-wheel to secure the smoothest running of the gears.
The lower part of each motor-casing is made with double walls to produce chambers k, which constitute receptaclesfor lubricant which may escape from the armature-bearings. Openings Z Z are provided, whereby the accumulated lubricant can be removed when desired.
By mounting the motors independently of the truck-frame, as above described, vibration to the car-body will be reduced to a minimum. By causing the gear-casings to carry the weight of the motors great durability of journals and axles is had. Equal'freedom of motors from cramping strains and equal freedom from the dead-weight hammer-blow on the track is obtained by the manner of supporting the parts as above described.
The car-axles thrown askew by curves or obstructions come quickly to their correct positions as the motors seek the lowest point for their center of gravity, which is approximately in line with the center of support.
My improvements are simple in construction and effectual in all respects in the performance of their functions. v
Slight changes might be made in the de tails of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an electric locomotive, the combina tion with two axles and motors geared with said axles, of a single bar located centrally between the ends of said motors and extending over both motors, said bar bearing at its ends on said motors and connected at points between its ends with the respective motors, and connections between said motors and axles substantially as set forth. I
2. The combination with car axles, motors geared therewith and casings for said motors, of gear casings mounted on the axles and having movable connections with the motor casings, said motors being supported by the gear casings independently of the truck frame, and abar connected with both motors substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with car axles, of motor casings, flexible connections between said motor casings and axles, a bar having a sliding connection with said casings and flexible connections between said casings and bar at points between the ends of the latter, substantially as as set forth.
4:. The combination with an axle, and a motor casing, of gear casings journaled on the axle and connected with said motor casing, a bar, a flexible connection at one side of themotor casing with said bar and flexible connections at the other side of the motor casing with said gear casings, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with a car axle and a motor geared therewith, of gear casings having sleeves journaled on the axle, a bar, flexible connections between said bar and motor at one side of the latter and flexible connections between the other side of the motor and the sleeves on the gear casings, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination with a car axle, of an electric motor geared at both ends with said axle, two gear casings pivotally connected at one endto the casing of said motor and having sleeves at their other ends journaled on the axle, lugs projecting from the casing of the motor, springs between said lugs and the sleeves on the gear casings, a bar over the motor and a flexible connection between said bar and the casing of the motor, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination with two car axles, and
a motor geared with each axle, of gear casings journaled at one end on the axles and pivotally connected at their other ends with the casings of the motors, flexible supports over the axles for said motors, a bar extending over both motors and adapted to have a sliding movement thereon, and flexible connections between said bar and the motor casings, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination with two car axles and a motorgeared with each axle, of gear casings having sleeves journaled on the axles, a bar extending over both motor casings and adapt-. edto move thereon, lugs projecting from each motor casing, rods secured to the sleeves of the gear casings and passing through said lugs, heads on said rods, springs on said rods between said lugs and sleeves and between said lugs and heads on therods, and a flexible connection between each motor casin g and said bar, substantially as set forth.
0. The combination with two car axles and a motor geared with each axle, a flexible con nection between the outer side of each motor and the car axles, a movable bar extending over said motors, and flexible connections between the inner sides of said motors and said bar, substantially as set forth.
1-0. The combination with two car axles, of a motor geared with each axle and having a flexible support over the same, rollers carried by the casings of said motors, a bar extending over both motors and adapted to move on said rollers, and flexible connections between said bar and the motors, substantially as set forth.
11. The combination with two car axles, of a motor geared with each axle and having a flexible support over the same, of a bar extendingover both motors and adapted to have a movement thereon, lugs projecting from the inner sides of the casings of said motors, pins or rods passing through said lugs and perforations in the bar, and springs between said lugs and bar, substantially as set forth.
12. The combination with a car axle, of a motor geared therewith and having a flexible support over the same, a bar having a movable connection with the top of the casing of said motor, a lug projecting from the inner side of said motor casing, a pin or rod passing through said lug and a perforation in said bar, a spring between said bar and the lug on the motor casing, and a spring on said pin orrod between said lug and a washer supported by a nut or head on the lower end of said rod, substantially as set forth.
13. The combination with two car axles, of a motor geared with each axle and having a flexible support over the same, a bar having a movable connection with said motors over the same, and means for sustaining the 'mo' tors in case of the breakage of any of said connections, substantially as set forth.
14. The combination with two axles, of a motor geared with each axle and having a flexible support over the same, a bar having a movable connection with said motors over the same, flexible connections between said bar and motors, stirrups secured to said bar, and arms projecting from the casings of said motors into said stirrups, substantially as set forth.
15. The combination with two car axles and a motor geared with each axle and having flexible supports over the same, of a movable bar extending over both motors and having elongated slots, headed pins secured to the casings of said motors and passing through said elongated slots, and flexible connections between said bar and motors, substantially as set-forth.
16. The combination with two car axles and a motor geared with each axle and having a flexible support over the same, of a movable bar extending over both motors and having elongated'slots, headed pins secured to the casings of the motor and passing through said elongated slots, springs between the heads of 7 said pins and the bar and flexible connections bet-ween said bar and the motor, substantially asset forth.
17. In an electric locomotive, the combination with the axle and a motor geared therewith, of a movable bar on said motor, a per foratedlug projecting from the motorcasing, a rod passing through said lug and bar, a washer on the lower end of said rod, a spring on said rod between the lug and washer, and a large head on the rod adapted to bear on the top of said bar, substantially as set forth. 18. The combination with two car axles and a motor geared with each axle, of gear casings having sleeves journaled on the axles, a bar extending over both motor casings and adapted to move thereon, lugs projecting from each motor casing, rods secured to the sleeves of the gear casings and passing through said lugs, said rods having screw threaded upper ends, washers on said rods, nuts and keys for retaining said washers in' place, springs be-' tween the washers and lugs, springs between the lugs and sleeves and a flexible connection between each motor casing and said bar, substantially as set forth.
